Abstract

In today’s world, Islamic education is facing an alarming dilemma. On one hand, there is a need to modernize the concept and practice of Islamic education. On the other hand, it cannot halt its pace for global competition is a never ending process. Its current challenge is to continuously improve its quality in many fields one of which is to respond to global development. One nation’s incapability to respond to global changes could lead to ideological crisis  endangering the identity of its citizens. Tauhid-oriented education is considered to excel in dealing with global phenomena and to produce socially pious individuals. In addition, it is mandatory for a state as an education system to develop its citizens’ characters reserving the nation’s spirit. The four pillars discussed in the article are considered one alternative door to Indonesia’s revitalization that focuses on human resource development, both on being a good citizen and on modernizing Islamic education

Abstract

The existence of different faiths in one country, where each offers life norms, prevents the use of one religion as the sole general source for reference. Therefore, it becomes a necessity to find one general concept incorporating all those religions. This calls for a concept of civil religion. It is a view that puts religion norms as merely having substantives function. In other words, it looks for a compromise held by all faiths to keep all parties respecting each other. This is the reason this article will discuss religious practices demonstrated by NU have shown to contain substantial elements of civil religion. This then will lead to the building of public ethics as a room for dialogue acting as substitute of religions.

Abstract

Indonesian Islamic education is experiencing a never ending crisis leading to loss of its philosophical foundation and vagueness of its objectives. Consequently,  Islamic education results in a number of incompleteness in a wide range of its facets; in technology, global interconnection, and even in morality. A  multidimensional Islamic education serves as a paradigm of education that employs a multidimensional approach integrating religion, philosophy and science. Islam views knowledge as a means to save human’s soul and to reach one’s happiness here and hereafter. It is an education focusing on an integration of robbaniyah (divinity), insaniyah (humanity), and alamiyah (nature) to realise the duty of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin and to maintain the balance between rationality, morality, and spirituality.

Abstract

Problems arising from the relationship between Islam (dîn) and politics (siyâsah) became the polemics among Muslim political thinkers that have not been completely solved up until now. Hence, it is difficult to identify which countriy such as Turkey, Egypt, Sudan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Algeria, and Indonesia, that deserves to be a representation of an Islamic state. The consequence of different understandings about the relationship between Islam and politics – in the case in Indonesia- is the emergence of Indonesian Islamic State (NII). This movement attracted a number of responses from Indonesian Muslim intellectuals. Using a sociohistorical-politics approach in discussing these responses as they do not agree about the establishment of the NII, will lead to an understanding of coercion and oppression of understanding group that is different from other groups.

Abstract

Islam is the religion that maintains peace and wellbeing for all people. Islam supports and opens its widest door for everyone to seek peaceful life and closes the door of hostility amongst people. To Islam the real human is the one who guarantees one’s peace and wellbeing. The history has witnessed how Islam promotes peace like the ones demonstrated in Hudaibiyah treaty and in the opening of Mecca. The caliph Umar ibn Abdul Aziz is also known for his leadership upholding peace and welfare for the people. Among the approaches in realizing peaceful Islam are cultivating good faith, building universal brotherhood, opposing harm leading to chaos, and promoting noble actions producing peace and wellbeing.
