The Esensia: Jurnal Ilmu-Ilmu Ushuluddin is an independent academic journal focusing on the sciences of the ushululddin (principles of religion), published twice a year (April and October) by the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Thought, State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. It is a shared space to disseminate and publish the scholarly papers of those whose concern is the sciences of ushuluddin, such as, Kalam, Tasawuf, Islamic Philosophy, Tafsir, Hadith, Comparative Religion, Studies of Religion and Islamic Thoughts.

Abstract

Islam yang sejatinya murni untuk mengEsakan Tuhan, Allah Swt, telah mengalami berbagai tahap kebumian yang konsekuensinya tercampur dengan berbagai persoalan kemanusiaan. Teologi dalam hal ini yang notabene sebagai pelopor wacana ketuhanan dan menjadi salah satu terma pokok dalam diskusi keagamaan Islam juga ikut mencuat pengaruhnya. Fenomena historis mengenai perdebatan teologis yang cukup sengit dalam diskursus agama Islam diantara Mutakallimi>n dalam diskusi kali ini mendapat sorotan tajam bagi kalangan cerdik cendekia Muslim modernis karena dipandang tidak mampu lagi menampung jawaban permasalahan yang bersifat antroposentris. Alasannya konkret, teologi yang selama ini dipelajari hanya berbicara mengenai masalah langit (teosentris) dan hampir –jikalau tidak mengatakan sama sekali- tidak pernah turun ke bumi (antroposentris). Karenanya, dimunculkan wacana baru yang menggagas konsep teologi yang selain berpijak pada nilai-nilai ketuhanan, namun juga mampu diaktualisasikan ke dalam ranah kemanusiaan, yaitu Teologi Sosial. Sehingga diharapkan ia mampu menjadi solusi atas problem kemanusiaanyang marak saat ini, semisal ketidakadilan, kekeraasan, terorisme dan sebagainya, khususnya yang termasuk dalam pelanggaran hak-hak asasi kemanusiaan.

Abstract

Here I try to uncover various foundation of time and space underlying the  nature of caliph ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz’s thought who formally commanded codifying hadith. I use Peter L. Berger theory of sociology of knowledge to get an understanding of how the process ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz that has lived in the luxuriousness dynastic of Umayyah capable to pay attention on hadith whereas formerly it was allowed running wild in the arms individual thalib hadith and didn’t get attention from any Umayyad caliphate.

Abstract

This paper tries to explain the phenomena of Hadith as traditions of Muslim society. The study of the phenomenon of Hadith is also called as ”Living Hadith” defined as the religious phenomenon such as modes of conduct or responses to interpretation of Hadith texts. These traditions can be classified into three categories: oral, written, and practical one. The object of this research is the practice of Shalat al-Hifdzi located at Ponpes Tahfizh Al-Qur’an “Baitul Azhar’’ Amuntai. Using the phenomenological approach and observation-interview type of method, the research shows that the significance of both practice of Shalat al-Hifdzi particularly for  Huffadz and its exercise (Riyadhah) is to come nearer (Taqarrub) to God and to have easier process memorizing the Qur’an.

Abstract

Some contemporary scholars consider that the logical science of Kalam was patterned apologetic, and dogmatic. This kind of scientific logic makes the Science of Kalam less responsive to developments and changing times. This paper therefore  intended to assist the reader in understanding to the assessment. it can be traced through a review of philosophy of science, especially the distinction context of discovery and the context of justification a science. At Science of Kalam, the context of the invention relates to the formulation of science of Kalam based on al-Qur’an and as-Sunnah and residues historicity attached to it. This context shows this pattern of subjective knowledge that actually assessed objectively by the Muslim majority. While the context of justification Kalam can be observed in denial and rejection of the belief that different Mutakallimun using dialectic (al-manhaj al-jadalî; jadaliyyah)and strengthened by evidence demonstrative rational method (al-manhaj al- bahtsî;bahtsiyyah). There are two forms of demonstrative methods commonly used by Mutakallimun, namely analogy and syllogism. The linkage of two kinds of basically a form of scientific logic of Kalam with a pattern on top.

Abstract

This article will discuss the verses of the Quran, specifically appeared in the Republika Newspaper Rubric of “Hikmah”. The  articles include only eight randomly selected ones in March 2014. The analysis deals with what kind of values discussed in the media related to al-Quran. The results showed that though there were attempts to inform the teachings or the values contained in the religion through the media, but it is still within a narrow range. The analysis shows that indeed the content of “Hikmah” rubric is more oriented on the religious motivations than philosophical one.

Abstract

Ethnocentric concepts, theories and practices in education, predominantly embedded in western philosophy and values, tend to ignore the growing multicultural nature of educational institutions. In contrast, Islamic education and learning is an important aspect to develop of quality human capital and human resources development. Malaysia as a country in Southeast Asia that is developing as one of the strategic determinant in the economic, social, cultural international politics and applying the "Asian Cultural Strategy Based on Islam”. However, in recent years, the study found that the moral values of young people today is significantly reduced, allowing the question to what extent education or tarbiyah aspect emphasized in learning today. Through an examination of the higher education sistems, the authors explore the problems and effectiveness of the education sistem that are practiced in the country to examine the appropriateness of the practice of Islamic education as the basic education. Secondly, to correct view of nature (worldview) on the Islamic Education inMalaysia and thirdly, propose a resolution to act in the direction to reform an Islamic education sistem based on the Risale An-Nur, the works of a mujaddid figure namedBediuzzaman Said Nursi. The authors conclude with (a) a discussion that Islamic education must cultivate a sense of identity within culture and community, while working with ancestral cultural knowledge retentions. This calls for a previsioning of the educational sistem in public schools so as to introduce a more effective method of teaching diverse youth, (b) create the need and importance of the Quran in the national Education and (c) help learners to build self-confidence in the collective defense of cultural identity in an increasingly challenging social environment on this day.

Abstract

Salah satu aspek modernitas, Oksidentalisme, menjadi bagian dari wacana Islam dan Barat  disamping sejarah Orientalisme yang telah mengalami perkembangan panjang. Artikel ini membahas gagasan Oksidentalisme di Indonesia. Dialektika Oksidentalisme-Orientalisme dapat ditelusuri dengan melihat beberapa ide yang disampaikan oleh representasi intelektual Muslim Indonesia—Mukti Ali dan Nurcholis Madjid. Sebagai refleksi kritis terhadap fenomena Oksidentalisme, Carl W. Ernst menggarisbawahi proyeksi keilmuan konstruktif. Selanjutnya, dialog antarperadaban yang disampaikan Osman Bakar dapat membantu mengurai kompleksitas pemaknaan Oksidentalisme seperti misalnya yang dipaparkan Hassan Hanafi atau Ian Buruma. Artikel ini menegaskan bahwa dari sisi historisnya studi Oksidentalisme yang dipaparkan Mukti Ali dan Nurcholis Madjid merupakan aspek akademis tentang institusi Barat. Wacana akademis ini ternyata tidak sama dengan konsep Oksidentalisme seperti yang dipaparkan oleh Hassan Hanafi maupun Ian Buruma. Aspek lainnya adalah saling-belajar, kerjasama dan pemahaman bagian integral masyarakat Muslim dan Indonesia pada umumnya.

Abstract

In social context, the common reality indicates that women becoming victim of men’s suppression. In modern terminology, the suppression is called “misogyny” meaning direct or indirect suppression on women whether in a rude or soft manner. The suppression itself occurs since men (including Moslems) do not have gender awareness and sensitivity. The awareness on women inequality has been detected since the presence of gender analysis in sociology. This paper focuses on the perception of women marginality in terms of the anatomy, theological vision, and historical experience. The perception of marginality does not immediately judge on the superiority of men towards women and the marginality of women. This perception appears since the different divison of role between men and women has become an important part of human civilization dynamics. The perception on women marginality is then irrelevant correlated to the guidance applied by the Prophet Muhammad saw that gave the same chance among men and women. For this reason, the concept of equality between men and women has a significant root and foundation in religious texts.

Abstract

“Misunderstanding often causes a quarrel, even to understand traditional collection of stories relating words or deeds of Muhammad. Now, some of Moslems judge one each other just for getting title“ahl sunna” and claim other to “ahl bida’” without thinking about togetherness which is more important. Although it’s a complicative problem but has to be solved. One of the ways is reinterpreting hadith about muh}das especially by Indonesian personage. This article aims to get an Indonesian muh}das view and his understanding of hadith method.”

Abstract

This article attempts to understand the hadith Man baddala dînahû faqtulûhu, with the communication semiotics of hadith adopted from the theory of communication semiotics of Umberto Eco. to this study, I conclude that the Prophet as delivered sources of the tradition toward our semiotic mind as the destination through some communication components. After the processing of  unlimited semiosis in the destination, the appeared understanding fabric related to the word faqtulûhu in the tradition refer to the meaning “warn him”, and then it could be saying “give him advice.” And further reinterpretation to be “honor him. “The latter Interpretant could be  the final logical interpretant that has a great contribution to the modern context.
