Abstract

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) has been developed as a tool for the simultaneous and quantitative determination of organic components, including chemical bond, as well as organic content (e.g. protein, carbohydrate and lipid). However, until now, there is no further information for the detailed information in the FTIR peaks. The objective of this study was to demonstrate how to read and assess chemical bond and structure in the organic material. The analysis was then compared with the literatures. The step-by-step method on how to read the FTIR data was presented, including reviewing simple to the complex organic materials. This study is potential to be used as a standard information on how to read FTIR peaks in the biochemical and organic materials.

Abstract

Graphite nanomaterials offer distinct advantages over micro-scale reinforcing fibers in terms of engineering properties and geometric attributes. Thorough dispersion and effective interfacial interactions through proper functionalization of carbon nanofibers are the prerequisites for their effective use in high performance cementitious matrices. Furthermore, use of nano- and micro-scale reinforcements together provides reinforcing effects at different scales, thus rendering balanced gains in engineering properties of the matrix. However, their use in coarser high-performance matrices has not been evaluated thoroughly. The results show improvements in all flexural attributes, impact and abrasion resistance of DSP concrete with addition of 0.16 vol.% of oxidized and poly-acrylic acid physisorbed carbon nanofibers, over the corresponding properties of plain matrix. The results also point to synergetic effect of hybrid reinforcements in improving the various engineering properties of DSP concrete matrix, especially with low modulus polypropylene microfibers.

Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to evaluate the phytochemical screening of Sargassum sp and also to investigate the effect of its crude extracts on seed germination and seedling development of Capsicum annum. The samples were dried and made to coarse powder and stored at -20°C for further analysis. Crude extracts were prepared using three different solvents (DCM, methanol and hexane).   Different concentrations of crude extracts were prepared in solid medium using MS basal media and germination tests were carried out in vitro. High concentration (50ul/mL) of hexane extract exhibited most promoting effect on seed germination and seedling development of Capsicum annum followed by methanol (50ul/mL) and DCM (50ul/mL). The presence of micro and macro nutrients, vitamins, growth hormones and other constituents in the seaweed extract might be very much useful to the crop but their concentration should be appropriate to enhance growth and productivity. It may be concluded that Sargassum extracts could serve as cost effective and eco-friendly product for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

Currently, the usable energy is basically harvested from the fossil energy sources, including coal, oil, and gas, which are believed to harm the environment due to the emitted GHGs. The awareness to the climate change and limited reserve of fossil energy sources has led to a strong motivation to develop a new energy system which can facilitate three important pillars: security, clean environment, and economic opportunity. This future energy system is strongly expected to be able to blend both fossil and renewable energy sources, while minimize its environmental impacts. To realize it, the primary energy sources are converted to the efficient secondary energy sources, including electricity and hydrogen. These two kinds of secondary energy source are considered very promising in the future, following a high demand in many sectors. In transportation sector, both electricity and hydrogen are believed to become the future fuels as the deployment of electric and fuel cell vehicles is increasing rapidly. In this paper, several potential technologies to produce the energy cleanly from primary energy sources are introduced and evaluated. In addition, clean and efficient technologies in storage and utilization are also described.

Abstract

This article presents an investigation of the actual cooling effect on a lab-scale prototype of LPG-fueled vehicles. The cooling effect is obtained from heat absorption by LPG on the vaporizer. Water with a mass flow rate of 1, 2 and 3 lpm is flowed from the cooling box to the LPG evaporator and flow back to the cooling box. The car used in this study has a capacity of 1500 cc that rotates 1000, 1500, and 2000 rpm. The results showed that there was a relationship between cooling power with the increase in engine speed and mass flow rate of water that crosses the evaporator. The biggest cooling power is 378 Watts at 1000 rpm with a water mass flow rate of 3 lpm.

Abstract

The assessment system generally requires transparency and objectivity to assess student performance in terms of abstraction. Fuzzy logic method has been used as one of the best methods to reduce this uncertainty. Therefore, we have conducted a literature review to examine the application of fuzzy logic in assessing the performance of different students. The Preferred Reporting Items for the Systematics Review and Meta-Analysis Method (PRISMA) were used as the basic method for conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The articles reviewed were 38 articles from 2008 until 2018. All articles were classified based on the author, year of publication, type of journal or conference, sample size, context, data type, fuzzy technique, and basic findings. The results of this review show the positive effects of using fuzzy logic on student performance assessment. Overall, this review provides an appropriate reference for further research by identifying research needs in aspects of student performance assessment.

Abstract

Trending topics in Twitter is a collection of certain topics that are widely discussed by users. This study aims to design a model and strategy for finding trending topics from data streams on Twitter. The research approach was carried out in four stages, namely twitter data collection, preprocessing data, data analysis with sequential K-Means clustering and information processing. Sequential K-Means is used because it can receive input data sequentially and the cluster center can be updated. Testing of the model is carried out in three scenarios where each scenario is distinguished between the amount of data, time and parameter values. After that, evaluation of the results of clustering will be done using the Dunn Index method. Trending topics twitter application were created using the R language and produce output in the form of histograms. There are five topics being the trending topics in New York before the new year. The topic of "Times" relates to the presence of a new year's celebration night concert in Times Square. The "Hours" topic deals with the calculation of time and seconds towards 2017. "Eve" and "Party" topics relate to celebrations and the topic "Resolution" relating to hope and change for New Yorkers in in 2017.

Abstract

Gaza strip suffers from a serious shortage in water resources due to the continuous increase in population, life changes, political conditions and drought caused by climate change. Due to increased demand for water for domestic use, resulting accumulation of large quantities of wastewater in the treatment plant in Rafah. Therefore, reuse of treated wastewater is one of the most recently accepted approaches to save groundwater or domestic use. The aim of this research is to study the treated effluent quality from Rafah Treatment Plant, in addition to the effect of education level of the farmers on reusing treated wastewater for irrigation. A questionnaire was distributed to farmers to investigate the acceptance of using treated effluent for irrigation, meanwhile the effluent parameters tested were BOD, COD, TKN, NH4, NO3, P, Cd, Pb, and Cu accounted for 110, 250, 108, 127, 0.23, 17.9 mg/l, < 0.003, <0.001, and 19.9 µg/l. Most of reuse parameters were higher than the recommended levels for the effluent reuse based on the recommended Palestinian Standards for irrigation. About 80.7% of farmers accept using treated wastewater in irrigation and the Chi-square test analysis showed that, at P-value =0.00095 < α= 0.05, there is a close relationship between the educational level of farmers and the acceptance of using of treated wastewater in irrigation, as long as it is safe and healthy.

Abstract

As the worlds primary source of energy is depleting, an alternative particularly renewable energy is being explored. This work is a preliminary study on fast pyrolysis process of palm kernel shell to produce liquid fuel. The simulation uses pyrolysis data obtained from one of the previous works on fast pyrolysis of palm kernel shell. As there are no literature available on upgrading of bio oil from fast pyrolysis of palm kernel shell, the chemical reactions are synthesised based on upgrading of bio oil from different biomass. The upgraded oil is then analysed by comparing its distillate curve with that of the ASTM of gasoline. The distillation curves are shown to be quite similar as the components found in the oil almost resemble those in the gasoline. Thus, the bio oil from fast pyrolysis of palm kernel shell has almost similar components compared to the ASTM of gasoline.
