Abstract

This thesis aims to know why the main characters of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 do excessive consumption on toys. Therefore, I will use the theory of consumer behavior to be applied on Andy, Sid, and Al as the consumers of toys. From this theory, I want to show that consumer behavior can be seen from internal and external traits. The internal trait means the consumer behavior is influenced by the inner side of consumers. On the other hand, the external trait means the consumer behavior is triggered by the outside factor of consumers? surroundings. I connected the analysis with consumer behavior theory by discussing the factors which have internal and external traits that cause the main characters to have consumer behavior.  In the end, it can be concluded from Toy Story (1995), and Toy Story 2 (1999) that consumer behavior can influence children or adult for doing excessive consumption as the consumers of toys. Keywords: Affective System, Cognitive System, Characteristic, Consumer Behavior, Consumption.

Abstract

This study analyzed the issue of insecurity and self-acceptance portrayed in Samsung Galaxy A8 advertisement entitled ?Lets You Be You?. The main theory for this study is the theory of multimodal discourse analysis by Paltridge (2012) and the theory of body language by Pease (2004) as the supporting theory. Qualitative approach is applied because this study involves the interpretation of both verbal and nonverbal data. The findings showed how the issue of insecurity is reflected through the reaction of the participants in the video before and after receiving a compliment. Furthermore, the construction of the changing process from insecurity to self-acceptance can be seen from the genuine reaction of the compliment, as well as the change of facial expression throughout the video. Key words: Insecurity, Self-acceptance, Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Advertisement, Samsung

Abstract

This study analyzed phonetic errors found in the students of Speaking 2 of the English Department of Petra Christian University. There were sixteen students taking part in this study. The main theories for this study are from Celce-Murcia, Brinton, & Goodwin (2004) on the production of English consonants and Moeliono and Dardjowidjojo (2003) on the production of Indonesian consonants. The method used was qualitative approach. The researcher had the students read four short passages to find out the kinds of phonetic errors and interviewed them to find out what factors that might affect their pronunciation, which contains phonetic errors. The findings revealed fourteen deviation patterns found from the four target consonants observed, mainly caused by the non-existence of the target sounds in students? mother tongue. Additionally, the findings also showed that the learners? attitude towards the language was the most important factor influencing their pronunciation level. Keywords: Phonetic, errors, phonetic errors

Abstract

My novel #nofilter follows Mia, a photo model who is pretty famous on the social media platform Instagram, as she meets Kyle, her online boyfriend for the first time. In an effort to earn other people?s acceptance, Mia has been building a perfect online persona. However, after meeting Kyle, it is revealed that she is not who she portrays herself to be. As my work revolves on how social media affects someone?s self-esteem, hopefully it can help the readers learn to love themselves and do not depend their self-esteem on others. Specifically, I focus on how Mia maintains an idealized online persona in order to cope with her low self-esteem and earn other people?s acceptance, how the contrast between Mia?s online and real life personas causes her relationship with Kyle to crumble, and how Mia learns to love herself by accepting her weaknesses and acknowledging her positive qualities. For that reason, I use Contingencies of Self-esteem theory by Jennifer Crocker and Connie T. Wole, the Social Comparison theory, and the Presentation of Self in Everyday Life by Erving Goffman. Set in the early years after college, I use New Adult genre and the sub-genre Contemporary Romance to explore Kyle and Mia?s romantic relationship. Keywords: Social media, Instagram, self-esteem, online persona, New Adult, Contemporary Romance

Abstract

PT. Essentra is a manufacturer located in Sidoarjo which produces cigarette filters and tear tape for cigarette packaging. The main problem that happened in the company is the ineffective way to introduce and promote company?s product as the marketing team only uses product presentation slide as their tool. While giving product presentation, customers often get bored as it covers lot of explanation and take long time to finish one presentation. Therefore, the solution I offered for the company is to make a marketing booklet. This marketing booklet consists of information regarding the company and explanation of cigarette filter products along with the benefits that customers will have. This solution will help PT. Essentra in promoting its products and fulfill the customers? request related to a tool for them to review the company?s products. By having this marketing booklet, it can help the company to introduce and promote its products and fulfill the customers? request of a tool for reviewing the company?s products which PT. Abstract

My screenplay The Listener is the story of Mike, a guy in his late 20s who loves money and thinks that money can buy happiness. My work?s main idea revolves around loves of money and how it can lead into a bad decision. I used the theory Base of Materialism Theory from Belk and Measurement of Materialism and Money Attitude from Rimple, Srikant, Naseem, and Kumar to construct the personalities of the main character. The purpose of this creative thesis is to increase the awareness that money cannot buy happiness. I used crime as the genre and Heist Flicks as the subgenre because I see a lot of similarities and genre convention with my screenplay?s subject matter of loves of money and money cannot buy someone?s happiness. The story mostly tells about how Mike faces the hardship in making decisions due to his loves of money. Later, he focuses on his prestige by having lots of money. At the end, he realizes that friendship is more important than money. Keywords: The Listener, Love of Money, Prestige, Materialism, Heist Flicks

Abstract

This study was done to find out the types of teacher?s corrective feedback and the errors in sentence structure that had teacher?s feedback on Writing 4A students? first drafts of their four assignments. The writer used theories from Ellis (2009) about written corrective feedback and Ho (2005) about errors in sentence structure. This study was a qualitative study. The source of data was the Writing-4A?s four students? first draft of their four assignments. The findings showed that the teacher used one type of corrective feedback: indirect corrective feedback to both groups with Electronic Feedback as the media for group B, and group B made more errors than group A did. Most of the errors were fragmented sentences, and happened when the students wrote compound sentences. In conclusion, the teacher did not differentiate the students in giving feedback, and B-students had more difficulties in creating compound sentences. Keywords: Feedback, Written Corrective Feedback, Errors in Sentence Structure
