Abstract

Banggai Kepulauan district has potency and investment opportunities in agricultural sector particularly food crop sub sector whichis based on local priority commodities.  One of the food crops that have investment opportunity is Banggai yum.  It is the original food source for people in Banggai Kepulauan district which has been practiced from generation to generation.  The development of Banggai yum currently is still in the stage of yet becoming value added products.  In general, the people consume Banggai yum by simply processing it either through boiling or frying, thus it has not yet processed into flour or noodle or other type of processed products. The aims of this research were (1) to determine the income of Banggai yum farming system in South Totikum sub district of Banggai Kepulauan district and (2) to determine the development strategy of Banggai yum farming system in South Totikum       sub district of Banggai Kepulauan district.  The research location was purposively determined   based on the largest land area size of Banggai yum cultivation.  Income analysis was used to analyze the farming system income with the equation of π = TR – TC to generate R/C  value, while the development strategy was analyzed using SWOT analysis.  The research   results showed that Banggai yum is feasible to be developed with the W – O (Weaknesses-Opportunities) strategy.  The programs and activities to support the strategy include (1) utilizing climate and land suitability in which no shifting cultivation is adopted, (2) promoting Banggai yum through tourism sector by introducing local wisdom, thus easily opening market accessibility, and (3) utilizing Banggai yum potency and high economy value to attract investment for increasing value added of its end products. Keywords: Banggai yum, Farming System, Income, and SWOT.

Abstract

Respondent samples of 20 people were determined through a census technique.  Data was analyzed using a multi linier regression of Cobb –Douglas and income analysis.  The results showed that the independent variables (Xi) simultaneously affect the dependent variable of taro production (Y) significantly.  The value of Fcounted was 234.743>Ftable (8.66) with coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.988 indicating that 98.8% of the fluctuation of taro production can be explained by such variables as land area (X1), seed number (X2), labor (X3), education level (X4) and farming experience (X5) while the remaining 1.2% can be explained by other variable not included in the model.  Those variables mentioned above are simultaneously affecting the taro production significantly.  The regression coefficients at the 5% α level of those variables are 0.360, 0.240, 0.248, 0.136, and 0.064, respectively.  The average production of the taro farming system was 4.370 kg/0.43 ha of wet taro equal to 10,162.79 kg/2.35 ha.  The average income of the farming system was IDR 13,124,575/0.43 ha equal to IDR 30,558,290.79/2.35 ha per growing season.  The R/C value was >1 suggesting that the taro farming system is feasible to be developed. Keywords: Japanese taro, Income, and Production Factor

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to analyze strengths, weakness, opportunity and threats faced by cashew agribusiness development; to determine appropriate alternative formulation strategy to develop cashew agribusiness, and to determine prioritized strategy selected for developing cashew agribusiness.  The population of the research was cashew farmers dwelling in Bulagi sub district.  The unit population was purposively determined in Peling Seasa village as it has largest area of cashew plantation as well as largest number of cashew farmers although the plantation productivity is very low.  Respondent samples in this research were 20 people consisting of 18 farmers and 2 field extension officers.  Data were obtained through observations, interviews, and focus group discussion (FGD). The data then was analyzed using SWOT analysis.  The results of the SWOT analysis suggested that the strengths of the cashew agribusiness included (a) agro-ecology, (b) vast land area availability, (c) sufficiently long experience in farming, (d) grow well in marginal land, and (e) sufficient labor availability.  Whereas, opportunity factors were (a) high market demand, (b) forage integration, (c) harvest processing and pseudofruit utilization, (d) government support availability, and (e) increasing pricetrend of dried cashew nut.  The results of SWOT matrix analysis showed that the main strategy implemented is minimizing the weakness factors in order to maximizing the opportunity factors.  Based on the main strategy, activities proposed include: (1) recovering soil fertility through organic fertilizer addition, (2) increasing production through intensification, (3) improving quality and quantity of products through cashew tree rejuvenation and thinning, and (4) enabling the farmers to create various cashew nuts            based products. Keywords: Cashew Nuts, Development Strategy, and Production.

Abstract

Aspergillus niger produces α-amylase and glucoamylase enzymes whichenable starch to be broken down into simple glucose then fermented into ethanol.  The growth of A. niger is directly related to food substances within the medium.  A. nigeralso generatessuch enzymes as amylase, amyloglucosidase, pectinase, cellulose, glycoside that can break down urea into amino acid and CO2.  The research objective was to find A. Niger fungi isolate which potentially has antagonist characters against the growth of P. Palmivora  fungi in cacao fruits. The research was conducted in the Pest and Disease Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture of Tadulako University from September to December 2015.  The research results showed that 20 isolates of A. niger found are potentially utilized as biological control agents of fungal antagonist against P. Palmivora in four villages where cacao are produced i.e. Sidondo, Lalundu, Towiora and Martajaya.  The results of  in-vitro inhibition test suggested that two isolates best in suppressing the growth of P. Palmivora causing cacao fruit rot are Lalundu isolates (rate of inhibition of 63.65%) and Martajaya isolates (rate of inhibition of 63.63%)Key Words: Aspergillus niger, fungi, antagonis, Phytophthora palmivora.

Abstract

The management of wetland rice lands particularly those in Lembah Palu are characterized by intensive tillage, excessive uses of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides as well as lack of organic fertilizer additions.  Therefore, it is necessary to assess the quality of the wetland rice soils of Lembah Palu from the aspects of soil chemical and biological characteristics.  The research aimed at identifying the chemical and biological qualities of the wetland rice soils in Lembah Palu. It was a descriptive-explorative research conducted from May to July 2015.  Soil samples taken were from the wetland rice soil around Lembah Palu i.e. Sidondo, Sidera, Kaleke, Pantoloan, and Wombo.  The soils were analyzed in the Soil Science Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture of Tadulako University.  The soil chemical parameters observed were pH, CEC, C-organic, N-total, P-total and K-total whereas that a biological parameter was the total soil microbes. The soil qualities were assessed using scoring technique based on the parameters determined.  The research results indicated that the soils taken from Sidera, Sidondo and Kaleke have criteria of not healthy whereas those from Pantoloan and Wombo have criteria less healthy. Keywords:  Biological Characteristics, Biological Properties Of The Soil, Soil Chemical,  Soil Chemical Properties, Soil Quality,  And Wetland Rice.
