Abstract

Buton is one of Malay Kingdoms which lies in South East Sulawesi. As the time goes by, more and more people from Malay came to Buton. This was due to the strategic position of Buton as trade route in East Nusantara. Besides, this was encouraged by their intention to spread Islam. As a part of Malay Kingdom, the use of Malay language was indispensible. The script collection of ancient texts of Buton Kingdom (Abdul Mulku Zahari’s collection) indicates that Malay Language was taken as one the official languages used in the Kingdom beside Arabic and Wolio languages. From the collection it was found out that Malay (language) scripts were older than Arabic and Wolio scripts (according to its colophon). This language is also used to write scripts about religious teachings, official letters of the Kingdom, adat laws, history, genealogy, literature, traditional medicines, language teachings, and primbon.

Abstract

Poetry can help students become more sensitive to language. However, in an EFL situation students may object to learning poetry. Thus, English teacher should know how to use poetry in their teaching. The teacher should also let the EFLlearners not feel worry about understanding poetry because not all poems are difficult. Moreover, what matter most is learning English through poem and not to learn about the poem itself. In short, it is suggested for EFL English teachers to have the learners explore some poems and write ones. Poetry gives abundant languageexposures that improve students’ language sensitivity and students’ creativity in using their English.

Abstract

In his novels, Dickens delivers important social messages through his empathetic characters living lives of misery, oppression, slavery, degradation, and exploitation under the so-called capitalistic system. These underclass people hollertheir plight of injustice and crises of the actual social milieu. In the Marxist perspective, these multiple crises are embedded in themes of exploitation, class consciousness, and sacrifice and revolution. Hence, the realism disguised under literary devices could hopefully accomplish dual purposes, both as a means of provoking a new kind of "social consciousness" among the bourgeoisie and as ameans of raising the proletariats class consciousness

Abstract

This article is intended to understand the phenomena of women writers in Indonesian literature within the period of year 2000. Their works of literature emerge among the works of art dominated by male writers. Seeing through thefeminism point of view, those women writers strive their position by attempting to deconstruct the patriarch system. By producing their works, they seek their identity through the literary writing and literary critics. Their existence in Indonesian literaryworks in 2000s becomes the pioneer of women’s rebelious action against the patriarch system in Indonesian literary history. Through their works which have got some awards from Dewan Kesenian Jakarta or Khatulistiwa Awards, theircapability in writing is recognized. However, their skill in producing works of art does not necessarily get positive respond from both the society and the literary critics. There are many prickly critics which try to marginalize their works.
