Abstract

Discourse markers (DMs) play a crucial role in writing as ‘linking words’, ‘linking phrases’, or ‘sentence connectors’ that bind ideas between sentences in a paragraph  or between paragraphs to  build  coherence  in a text.  DMs should be sufficiently but not overly used in writing. As EFL learners find it difficult to identify the types, functions, and positions of DMs to link ideas in their academic writing, this article attempts to share an instrument in the form of DMs checklist to help learners enhance their knowledge of DMs. The checklist can also be used as teacher/peer feedback form in the writing process.

Abstract

Postmodern fiction has unique features that distinguish its works from other works of fiction. It often blurs literary genres and break conventional narration. Tony Morrison’s novel titled Sula, a work that has triggered some critical work, is consid- ered as one of prime texts of this fiction. This article is a report on an investigation of the postmodern features of Morison’s Sula. It is a descriptive qualitative method using the narration and conversation among the characters. It showed that the novel starts with the paradox and ambiguity in the beginning. The author is able to judge the eth- ical or moral ramifications and decipher Sula in either an evil or a good person. It also criticizes patriarchy institution, gender displacement, and associative ambiguity

The data were then categorized into taxonomies by using distributional and identity method. The result of the research shows that: (1) the structures of English proverbs are varied in forms, from the simple to complex, (2) the inter-constituent relations are not rigid, (3) some unique lexical formulas construct the proverbial structures, and (4) lexicons that construct English proverbs have their own semantic distinctive functions

Abstract

The old Javanese language (OJL) is a language with rich morphemes that form words. This implicates the syntactic process in the language. One example of a syntactic alternation is a causative. Causative is a valence-raising mechanism in the structure of a clause. This study aims to describe the formal causative in OJL. Causative in OJL is morphologically marked on the verb. Causative verbs can be formed from non-causative ones, such as adjectives and basic verbs. In OJL there are three types of causative: morphological, lexical and analytic causative. Morphological causative is formed by affixes like mang- / ng+-i , paha-+-in-, -um-+-akên (a), infix - um-, and -in- / -an, -in- ( in the passive voice). Lexical causative is the basic form which has a causative meaning. Analytic causative is formed by adding a verb form gawe, matangyan, and hetu. Intransitive verb clause is diathesis patientive. The transitive verb clause has two macro roles, namely actor and undergoer. When the two macro situations are merged into a single macro situation, the particles are connected by conjunctions: sawet, matangyan, apan, and karana

Abstract

Unlike English that divides its conditional sentences into open and hypothetical types, there is no division of conditional sentence types in Indonesian. Hence, translating conditional sentences from Indonesian to English is challenging. The purpose of this study was to determine the equivalence of meaning and structure of the conditional sentences in the source language (Indonesian) and the target language (English) in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novel, Gadis Pantai, and its English translation. As this novel is a literary work, the complexity of the structure of the conditional sentence in this novel is very interesting to study. The method used in this study is comparative descriptive which was employed to provide clear pictures of the discussed issues. The findings of the study show that in translating the conditional sentence from Bahasa Indonesia into English in the novels, the translator has made some adjustments both in the sentence structure and meaning due to thesignificant differences of the social-cultural aspect between the source and the target language
