Abstract

Background: The prevalence of ECC (Early Childhood Caries) is still problem in Indonesian, especially in children with special needs. Unstable economic development leads to a poorer economic situation and may have an impact on increasing the prevalence of ECC. This study aimed to investigate the Caries Status of ECC in children with special needs and its association with sociodemografi and parental socioeconomic circumstances in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesian.Method: This research was conducted in SDLB using questionnaire and Using World Health Organization for diagnosis of caries. Informed consent from parents was obtained. The study sample was 21 children aged 3-6 years which consisted of 12 boys and 9 girls. Data were tested by Spearman correlation. Result: The result showed that 85.7% of the children had ECC. The result also showed significant association between ECC in the child and the age of the mother (r= 0.453, p=0.018),  education level of the mother (r=0.741, p=0.0001), social status (r=0.807, p=0.0061) and other income (r=0.527, p=0.050). Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that there was a  significant association between caries status of a young child and the age of the mother, the socio-economic status and other incomeKeywords: ECC, caries status, special needs

Abstract

Background: Chronic periodontitis occurred mostly in productive ages. Chronic periodontitis was started by adherence and accumulation of plaque bacteria that caused vascular enhancement, PMN infiltration, and periodontal tissue destruction. This process caused bone calcium solubitily which went trough blood stream and excreted to gungiva sulci. Calcium in periodontal tissue could be found both in extracellular and intracellular matrix.Purpose: Purpose of this study was to know calcium level in gingival crevicular fluid of chronic periodontitis and compare calcium level in chronic periodontitis and gingivitis.Method: This study was analytic observational with cross sectional approach and got admission from ethic comission of Dental Faculty, Gadjah Mada University. The subjects were patients who came to dental hospital of Jember University. The subjects had to full fill informed consent. The subjects were selected according inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects  complying inclusion criteria were divided into gingivitis group (PI score 0 – 0.7) and chronic periodontitis (PI score 1 – 8.0). Gingival crevicular fluid samples were collected from teeth which got gingivitis and chronic periodontitis, GCF was absorbed using paperpoint and stored inside eppendorf tube. Paperpoint was added with 50 μL 0.02 M PBS pH 7.4 and 100 μL distilled water. Calcium level was measured by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Result: The result showed there was calcium in gingival crevicular fluid of chronic periodontitis. Mean of calcium level of chronic periodontitis was higher than  gingivitis. Conclusion: This study concluded there was calcium in gingival crevicular fluid of chronic periodontitis and calcium level of chronic periodontitis was higher than gingivitis. Keywords: gingival crevicular fluid, calcium, periodontal tissue, chronic periodontitis

Abstract

Background: ulcer is a pathological condition characterized by the loss of epithelial tissue. The average prevalence of ulcers in the oral cavity ranges between 15-30%. Paste of mangosteen rind which agent called xanthone can accelerate ulcer healing process, however histopathological observation of PMN (Polymorphonuclear) numbers and fibroblasts cells are required.Purpose: to determine the ability of mangosteen rind in treating ulcers caused by infection, mechanical and chemical trauma from the numbers of PMN and fibroblasts cells.Method: experimental studies, pre-posttest control group design, with randomized technique, total sample of 36 Male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups @ 6 where 3 treatment groups were smeared paste of rind mangosteen and the others without treatment, then from each group were decapitated onday 3rd, 7th and 10th. Result: Ulcer from mechanical and chemical trauma had been healing on 7th day compared with untreated on 9th day. Similarly ulcer infection has been healing on 9th day compared with untreated on 10th day. Anova test(repeated) shows that there is diameter difference significantly between day 1 to 8 (pvalue<0,001). The usage of xanthone decreases amount of PMN cells during inflammation phase and increases amount of fibroblast cells during proliferation phase. Conclusion: xanthone could accelerate healing process as well as shrinkage of ulcus diameter compared with untreated ulcer. Keywords: Oral Ulcer, Xanthone, PMN Cell, Fibroblasts Cell

Abstract

Background: Patient safety already a high priority in the health service aspect in the hospital and has become demands of the needs in the health services, as it will hopefully minimize the risk of unexpected occurrences. Reducing the conflict between health workers and patients, reducing the incidence of medical disputes, reducing the demands and legal proceedings and  administrative charges of malpractice accusation are getting more and more against hospital. WHO Collaborating Centre for Patient Safety has published Nine Life Saving Patient Safety Solutions. The purpose of this research was to review and analyze the application of nine life saving patient safety solutions in RS PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul.Method: This case study was qualitative to review nine life saving safety patient solutions in RS PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul. The data has been collected with interview, observation, and analysis of documents in RS PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul. The research was held in RS PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul in  October 2011. The object of this research is RS PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul. While the subject of this research is the chairman of the patient safety team, Assistant Manager of Pharmacy, Assistant Manager of ICU, Assistant Manager of  surgery room, Assistant Manager of Emergency room, Assistant Manager of nursing, head of the ward hall Al Kahfi, head of the ward hall Al A’raf, and the head of the ward hall Ar Rahman. Result: This study shows that the patient safety program in PKU Muhammadiyah Bantul was still initiated and built, whereas the implementation of nine life saving patient safety solutions program is not yet specific and detailed. However there are a few items from these items are already implemented and can become input in the implementation of the nine life saving patient safety solutions program.Summary: The implementation of nine life saving patient safety solutions program is not yet specific. Abstract

Introduction: Fennel plant is known as a medicine plant. Fennel plant parts that have the highest content is the seed. Essential oils, flavonoids, and saponins contained in fennel seed have an influence against candida albicans growth.Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the influence of various concentrations of fennel seed extract as a denture  cleanser against candida albicans growth on acrilyc plate. Methods: This research was an experimental laboratoty and study design was an experimental with post test only control group design. Total sample is 30 acrilyc plate measuring 6x1 cm. The sample were divided into 6 groups, 5 groups were  soaked in various concentrations of fennel seed extract (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%) and one groups was soaked in control positive polident. Soaking was done for 5 minutes. Candida  albicans were incubated for 48 hours at 37˚C. The result of this study were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and LSD (Least  Significance Difference). Results: Based on the one-way ANOVA test was done then  obtained significance value of 0,000 (p<0,05), so it can be concluded that there are significant differences between the two sets groups of at least. Based on the LSD test was done then obtained significance value of p<0,05 in all groups which means there are significant differences between each group, except in group fennel seed extract concentration of 100% with control  positive polident obtained 0,924 significance (p>0,05) which means there are no significant differences between two groups. Conclusion: The researchers’ conclusion that there was the influence of various concentration of fennel seed extract as a denture cleanser against candida albicans growth on aclilyc plate. Fennel seed extract concentration of 100% has the  greatest influence as a denture cleanser against candida albicans growth. Keywords: Fennel Seed, Candida albicans, Acrilyc Plate, Denture Cleanser
