Abstract

Background: The important aspect for child especially children with mental retardation is oral health. Children with mental retardation have limitations in motoric activities that relate to the actions of dental hygiene in normally, that activities is toothbrushing and it can do by bass and horizontal method. The aim of this study is to know the difference effectiveness toothbrushing with bass and horizontal method on the changed of plaque index in children with mental retardation. Method: The quasi experimental methods with non-equivalent group design with post test design was used in this research and have done on 24 children with mild mental retardation at SDLB Purwosari Kudus which divided two groups, 12 students brushing with bass method and 12 students brushing with horizontal method. Result: The data were tested with paired t-test to compare plaque index before and after toothbrushing with bass and horizontal method, showed that there were meaningful differences (p<0,05). Independent t-test to compare the changed of plaque index between both methods, showed that there were no meaningful differences (p>0,05). Conclusion: It concluded that both bass and horizontal method effectively on the changed of plaque index in children with mental retardation. There was no difference effectiveness between both methods.Keywords: bass method, horizontal method, plaque index, children with mental retardation

Abstract

Background: Gingival pigmentation is the coloring/staining of the gingiva in the form of a dark purplish color or irregular light brown spots. This staining is derived from melanin granules produced by cells melanoblas. Gingival hyperpigmentation caused by excessive melanin deposition . The cause of this gingival hyperpigmentation is multifactorial : genetic factors , local and systemic . The aims of this article is to overbear the gingival hyperpigmentation with simple techniques , does not require several equipments , but gives contentment results to the patient . Discussion : The gingival melanin hyperpigmentation is not cause medical problems , usually to the point the appearance especially when talking and smiling . Depigmentation is periodontal plastic surgery to remove or reduce gingival hyperpigmentation . There are many ways to eliminate gingival hyperpigmentation , one of them is a surgical using scalpel . Depigmentation surgery does not require any special tools but gives satisfactory results for the patient. Conclusion : Hyperpigmentation gingival surgery techniques can be overcome by using scalpel surgery.

Abstract

Background: The aim of the case report is to demonstrate the importance of knowing the root canals configuration in the maxillary second premolars. Maxillary second premolars usually have one root canal, however in several cases there is more than one root canal with a variety of configurations. Method: multiple visit root canal treatment with a crown down technique on the maxillary second premolar with unusual root canals configuration which is confirmed using radiograph. Result: Based on radiograph, it was identified Vertucci type V root canal on the maxillary second premolars. After biomechanical preparation, obturation was conducted. When patient controlled, there were not problem and inflammation. Conclusion : This report described and discussed about the possibility of root canals variation on the maxillary second premolars. Careful examination using radiograph and deep knowledge, it is identified by the clinician in treating root canal treatment on that premolars.

Abstract

Background: The objective of this research is to investigate influence of polishing time and citric acid on microleakage in nanofiller composite resin restoration (Z350XT,3M). Method: The research was conducted on a class V restoration amount sample 24 on bovine teeth. The first group restoration was polished immediately after curing then was soaked in distilled water. The second group was polished immediately after curing and then was soaked in citric acid.The third group was polished after 24 hours of curing and then was soaked in distilled water. The fourth group was polished after 24 hours of curing then was soaked in citric acid. Samples were immersed for 7 days and then were soaked in methylene blue for 1 day and were split longitudinally and were observed using microskopstereo and were measured using calipers. Result: Data were analized by Kruskal-wallis with the result of p > 0,05, there is a significant difference in group I, II, III, and IV. Mann- Whitney test results the difference between the data. Conclusion: The conclution is there were significant differences between the groups which immersed with citric acid of distilled water and there is no significant difference between groups which polished immediately and polished 24 hours later.

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is the inflammation of periodontal tissue that is characterized by the migration to the apical epithelial jungsional with clinical signs of an increase in probing depth. Periodontitis is one of the oral manifestations in patients with DM. CRP is a protein alpha-globulin produced in the liver and increased levels of inflammatory process in the event. In diabetic patients increased levels of CRP resulted in periodontal tissue destruction. The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of CRP levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with periodontitis. Method: This research was conducted using analytical observational research methods. The samples used were type 2 diabetes patients with periodontitis and the control group of patients with type 2 diabetes without periodontitis in Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital . All of samples were examined periodontal index, levels of CRP and oral hygiene. Result: Mann Whitney’s test show significance p=0.000, which means there are significant differences between groups. Spearman-Kendall’s correlation show that relationship between CRP and periodontal index p=0.000 with a correlation coefficient 0.875 means p<0.05 there was that a significant relationship exists between them and the relationship is strong . In relation OH and periodontitis index p=0.030 with a correlation coefficient of 0.650 means p<0.05 there was that a significant relationship exists between them and the relationship strong . Conclusion: It can be concluded that CRP levels in patients type 2 diabetes with periodontitis is higher than the patients type 2 diabetes without periodontitis. And there is a strong relationship between levels of CRP with periodontitis index , and also a strong relationship between periodontitis and OH index .Keywords: Diabetes Mellitus, Periodontitis, C-Reactive Protein, Oral hygiene

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is the main problem of oral health in the world. The preventive is consumption cheddar cheese with caseinfosfoprotein and calcium. This study aimed to determine whether the consumption of 10 grams cheddar cheese can increase salivary pH. Method: The type of this research method is experimental with pre and post design. The samples in this research were 30 students FKG Unissula who inclusion criteria, 10 people the treatment group (consuming 10 grams of cheddar cheese), 10 people positive control group (consuming chocolate biscuits), and 10 people negative control group. The data analysis techniques using Paired T Test to determine the salivary pH before and after treatment. Furthermore, to know differences among the three groups using One Way Anova Test and Post Hoc Test . Result: Based Test Paired T Test showed that the treatment and negative group increased salivary pH. Positive control group decreased salivary pH. Based on One Way Anova test significant value 0.000 (p≤0.05), it means differences between 3 groups. Based on Post Hoc Test found significant value p≤0.05, it means differences between one group to another. Conclusion: From study result concluded that consumption 10 grams of cheddar cheese can raise the salivary pH.Keywords: caries, pH saliva, cheddar cheese, casein fosfoprotein, calsium

Abstract

Glass ionomer cement (GIC) is a material that can release fluoride to prevent caries especially in primary teeth. One of the developments of glass ionomer cement in the world of pediatry dentistry is resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). The resin-modified glass ionomer cement were still maintaining the clinical advantages oforiginal material, such as fluoride realease, good compatibility and aestehetically. The mechanical properties of rmgic is more higher than gic. These materials have a better adhesion, higher moisture resistance, and a longer shelft life. Abstract

Background: Banana counted as nearly perfect food since it contains six nutrients : water , sugar , proteins , fats , vitamins , and minerals . Because of that , bananas are often used as a staple food for most people because of its nutritional value. However, sometimes people do not realize the benefits of bananas as a whole , from leaves , fruits , flowers and stems of the bananas . Penggaron Lor society , still minimal in using the banana plant . Usually the community will sell fruit and leaves to the market , so that the results obtained from the banana plant community less than optimal. Method : This study is an observational analytic study . The research was done in the Village of Penggaron Lor Semarang , and was conducted in March-June 2014. The instrument in this research was primary data obtained directly from respondents through interviews using questionnaires distributed before and after counseling . To determine whether there are differences in knowledge before and after counseling on the benefits of banana plants as a medium for maintaining oral hygiene, statistical test Wilcoxon Sign Ranks test was conducted, and processed with SPSS. Result: The results of SPSS calculation because the data is not normal ( p value < 0.05), then the data was processed using the non-parametric test for two sample pairs , ie Wilcoxon Sign Ranks test , and obtained p value of 0.008 . This means that there was a significant difference between the mean value of the pre-test and post-test. Conclusion : there are differences in knowledge before and after counseling , counseling means that a significant impact on respondents knowledge of the benefits of banana plants for maintain oral health.

Abstract

Background: Nowdays many people who care about the health switching from chemical drugs to herbal medicine. There are many herbs that used for health. One is miswak (Salvadora persica) are many benefits to general health and dental health. Siwak can help inhibit dental plaque. Research purposes to determine effectiveness miswak extract against plaque formation. Method: The research was conducted 35 students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Sale. The samples were divided into five groups, each group of 7 people to extract Siwak 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and chlorheksidin group. Measurement of plaque index measurement using PHP Plaque Index (Patient Hygiene Performance Index) according Podshadley and Haley. Result: The criteria of dental plaque before rinsing dominant medium, with an average index plaque before rinsing 1,833 chlorheksidin group; 2.119 miswak extract 25%, 2,833 miswak extract 50%; 1,595 miswak extract 75%, and 2,905 miswak extract 100%. The criteria dominant plaque index after rinsing well, with an average index plaque after rinsing 1,476 chlorheksidin group; 1,286 miswak extract 25%; 0,929 miswak extract 50%; 0.690 miswak extract 75%, and 1,310 miswak extract 100%. P value of the one way ANOVA test after rinsing plaque index = 0.018 (p <0.05), means that the average index of dental plaque after rinsing significantly different. Post hoc test results showed 50% miswak extract group and 100% higher than chlorheksidin group, and 25% miswak extract and 75%. Conclusion: Concluded that miswak extract effective against dental plaque formation inhibition. Because the content of trimethylamine (TMA) has miswak which prevents sediment (deposit) particles on the surface of teeth.

Abstract

Background: Needs of dental cosmetic services increased due to peoples desire to get a brighter and whiter smile. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is one of bleaching substance that most commonly used. Use of H2O2 in a high concentration can cause a negative impact on the oral cavity. Honey is a natural ingredient that can whiten teeth. This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration of honey on tooth colour changes of teeth whitening process. Method: This research was an experimental in vitro study using pretest-posttest design with teeth as a research sample. 24 premolars teeth as samples were soaked in various concentration of honey (25%, 35%, 50%, 75%). The colour of teeth were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after treatment. Teeth colour were analyzed by paired samples T-test. Result: Paired T-test showed p<0.05, which means that concentration of honey affected on tooth colour changes. One way ANOVA test results showed concentrations of honey significantly affect tooth discoloration (p <0,05). Post hoc test results showed significant difference On the concentration of 25% of the concentration of honey 50%, 75%, but on a concentration of 25% honey and 35% there is no significant difference. Conclusion: From these results, it can be concluded that the concentration of honey affected on tooth colour changes in an in vitro tooth whitening process.
