Abstract

Theory of reasoned action (Ajzen and Fishbein, 1980) and its’ further development, called theory of planned behaviour (Ajzen, 1987), according to Bagozzi dan Warshaw (1990), need to be reviewed in more detail especially on the behavioural aspect. The later theory emphasises more on behaviour of trying (trying to act something, such as trying to purchase or trying to use), instead of the behaviour itself. Trying is perceived as a more appropriate criterion for an individual who intend to try. Position of other variables does not relatively change as shown by those, other than its’ behavioural aspect, in the theory of planned behaviour. Predictive power of the model is estimated to be higher than the previous two models.

Abstract

During the first long term national development the government played the big role to control rice price in the market through the policy of floor and ceiling price. One of the most important reason is that rice has a high contribution to the growth of inflation. In fact the result of this study shows that during 1968 to 1996, the food group (that rice is included) has the lowest contribution to the growth inflation. Among 12 kinds of food in the food group the rice has the lowest contribution to inflation. Consequently, it is needed to improve the farmer welfare by improving rice price, rural industrialization, and erasing market distortion that empically caused the increasing of inflation rate.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper is intended to explain manager responsibility in managing opportunities to choose accounting methods for external reporting, so that the reported earnings information will not mislead investors. Earnings management is a purposeful intervention in the external financial reporting process, with the intent to obtain some private gains (Schipper, 1989, 92). Opportunity to manage earnings as a consequence of our current accounting system can not be eliminated. The problem is earning management can influence investor decisions.

Abstract

Abstract

The article discusses development in accounting theory and research. Accounting theory was developed later than the practice of double entry bookkeeping. In the early part of the accounting theory development, accounting experts developed the normative theory. The development of positive accounting theory came later. Improvement of theory was performed through research in accounting. As was in the development of accounting theory, development in the accounting research was also started in very simple, non-formal investigation apprroach. The use of deductive and inductive approach resulted in the development of descriptive/positive accounting theory. Accounting theory and research was developed in many different areas, using different theories and concepts from different disciplines such as economics, finance, psychology, sociology etc. The use of those broad concepts as background improved the speed of accounting theory development in the later years. Now we could see that accounting theory is used to explain and predict different phenomena based on results of accounting research that employs concepts from many different disciplines.

Abstract

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to explore empowerment perspectives in Indonesian culture. In particular, it explores which components of empowerment are prevalent and the most important in three Indonesian Universities in Yogyakarta. Data from sixty three academic and administrative staff were collected from surveys and interviews. Five components of empowerment frequently cited in the literature were focused on: authority or control, competence, resources, self efficacy and teamwork. Four dimensions of Hofstede, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity-femininity, and collectivism-individualism were used to understand how Indonesian culture influences the practices of empowerment in Indonesian organizations. The results of this study revealed that all components of empowerment are perceived as quite prevalent and amongst the most important for Indonesians. However, the type of job carried out by staff members and their position or level in the organizations influenced the degree of empowerment. It was also interesting to note that some findings contradicted with expectations derived from Hofstede’s four dimensions. Authority was perceived as amongst the most important component despite Indonesia’s high power distance in which power is unequal among team members.

Abstract

The issue raised in this article is the adequacy of US CPAs understanding of the relative seriousness of alpha and beta risks in statistical audit sampling. The objective of this study is to seek empirical evidence on the issue. Empirical data was collected in 1984 using the method of mail survey, with members of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) serving as the target population. The author concluded that CPAs, in general, did not have an adequate understanding of the relative seriousness of alpha and beta risks in statistical audit sampling. The author also concluded that the understanding of the issue differed across various groups of CPAs. Big eight CPAs, in general, had an adequate understanding of the issue, while CPAs of the other groups, in general, did not. Comparisons between the scores of these groups Indicate that 1) big-eight CPAs scored higher than non-big-eight CPAs; 2) academic CPAs scored higher than non-academic CPAs; and 3) contrary to expectation, practitioners in general did not score significantly higher than non-practitioners.

Abstract

This study extends Pratt and Beaulieu (1992) to examine the differences in organizational culture of public companies due to various aspects of organizational culture: size, technology, rank, and various organizational functions. This study uses different concept of culture with the one used by Pratt and Beaulieu (1992). The concept of culture used in this study is the organizational culture developed by Hofstede et al. (1990) in their study on cross-cultural within cross-organizations. This study reveals that size does not relate with organizational culture. This study does not support previous research by Hofstede et al. (1990) and Pratt and Beaulieu (1992).
