Abstract

The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of hedging treatment and NPK fertilizer application on shoots production of Alstonia scholaris (L)R.Br. at nursery stage. The experiment was arranged in completely randomized design with two factors. The first factor was the height of hedging, consisted of 3 levels : 20 cm, 30 cm and 40 cm above the ground. The second factor was NPK fertilizer application, consisted of 4 levels : control (0g), 2 g, 4 g and 6 g. The result showed that the height of hedging, dosage of NPK fertilized and their interaction gave significant effect on the new shoots length. The highest shoot length by height of hedging treatment was 23.19 cm (T1) and the treatment of NPK fertilizer dosage was 23.18 cm (P4). The highest shoot length by interaction treatment was 26.87cm (P4T2). The treatment which showed the best average value of all characters was P1T1,  as follows:  number of shoots was 3,75, shoots length was 26,69 cm and number of leaves were 39.

Abstract

Pod production and  hybrid seed yield were observed  in breeding garden of Acacia mangium x Acacia auriculiformis. The breeding garden was established in 2006 using 6 selected plus trees from first-generation progeny test of A. mangium and 12 selected plus trees from first-generation progeny test of A. auriculiformis.  Based on synchronisation in first phase flowering time (one year of age), there were 6 crossing combinations between A. mangium x A. auriculiformis. Twenty three (23) crosses were done with A. mangium as mother tree. Crosses were practiced by using about 2 spikes for each cross. In the first phase of flowering time, pod production and hybrid seed yield was still low with about 1.87 pod per spike and 2.05 good seeds per pod. This low production is probably due to the low intensity of flowering and lack of male flower in this first phase flowering. In addition, high incompatibility between pistil and pollen among the two different species also affected quality of seed in which about 1.54 seed per pod or 28,75% are poor hybrid seeds. Verification using seedling morphology indicated that almost all collected seed were hybrid seed. This finding showed that anther method without emasculation seemed to be effective to produce hybrid seed of A. mangium x A. auricuiliformis.

Abstract

Observation on of flowering and fruiting phenology  were undertaken at M. cajuputi subsp. Cajuputi seedling seed orchard Paliyan, Gunungkidul from February to October 2002. Seed viability was tested out at Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research Institute, Yogyakarta. The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the flowering time, (2) to determine the time of buds development and (3) to observe the reproductive success and the number of germination seeds per capsule of open pollination seeds. The study showed that peak flowering of M. cajuputi subsp cajuputi at Paliyan seedling seed orchard occurred in March; several trees at this population also flowered during February to June. The buds initiation to capsules maturity took on average of 277 days. Three months after fertilisation, the capsules were ready to harvest. Mean number of reproductive success of open pollination seeds is 3.6%. The mean number of seed viability varied between provenance range from 6 to 32 seeds/capsule.

Abstract

The breeding program of Melaleuca cajuputi subsp. cajuputi in Indonesia  was started  in 1994 by the Institute for Biotechnology and Forest Tree Improvement in cooperation  with CSIRO-Australia. An assessment  of progeny test of M. cajuputi at Paliyan at  23 months and at Sukun-Ponorogo at 36 months old were conducted to ascertain the  patterns of genetic variation in growth and foliar oil   and to  estimate genetic parameters in growth and foliar oil .  Based on the evaluation, genetic variation on growth and oil yield were high. Genetic gain estimation for growth and oil yield were 11.83 to 20.38 % in the progeny test seedling seed orchard of M. Cajuputi at Sukun, Ponorogo.

Abstract

Gall rust disease infected Falcataria moluccana plantations, in several locations in East and Central Java. Effort to eradicate the disease using fungicidal treatment not effective at operational scale. One of the techniques to solve the problem is to develop rust resistant genotypes by selecting tolerant individuals in the field. Kediri is the area where the gall rust disease was found with high level invasion therefore the selection was conducted. The research area is a provenance and progeny trial which was established using 6 replications or blocks, each block contained 77 families, (37 families are collected from Candiroto, 20 from Kediri, 15 from Lombok and 5 from Papua). Result from the data analysis found that individuals from several provenances of Waga-waga, Kuaulu; Muai, Wamena; Hubikosi; Muliama Bawah, Asologoima of Papua, Irian Jaya appeared to be more tolerant to the gall rust diseases than others.
