Abstract

This method used to know the effectiveness of EMT in teaching vocabulary. The writer conducted an experimental research to find the effectiveness of EMT in teaching vocabulary. EMT is used as the independent variable, while translation is as dependent variable. In this research, the target population or the subject of the research is the fifth grade students of one of ElementarySchool in South PurwokertoSubdistric. There are some problems directly faced by the students in learning vocabulary, such as: 1) pronunciation problems, actually student wants to be able to speak English fluently. Most of students have problem in their pronunciations. 2) memorizing problems, learners have some problem on remembering the vocabularies that have been learned.There are a lot of technique and media which can be used to learn English especially Environment Mnemonic Technique (EMT). EMT can use to help the students to memorize the words easily. To incorporate games and activities while introducing a topic to a classroom can be very motivating as they arouse interest and concentrate attention while giving the illusion that one is merely playing games. Abstract

The research was conducted in English department of Muhammadiyah University og Purwokerto. The object of the research was fourth semester students of English Department Class C as the experimental group and those of class D as the control group. I administered pre test to both groups to examine their initial competence. The experimental group was given the treatment by Inquiry Based Teaching while the control the control group was taught by employing conventional learning model lecturing and discussion. The design of the study was quasy experimental research. The data collection usedtest as the instrument to measure the students competence . It was found out the test was 4,482, it was then compared to t_tabel with significant level @ = 0,05. The t Value was higher than t-tabel (4,482>1,993), meaning that the implementation of Inquiry based Teaching could improve the students understanding about the concept of Instructional Media and the Implementation. It could be seen from the significant difference of post test of two groups. It can be concluded that the hypothesis stating that teaching Instructional Media using Inquiry Based Teaching is effectif was proven. Keywords: Inquiry Based Teaching, instructional Media

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know the effectiveness of Think Pair Share for teaching Speaking. This research was conducted at one of Senior High School in Purwokerto. The Research design used is experimental study. The research findings imply that the use of Think Pair Share can motivate students speaking competen than those taught using discussion. In learning speaking, the common problem faced by the syudents is how to explore their idea. Through this technique students will think first about the topic, then they can explore their ideasby asking some one opinion, and at the end they can share with anothe group confidently since they have already make some discussion with their team. By implementing Think Pair Share, the students will have enough time to speak both in pair and in group. By doing Think Pair Share students will be motivated in learning English especially in speaking activity. It also improves and keeps the cooperation. The used of Think Pair Share is strongly suggested since, the students not only getting a better result of their speaking, but also enlarging students vocabulary. Students are motivated to do the speaking activity through this technique. This method will give the students time to practice the target language and to reflect themselves. Abstract

The objective of the research is to know the effectiveness of Snake and Ladder board Games in teaching vocabulary. This research was conducted at one of Private Junior High School in Purwokerto. The Research design used is experimental study. The research findings imply that the use of Snake and Ladder Board Game can foster the students’ vocabulary than those taught using translation. In learning vocabulary, the essential problem faced by the students is how to remember the vocabulary. Findout the vocabulary by themselves, it will help students to memorize the vocabulary longer. Having long term memory about the vocabulary makes them easily to retrieve it when they need it. By implementing Snake and Ladder game, the students will find out their vocabulary easily. They will find out the vocabulary when they have to answer the question in the board. The board providing word, phrase or simple question and the picture as the key word will help them to find out the vocabulary. Besides that, the unforgettable moments when they play Snake and ladder game will help students to memorize the acquired vocabulary easily or it will encourage students to have long term memory about the vocabulary. By playing Snake and ladder game, the students will be motivated in learning English vocabulary. It also encourages and increases cooperation. Abstract

Apabila seorang pengajar bahasa Inggris mendapat tugas untuk mengajar mata kuliah readig maka di daIam kepalanya akan muncul beberapa pertanyaan, seperti apakah dia hanya meminta siswa untuk me-read aloud, menerjemahkan. Menganalisis grammar dan vocabulary dalam teks yang diberikana atau dia harus mengajar teknik membaca, seperti skimming dim scanning. Untuk menjawab ini kita harus mengetahui bahwa terdapat beberapa orientasi dalam membelajaran reading. Apa yang sering dilakukan guru pada saat sekarang ini Iebih berorientasi pada content atau content oriented. Ini terlihat misalnya pada aktivitas di mana pembelajar diminta untuk mencari maiin idea, menggunakan teknik-teknik membaca seperti scanning, skimming. Hal itu juga terlihat pada aktivitas-aktivitas seperti pre-reading, whilst, dan post reading activities. Orieotasi lain adalah pada bahasa Inggris (language oriented) itu sendiri. Pembelajaran yang berorientasi bahasa memiliki aktivitas inti daIam bentuk anaIisis bentuk bahasa yang digunakan dalam teks. Ini meliputi anaIisis terhadap grammar dan vocabulary.Dengan dua orientasi besar ini, apakah ini merupakan pilihan atau bias diintegrasikan. Tulisan ini bermaksud untuk memberi kerangka pikir dalam memandang mata kuIiah reading daIam konteks yang realistis.

Abstract

This research aims 1) describing the role of Magic English for learning English, 2) to know the effectiveness and efficiency the usage of this audiovisual towards learning English in Elementary School, This research is an experimental experiment. This research is hold in 2 Schools. The method for collecting data is divided into 2 ways. they are by using questions and test. The quantitative data analysis used to know the score. They are divided into 2 periods. The first period shows that the average scores are 60,857 pre-test and 67,428 for post-test ; and for second period, the score results 62,142 for pre-test and 67,523 for post-test. The other hand, group 56,097 for pre-test and 61,756 for post-test ; and for the second period it reaches 57,707 for pretest and 63,609 for post-test. The data analyze from the questioners, the researcher used descriptive quantitative technique. The result of the data showed that the usage of audiovisual Magic English gives motivation and significant contribution for learning English. It can be proven by seeing the answers from the respondences whom like in learning English by Magic English 83 students ao 100 % and feel happy and easier in teaming English 79 or 95,1 %. Beside that, the students have more motivation in teaming English 83 or 100%. Kata kunci: Magic English, audiovisual, media

Flouting Maxims of Politeness in Utterances

Abstract

This paper dealt with the politeness principle by focusing framework of politeness. It addressed the interrelationship politeness as a strategic device in political practices. The paper discussed about politeness as forms of behavior that establish and maintain comity. That was the ability of participants in a social interaction to engage in interaction in an atmosphere of relative harmony. Politeness as a theoretical construct were clearly addressed and acknowledged in the research. The flouting maxims of politeness could be shown in the data. The indirect strategies as stated by Beebe Takashi and Ulis Weltz (1990) were used as the guide of analyzing the data. The strategies were described as strategies in utterances that were used of both candidates, Mc Cain and Obama. The data were utterances of both presidential candidates in some campaigns. Those showed some strategies such as statement of negative consequences strategy, critic strategy, disagreement strategy, and sarcasm strategy. Those strategies were used for some purposes, such as: attacking opponents’ program, underestimating the interlocutor, and comparing the programs. In another hand, flouting maxims were found such as generosity maxim, approbation maxim, and agreement maxim which have some purposes. The purposes are to give benefit to speaker, to praise the speaker, and to dispraise others (interlocutor). Keywords: politeness, utterances, maxim of politeness and strategies.

Abstract

General characteristics of children that are related to their capability and aptitude are: 1) they ask question all the time, 2) they are able to make some decisions about their own learning, 3) they have definite views about what they like and don’t like doing, and 4) they are able to work with others and learn from others. In learning english, it seems difficult for them to pronounce well, when they read some vocabularies. The following activities can be applied in the classroom, to make them happy and enjoy the lesson. It just need a simple media, since every school has a tape recorder. English children songs are provided in some bookstores, and the price is not so expensive. The students will satisfy and enjoy listening to the song. The students are able to memorize the words and their pronunciation easily, it will help students in learning english pronunciation. KEY WORDS: children song, pronunciation

Abstract

The use of computer in educational institutions and the growth of computer users each year led to the development of computer assisted language learning (CALL) software package. CALL had been used extensively for teaching and learning, which assisted teachers to provide various learning materials. However, the questions of which software package was suitable and appropriate for learners or whether learners and teachers were able to use the software package often raised ever since. It was widely known that a checklist, questionnaires and interviews were common ways to conduct an evaluation of a CALL software package. From those three ways, questionnaires and a checklist were the most common evaluation form established to analyse a software package. Therefore, this article aimed at how a teacher was able to select appropriate criteria and to compose an evaluation form in order to analyse a CALL software package. This paper was a non-research paper, which focused on reading past and current literatures of analysing a software package for learning a language. This paper discussed that behaviourist and acquisition approaches (Hubbard, 1982) were the appropriate criteria to assess usefulness of a software package from teacher and learners’ perspectives related to their experience of teaching and learning a language. Meanwhile, Bradin (1999) introduced two steps; feasibility and quality, in which feasibility focused on understanding the basic requirement of a software package and quality were ensuring users to know the content, operation, and format qualities of a software package. The content quality should highlight the curriculum, learners’ needs, and the appropriateness of learning materials. On the other hand, the format quality was chosen for making sure that the design of a software package was interesting for the users and each tool was able to be used effectively. Additionally, the operation quality was selected as a software package should provide a demo or preview instruction in order to minimise troubles when it was being operated by users in the classroom. Abstract

Penelitian berjudul Penerapan Konsep Pembelajaran Aktif, Kreatif, Efektif, dan Menyenangkan (PAKEM) Dalam Menyimak Puisi Untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Apresiai Sastra Mahasiswa PGSD S-1 Tahun Ajaran 2010-2011 bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan apresiasi sastra melalui konsep PAKEM dalam proses pembelajaran dengan mengguanakan media kartu bergambar pada mahasiswa PGSD S-1 Tahun Ajaran 2010-2011. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas dengan subyek penelitian seluruh mahasiswa Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Dasar S-1 Tahun Ajaran 2010-2011 kelas D yang berjumlah 51 mahasiswa terdiri dari 16 mahasiswa dan 35 mahasiswi. Proses penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus, setiap siklus terdiri atas dua kali pertemuan. Masing-masing pertemuan terdiri atas 2 jam mata kuliah (2 x 50 menit). Untuk mengetahui keadaan awal dilakukan pre test, dan data pre test digunakan sebagai dasar tindakan pada siklus I. Setelah penyampaian materi tentang puisi dengan menerapkan konsep PAKEM mengguanakan media kartu bergambar, diakhiri dengan post test silkus I. Data post test siklus I digunakan sebagai tindakan pada siklus II, diakhiri dengan analisis dan refleksi keseluruhan siklus. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara test dan non test. Dengan cara test melalui Pre test dan Post test, sedangkan dengan cara non test melalui observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Sumber yang digunakan untuk mengolah data adalah skor atau dari data kuantitatif (skor penulisan puisi) dan data kualitatif. Hasil dari pengolahan data digunakan untuk menggambarkan ketercapaian tindakan terhadap peningkatan apresiasi sastra mahasiswa melaluai konsep PAKEM denagn media kartu bergambar. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dari hasil penelitian, pengamatan , dan evaluasi. Setelah dilakukan tindakan, ternyata apresiasi sastra mahasiswa meningkat dalam bentuk menulis puisi. Siklus I yang tuntas belajar 52 % dan yang belum tuntas 48 % denagn nilai rata-rata 72. Pada siklus II mahasiswa yang tuntas belajar 75 % dan yang belum tuntas 20 % dengan nilai rata-rata 77. Berdasarkan uraian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan konsep PAKEM dengan media kartu bergambar dapat meningkatkan apresiasi sastra mahasiswa PGSD S-1 Tahun Ajaran 2010-2011.
