Abstract

Background: The important aspect for child especially children with mental retardation is oral health. Children with mental retardation have limitations in motoric activities that relate to the actions of dental hygiene in normally, that activities is toothbrushing and it can do by bass and horizontal method. The aim of this study is to know the difference effectiveness toothbrushing with bass and horizontal method on the changed of plaque index in children with mental retardation. Method: The quasi experimental methods with non-equivalent group design with post test design was used in this research and have done on 24 children with mild mental retardation at SDLB Purwosari Kudus which divided two groups, 12 students brushing with bass method and 12 students brushing with horizontal method. Result: The data were tested with paired t-test to compare plaque index before and after toothbrushing with bass and horizontal method, showed that there were meaningful differences (p<0,05). Independent t-test to compare the changed of plaque index between both methods, showed that there were no meaningful differences (p>0,05). Conclusion: It concluded that both bass and horizontal method effectively on the changed of plaque index in children with mental retardation. There was no difference effectiveness between both methods.Keywords: bass method, horizontal method, plaque index, children with mental retardation

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is the main problem of oral health in the world. The preventive is consumption cheddar cheese with caseinfosfoprotein and calcium. This study aimed to determine whether the consumption of 10 grams cheddar cheese can increase salivary pH. Method: The type of this research method is experimental with pre and post design. The samples in this research were 30 students FKG Unissula who inclusion criteria, 10 people the treatment group (consuming 10 grams of cheddar cheese), 10 people positive control group (consuming chocolate biscuits), and 10 people negative control group. The data analysis techniques using Paired T Test to determine the salivary pH before and after treatment. Furthermore, to know differences among the three groups using One Way Anova Test and Post Hoc Test . Result: Based Test Paired T Test showed that the treatment and negative group increased salivary pH. Positive control group decreased salivary pH. Based on One Way Anova test significant value 0.000 (p≤0.05), it means differences between 3 groups. Based on Post Hoc Test found significant value p≤0.05, it means differences between one group to another. Conclusion: From study result concluded that consumption 10 grams of cheddar cheese can raise the salivary pH.Keywords: caries, pH saliva, cheddar cheese, casein fosfoprotein, calsium

Abstract

Background: Temulawak (curcuma xanthorrizae roxb) contains many substance such as xanthorrizol, curcumin, essential oil, flavonoid. Essential oil and flavonoid works by damaging the cell wall and protein denaturation can inhibits the growth of the fungi Candida albicans attached to the surface of the heat cured acrylic resin plate. The purpose of this study is to determine the extract Temulawak effect on the growth of Candida albicans at heat cured acrylic resin plate. Method : The Eksperiment is true experimental laboratories with post test only controlled group design. 10x10x2 mm Acrylic resin plate was soaked into Candida albicans suspension for 48 hours at 37o then soaked in curcuma xanthorrizae roxb extract 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, control group positive (chlorhexidine 0,2%), control negatif (water) for 8 hours at 37o. Result: The result of the experiment showed that control group (-)has the highest value (839,20 x 101 CFU/ml), while the least was 90% ekstract of curcuma xanthorrizae roxb group (23,40 x 101 CFU/ml). After normality and homogenity test was done, One Way Anova test was executed (p = 0,000. means p < 0,05). Conclussion: extract Temulawak can inhibit Candida albicans growth on heat cured acrylic resin.Keywords: heat cured acrylic resin, candida albicans, curcuma xanthorrizae roxb extract

Abstract

Background: Plaque plays an important role in causing caries and periodontal problems. Plaque control should be done chemically in an effort to reduce the accumulation of plaque in the oral cavity. Juice of red grapes (Vitis vinifera) has a chemical compound as an antibacterial catechins and tannins . The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of rinsing with red grape juice with different concentrations of chlorhexidine and 0.12 % during the 7 day study of the reduction of plaque index. Method: This study is quasi-experimental study which was conducted on 25 students Aisyiyah Orphanage. After Scaling and toothbrush cleaning, each sample rinsed with 10 ml of solution 3 times a day has been accepted in accordance with the treatment without taking action toothbrush for 7 days. Result: The mean plaque index in the treatment group began to experience a gradual decline in the fourth day until the seventh day of the study. From the results of Mann Whitney test analysis found significant differences between the various groups of SBA and chlorhexidine 0.12 % concentration with distilled water on the fourth to the seventh day of the study. But betweenthe SBA 100 % with chlorhexidine 0.12 % there is no significant difference. Conclusion: This can be concluded that rinsing with red grape juice with a concentration of 50 % , 75 % 100 % and chlorhexidine 0.12 % has efficacy in reducing the plaque index. 100 % SBA group is a group of the most effective concentration.Keywords: Juice of red grapes, Chlorhexidine, Plaque Index

Abstract

Background: Adolescents (7-12 years old) have a high potential of caries and periodontal infections. It happens due to fish diet of children at coastal and non coastal region. Fish nutrient contains mineral, fluoride which prevents demineralisation process. In addition, there is fatty acid which contains anti inflammation that prevent periodontal disease. The aim of the study is to determine the difference between fish consumption habit and oral health of coastal and non coastal people at Jepara district in 2012. Method: This research used analysis observational method with cross sectional design. It was done in 50 children at coastal region and 50 children at non coastal region in 2012. Those samples were collected using convenience sampling method. The fish diet pattern was measured with questionnaire. Caries status was measured with DMF-T index and gingival health was measured using Loe and Silness’ gingival index. Study result was analyzed with Mann-Whitney comparative test. Result: The analysis result showed that there was a significant difference of fish consumption pattern (p=0,000), DMF-T status (p=0,000) and gingival index (p=0,000) between people at coastal and non coastal area. Conclusion: There is a significant difference between fish consumption pattern and oral health status of coastal and non coastal children at Jepara district in 2012.Keywords: fish consumption, oral health status, dental caries, gingival index
