Abstract

This paper explains why Muhammadiyah, as the biggest Islamic movement in Indonesia, seems to be “silent” in dealing with tension between Indonesia and Malaysia. There are several potential factors of conflict: boundary, culture and migrant workers. Furthermore, migrant worker and boundary may cause casualties. In this regard, Muhammadiyah with its developed and extended membership, organizational structure and international network should take major part in the conflict resolution. However, conflict resolution capacity to respond the tension is becoming problem for Muhammadiyah itself. This paper uses a theory put forward by Becky Nesbitt on the role of INGOs and NGOs in three levels of conflict, namely, latent conflict, escalating hostilities conflict and peace building. The first and second level of conflict require advocacy and the third level employs people empowerment in reducing further conflict. To enhance the capacity, Muhammadiyah needs to transform and formulate a strategic action. In addition, it also needs to improve cooperation, research and network with the international leader and community.

Abstract

The field research was set to find out the correlations between the 1997 monetary crisis and the process of democratic consolidation in South Korea, especially in term of industrial relations. As complementary components of industrialization; state, business and labors are, by nature, often performed conflicting actions. Like in many other developing countries or newly industrializing countries, South Korea experienced a strong developmental state regime where state has a very tight relation with business group, while their labor policy was badly repressive. But as the 1997 crisis occurred, the three conflicting and competing parties seemed to agree to some points according to solve the problems affected by the crisis. The process of democratic consolidation seems to be swifted because of it. The question of why the crisis seems to swift the democratization needs to be observed by then. The research was started by exploring the cause and impact of the crisis to the three parties. Some facts were found that the 1997 crisis affected all the economic, social and political sectors of the nation, which by any means it became a common threat of the nation. Some strategic recovery programs were set up, some agreement were signed up, and by then the democratic consolidation were being confirmed.

Currently, in era of globalization, there is a trend that shows democratization and the agenda of good governance are suspected to become a neoliberal project aimed to strengthen the domination of market over the state. In the context of maintaining democracy and civil society, the agenda of good governance are not only implemented by public institutions, but also they are done by both global corporations and global governance institutions.

Abstract

Border problems are often originated from a very complex issue. Problems that arise are because of there is no uncertainty about the border, and disparity of boundary zone development between the country and neighboring countries. The latter problem often encourages the orientation and mobility of border communities who tend to prefer to more rapid development area. Problems can arise from the differences perception and outlook between the government and society about the meaning of border, as well. This paper proposed the concept of shared space as a strategic move to overcome that perceptual difference on the border. A space that is managed together both in planning and implementation, will be able to minimize the number of conflicts and tensions that often arise in the border region.
