Abstract

A  study  on  the  forest  road  element   conditions   in relation  to soil  erosion  potentials   was carried out  at two  logging companies   in Buntok   area,   Central  Kalimantan   in  1988.  Road   elements   measured   in  the  field  are those  related  to  the Universal Soil  Loss  Equation   factors  such  as road openings,  surfaces,  slopes,  ditches,  culverts,  cuts,  fills, diversion  ditches, and the incidence  of  vegetation.The  results  showed   that  forest   road  elements   are in  the  condition   of  high potentials   for  accelerating  soil  erosion.Factors  that  caused  this problem,   as identified   in the field,  are:  long and steep  slopes,  wide ground  openings,  and  bare soil surfaces,  in addition   to  the  originally  sensitive  to  erosion  soil  type,  and  hot  and  wet  weather.Qualitatively,   it is realized  that soil erosion  is quite  serious.  Therefore,  further  study  is necessary  in order  to find  the quantitative   amount   of  soil erosion  occured  in  the  area.

Abstract

Machining  properties   of  16  wood  species  from   West Kalimantan   and  West Java has been  identified   using the  modified  ASTM   D-1666  which  was described  in the  Forest  Products   Research  Institute  Report   No.  160  (1982).   The  samples (25 pieces/species)    were dried  to  equilibrium   moisture   content   condition   (15  to  18% of MC).  The  machining  properties tested  are planing,  shaping,   boring,  turning  and  sanding.Seven  species  that  have  good   to  very  good  machining  properties   are  kenari  I, kenari II,  kemayau,   belangeran,  ki sampang,  ki  endog  and  surian  bawang.   The  best  machining properties,   however,   were  found   on johar,  gadog and putat. Whereas the  other  species  are good  or  very good  in some  properties   and  fair or  even poor  in others,

Abstract

The  result  of  a  study   on  the  susceptibility    of  rattan  to  fungal  attack.   Three  rattan  species  i.e.   irit (Calamus  trachy- coleus  Becc.),   manau  (C.  manan  Miq.)  and  semambu   (C. scipionum Lour.)   both peeled  and  unpeeled  were kept  out  door. Fungal  infestation   was than  observed  after  one,  two,   four  and  eight  week  periods.  At  the end of experiment,   each rattan sample  was split  into  two  halves to observe  internal  discoloration.   The result showes  that  irit was most  susceptible   to stain attack   and  infestation   on peeled  cane seems  to  be more  severe  compared   with  unpeeled  ones.  The  average rate of  infes- tation  of  the  rattan  species  studied was  10.59   % (4.65  -   14,92  %) per  week.   The  lowest  and  highest  rate of  infestation were shown  respectively   by  unpeeled  manau and peeled  irit rattan.  It was also revealed  that  93.33  % of  the  test speciments were  internally  stained,   of  which  46.67  % were badly stained.  Semambu  rattan seems  to  beresistant  to fungal  infestation, most  of  which showing  low degree  of  internal stain.

Abstract

Impregnation    under  pressure  is  the  most  effective  way  of  applying  preservative   to  timbers,   but  not  all species can be treated  effectively  using  the  method.   Air-dried  timbers  of  5 cm  x  5 cm x  100 cm in dimension   were impregnated   with preservative   used  for  constructional   purposes.   Part of  wood  samples  was presteamed.   Prior to  the preservative   treatment both  groups  were reconditioned    to  the same  moisture  content   as the  reference   material  (air dried).Retention  and  penetration   figures  have  increased as presteaming   was applied.   The  result revealed  that  two  timbers preserved   met   the  standard   requirement.    The  preservation   schedule  proposed   for  the  timbers  is presented   in this paper.

Abstract

Experimental    laminated   box  beam  were  constructed    for  their  mechanical  properties  test.  The pile  component  of box  beam  was prepared  consisting  of  solid  wood   as upperside  and  downside   flange  and plywood  or particleboard   as left and  right   web.   The  dimension   of  box  beam  is  9.1  cm  x  20 cm x 244  cm where  the dimension   of solid wood are 5.5 cm x3.5   cm  x 244  cm  and the dimensions   of plywood  and particleboard   are 1.8 cm  x 20 cm x 244  cm. All components   were  onnected   by glue,  nail and  combination    of  both.  The  strength   of  box  beam is based on the static  bending  test especially its  modulus  of elasticity  (MOE) and  modulus  of rupture  (MOR)  by Baldwin  universal testing  machine  with ASTM  method.The results  show  that  the  experimental     box  beam produced   had adequate  MOE and MOR  for construction   purpose. The  nail   and  nail-glue   combination    to  connect  plywood  and particleboard   components    with  solid  wood  give  high  value of  MOE and  MOR  of  box  beam.

Abstract

Three  methode for  tapping pine tree resin.  i.e.,   3 x 4  cm,  1,5 x8 cm and Indian  tapping  method   were investigated  in Cianjur Forest  District  in  1988.   To  increase  the  resin yield,  sulphuric  acid  (H2S04)   with  0%, 15  %, 25 %, and 35 % con- cetratation   were  used.  Each  tapping  method   was applied  on  fourty   pine  trees.  The  results  are as fallows  :1.Using stimulant   with  the  three  methods   of  tapping  increase  the  resin yield.               2.From   the.  three   tapping   methods   applied,   Indian   tapping  method   showed   the  highest  resin  yield,    i.e.   12. 72 gram/tree/day.3.Indian   tapping   method   gives  Rp  5/kg  profit.   This  value  was found   by  subtracting   selling  price  (Rp,   150/kg)   with production  cost  (Rp.   145/kg).

Abstract

The  anthraquinone   soda pulping   trials have  been  conducted   by  using Acacia  mangium   Willd. and Agathis  dammara Rich  woods  to  investigate  the  effect   of  anthraquinone   and  its optimum  usage on  the pulp  properties.   The pulping  trials have   been   conducted    individually    in a.    rotary  digester   using  soda  process,   with   16% of  active  alkali,  wood   to  liquor ratio  1    :   4,  maximum    temperature   170°C   and  keeping   the  maximum   temperature   for  two  hours   The  anthraquinone catalyst  was given in five  levels, namely  0.00,  0.05,  0.10,  0.15 and 0.20% of  the  weight  of oven  dry basis wood.The  result  of  the  investigation   showed   that  the  variation  in anthraquinone    used had a significant  effect on the pulp yield,   tear  strength, tear index, stretch  and permanganate   number   of  the pulp  from  Acacia  mangium  wood.   By  adding the same  catalyst  in the pulping   trials of  Agathis dammara  wood  it was found  that such  treatment   had a significant  effect on   the  pulp   yield,    tear  strength,    tear  index,   tensile  strength,    tensile  index,   breaking  length,  folding   endurance,    and bursting  strength.It  was found   that  the addition   of  anthraquinone catalyst   tended  to  increase  of  the pulp  yield  of  Acacia  mangium and   Agathis   dammara,  and  to  decrease  the  permanganate    number   of   the  pulp   of  Acacia  mangium.   In  general,   the addition   of  anthraquinone   catalyst  is increasing  the physical  properties   of  both   wood  species,  but  decreasing the bursting strength   of  the  Agathis  dammara  putp.Compared   to  the classification   of  hardwoods.  from   tropical   forest   according   to  Misra,  based  on  the  pulp   yield, alkali  consumption,    permanganate    number,   and  stretch,    the  Acacia  mangium   pulp   could  be  categorized   as   the  first quality   class,  based  on  the  breaking  length  as the second  quality   class, and  based on  the folding  endurance   it could  be categorized  as the  third  or fourth   quality  class. The optimum  cooking  condition   of Acaciamangium  was obtained  by add- ing of  0.05%  of  anthraquinone   catalyst. The  optimum  cooking   condition   of  Agathis  dammara   was obtained   with  0.10%   anthraquinone   catalyst.  Based  on the  Indonesia  Industrial  Standard   (Sll.08030-83),   at  this  level.  the  resulting pulp  can subsitute   the  unbleached  sulphate pulp  from  conifer wood.
