Abstract

This experiment  was conducted to determine the effect of type of packaging materials on quality of wafer complete ration based on palm fronds (WRKPS) after being stored for four weeks. The research used Completely Randomized Design with 5 treatments and each having 2 replications. Treatments applied is T0 = WRKPS without packaging (as a control), T1-KB = WRKPS with packaging bags of rice, T2-KP = WRKPS with packaging plastic bags, T3-KT = WRKPS with packaging paper bags and T4-KG = WRKPS with packaging jute sacks. The parameters measured were changes the dry matter contents, organic matter, crude protein, crude fat and crude fiber of WRKPS. Results showed that the type of packaging significantly affect the dry matter content and crude fat. However the treatment did not affect the content of organic matter, crude protein and crude fiber of WRKPS. In conclusion, the plastic bag and a paper sack is the best packaging in maintaining quality of WRKPS during storage for 4 weeks. Key words : WRKPS, storage, packaging materials

Abstract

Palm Kernel Meal (PKM), one of by products from palm oil processing industry, has high potency as feedstuffs due to its availability. PKM, however, has combination problems of shell contamination, containing high non starch-polysaccharide (NSP) dominated with mannan molecules, and low protein content which causes the utilization of PKM in poultry diet is very limited (< 3%). On the other hand, mannanoligosaccharides from PKM may be used to inhibit pathogenic bacteria in poultry gut. Therefore, separation of cell wall of PKM to isolate mannan molecules and extraction of its protein compounds was alternative methods to solve the feed problem. The protein extraction increases the protein content at least 3 folds. The aims of the study were to investigate the effect of PKMCP inclusion with and without fortification in ration on liver and small intestine histopathology of layer quails. The PKM (200 g) was blended in hot water and/or 0,05N acetic acid (800 ml) for 20 minutes, and centrifuged to separate the supernatant from extracted PKM. Supernatant from hot water, acetic acid and 1 N NaOH extraction were precipitated with 0.1 N HCl with the following treatments: the first extractions were carried out in water + broken glass  (E1); water + broken glass (E2); 0,05 N acetic acid + broken glass (E3); or in 0,05 N acetic acid + broken glass (E4), while the second extraction for all PKM residues was carried out in 1N NaOH technical (E1, E3) and pro-analysis (E2, E4), and precipitated with 0.1N HCl until isoelectric point. The best extraction product (R1) in term of recovery protein was also compared chemically and biologically with PKM (R2), and soybean meal (R3) in completely randomized design with 3 treatments and 5 replications. Parameter measured were histopathology evaluation of liver and small intestine. Score lesion of duodenum, jejunum, ileum and liver of quails received PKMCP were 0.70, 0.64, 0.68 and 1.76, while SBM were 0.82, 0.66, 0.76 and 1.02 respectively. It is concluded that PKMCP did not give negative effect on quails performance observed from score lesion and histopathology evaluation of liver and small intestine. Abstract

Bioconversion of cocoa pod husk (CPH) is a way to increase lignocellulosic substance quality. Fermentation process in bioconversion is affected by some factors as length of fermentation. This research was aimed to determine the optimum length of fermentation with Phanerochaete chrysosporium and evaluate CPH composition response. The length of fermentation periods were 0; 5; 10; 15; 20 and 25 days. Measured parameters were soluble substance, pH of substrate, chemical composition, loss of dry matter, organic matter, and lignin and ratio celluloce to lignin.  The results showed that crude protein content of fermented CPH was increased (P<0.05) compared to unfermented CPH. The highest lignin degradation (38.61%), the ratio of cellulose to lignin (1.25) and efficiency of biodegradation process (5.65) recorded at day 10 fermentation. It could be concluded that the optimum length of CPH fermentation was 10 days. Keyword: Fermentation, cocoa pod husk, ratio cellulose to lignin, lignin degradation

Abstract

The use of palm kernel meal (PKM) in commercial diet by feedindustry is still lower than 5% (1-3%), one of the factors that limit the optimum use of PKM is shell contamination that may affect integrity of intestinal ville. Therefore fractionation is considered one of the solutions. The aims of the study were to fractionate and characterize physical-chemical properties of PKM. Fractionation of palm kernel meal was done using a vibrator ball mill equipped with sieve of 4, 8, 16, 30, 50, 100 and 400 mesh. Protein, crude fiber, Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) and Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) of the fractionation products were evaluated and the data were analyzed descriptively. Vibrator ball mill was capable of separating shell from PKM. However, the protein content of each fraction was similar. Specific gravity, bulk density, compacted bulk density and angle of repose of PKM were 1.53, 0.56, 0.76 g/mL and 35.44o respectively. It is concluded that fractionation of PKM using vibrator ball mill was capable of separating shell from PKM. Keywords: fractionation; physico-chemical characteristics; palm kernel meal

Abstract

The objectives of this experiment were to identify enzymes in rumen liquor of local and imported cattle obtained from abattoir and evaluate the application of enzymes from rumen liquor of cattle against several local feedstuffs for broiler. Enzymes were extracted by combination method of filtration, centrifugation, and precipitation with ammonium sulphate. Doses of enzyme were used at level of 0% (without rumen liquor enzyme), 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5% and 3.0% (v/w). Optimum precipitation of the enzymes from local and imported cattle were reached at the concentration of 60 and 70 % of ammonium sulphate, respectively. Results showed that the enzymes were able to hydrolyze local feedstuffs and optimum level of enzymes for hydrolysis of rice bran, full fat soybean meal and copra meal was 2.5%, for cassava leaf meal and palm kernel meal was 2.0%, and optimum level of enzymes for broiler diet based on corn-soya was 1.0%. It is concluded that rumen liquor of cattle from abattoir contained cellulase, xylanase, mannanase, amylase, phytase and protease and the enzymes were able to hydrolyze local feedstuffs to improved quality of broiler diet composed of local feedstuffs. Abstract

This research was conducted in four Regency of Jambi Province to know forage structure and composition under oil palm plantation. Vegetation analysis was used 1x1 m2 square were 40 unit for all regency. Vegetation dominance is important value index. Bungo regency Ludwigia perennis L. (INP=115.95), Merangin regency Axonopus compressus (Sw.) Beauv. (INP=86.35), Tebo regency Ottochloa nodosa (Kunth) Dandy (INP=70.22) and Muaro Jambi regency Cyperus kyllingia Endl (INP=54.69). Forage has important role in integration of livestock with oil palm plantation. Key word: Forage and Important value index.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to find out the influence of head shrimp in increasing yolk colour index and diet saved value of duck. This research used 28 Alabio ducks (6 months old), divided into 4 treatments and 7 replicates, where 1 duck in each replication. The treatments were; R1) was 100% of basal diets (BD); R2) BD + 3% of shrimp head meals (SH); R3) BD + 6% SH and R4) BD + 9% of SH. The results of this research showed that there was no significant influence of shrimp head meals on consumption and also the ratio efficiency of diet (P>0,05). However, using 9% shrimp head meals can increase yolk colour index with the score 10 RCF. In addition, in this research, the treatments were not giving influence to egg production yet. The assumption of this, the diversity of the first time each duck egg production made the diversity of egg production. Treatment of 6% shrimp head meals was the best level in microba count test to diet (microba count in 16th day was (1,5 x 106) almost the same with first day (1,7 x 106). It mean, using head shrimp in diet influenced diet saved value, it caused decreasing of microba count (16th day) and almost the same with microba count in first day. Abstract

The objectives of this study to make Lactobacillus plantarum, L. brevis and L. acidophilus which isolated from fermented buffalo milk to be used as starter cultures in making of  product curd from cow milk. The experiment use fresh cow milk and starter culture of Lactobacillus plantarum, L. brevis, and L. acidophilus. Starter culture was added about 3% from milk volume than incubated at room temperature during 48 hours. The treatments were fermentation with L. plantarum (A1), L. plantarum + L. brevis (A2), L. plantarum + L. acidophilus ( A3), and L. plantarum +. brevis + L. acidophilus (A4). The result of the experiment showed that total of all starter culture bacteria have qualified in the range of total bacteria to produce ferment milk that is 5.8 x 109–9.7 x 109 cfu/ml. Chemical characteristics which include content of water, protein, fat, ash, acid, pH, and total lactic acid bacteria were not significantly differences among treatments of starter culture. There were no differences among treatments on preference test include colour, aroma, flavour, viscosity and texture of the curd. It was concluded that chemical and microbiological characteristics of cows milk curd were not affected by using single or combination starter culture. Abstract

This study aims to assess the characteristics of progressive motilitas and spermatozoa membrane integrity in frozen semen of Bali cattle and its association with the results of artificial insemination. Variables measured were progressive motility (MP), membrane integrity (MI) and the variable success of artificial insemination include Non Return Rate (NR), and conception rate (CR) and services per conception (S / C). The results showed that MP = 39.18%, MI = 75.69%, NR = 71.68%, CR = 58.78%, and S / C = 1.72. Progressive sperm motility and sperm membrane integrity of the Bali cattle affect the success of artificial insemination (P <0.01). Abstract

Lactic acid bacteria as probiotic are considered alternative to antibiotic growth promotor. The aims of this study were to investigate quality and quantity of lactic acid bacteria isolated from completed feed silage based on corn with capsulation. Lactic acid bacteria were coated with sodium alginat and karragenan, and processed by spray or freeze dried. The capsulation products were evaluated for number of lactic acid bacteria and inhibition ability. Data from factorial Completely Randomized Design were analyzed variance followed by Duncan test. The result showed that the lactic acid bacteria isolated from completed feed based on corn silage coated with sodium alginat processed spray dried. It is concluded that lactic acid bacteria from isolated from completed feed based on corn silage coated with sodium alginat processed spray dried the best in term of number latic acid bacteria, inhibition ability and storage time.
