Abstract

During my internship at an apartment equivalent to a three-star hotel, I found that the receptionists, who were mostly graduates from vocational high schools in hospitality major, had difficulty in giving information to foreign guests in English appropriately. As a result, the receptionists made the guests dissatisfied and unable to give a satisfactory service. From this communication problem, I thought that a video guideline on giving information in English would be the best solution for the problem. A guideline in a video will help the receptionists easier to learn about the guideline because they can just easily watch the role plays and listen the conversation. This video guideline which contains the steps and procedures for asking and giving information about check ins, hotel facilities, and check outs in English will help the receptionists to handle foreign guests appropriately and help hotels to maintain their customers by giving satisfactory services to the guests.

Abstract

In this project, I would like to convey the reality of a patriarchal society through fiction and more specifically, fantasy. This project focuses on the lives of the four major characters representing a patriarchal family. It also focuses on the struggles that each of the characters have between following their own passion and the social expectations. The two themes used in this project are individual against society and male gender roles with the hegemonized patriarchal value as the basis. These values became the burden that men have to take in order to be accepted by the society. To portray this reality through fiction, I am using the realistic fantasy, a sub-genre of fantasy, as the genre of the four stories.

Data collection was done by using survey technique in which 100 respondents from each background of study filled in the questionnaires which were handed to them. Theory used in this study is Socio-Educational Model by Gardner (2005). Masquerade is the use of mask and disguise by a person to hide a certain identity and make a new identity. The concept of masquerade that is the use of mask has been used in Japanese theatre such as Kabuki and Takarazuka; however those theatres also use the concept of gender bender. Nowadays, the two concepts are applied in Japanese comic that is popular in teenager. In this study, I would like to analyze the use of mask and gender bender by Makoto and Midori in Japanese comic W-Juliet and Midori is a Tomboy. I would like to reveal the strategy that is used by Makoto and Midori in wearing their mask and the meaning of the masks that they use. Abstract

This paper explains the processes and the result of my final project in a form of screenplay entitled Metamorphosis. The screenplay is a story of a man, Johan Tanuwijaya who transforms from a psychologically sound man to a psychologically disturbed man. To develop my story, I used trauma as one of the themes and the theories. At first, he experienced traumatic childhood, then he recovered until his adulthood and marriage life, where he married his dire attention-seeker wife, Renata. Slowly, he was thrown back to his childhood trauma and that drove him insane. Eventually, he killed his wife and he created another himself in his daughter. From this screenplay I expect that people will have new principles and views about domestic violence and abuse, so that Indonesian society will have improvements in the future

Abstract

This creative project is a novel that is telling the story of a young man named, Rei, in his journey to find the truth about his late parents to help him find who he is, and a young princess called Aria in her quest, accompanied by Rei and their friends, in order to regain her right as the one and only successor to the throne of a Kingdom named Earendel. In this story, I decided to use quest and social criticism as the two main themes, while the sub-themes are quest for identity, quest for power, and for social criticism, it is change versus tradition. This to assist me in realizing my aim for writing this work which is to help raising more awareness towards our surroundings by promoting discovery process in the young adult world and social change. During their journey, the two major characters will see how some people is still having difficulty in accepting a change in their tradition from having men as the heads of the family to having a woman as one. The family here represents the patriarchal tradition or custom that most of families hold. As for the genre, I chose fantasy with the sub-genre epic fantasy and using the common epic fantasy properties, such as magic, supernatural creatures, the quest conducted by the two major characters, and also the existence of the good and the evil one.

Abstract

Many people assume that swearwords is a rude word and should be avoided. Those words are used to insult, to curse, to offend or to mock at something when the speaker has strong emotion (Hughes, 1991,05). To swear at someone or something is to insult and deprecate the object of abuse, as well as to use other kinds of dysphemism (Allan & Burridge, 2006,76). Apparently some experts and scholars have been able to prove that swearwords also has a purpose and a meaning beside the one as commonly held. Therefore, the writer took the "Alpha Dog" movie as an example of the analyzed cases. Examples have been found by the writer including the categories of epithets derived from tabooed bodily organs, epithets derived from bodily effluvia, epithets derived from sexual behaviours, dysphemistic epithets that pick on real physical characteristics that are treated as though they are abnormalities, imprecations and epithets invoking mental subnormality or derangement. Finally, the writer also managed to find a purpose or a reason for the people to use swearwords in real life.
