Abstract

This  work  investigates   the  use of  macadamia  (Macadamia hildebrandii   Steen)  fruit.   The samples  were obtained  from Forest  District  of  Simalungun,   North  Sumatera  province  of Indonesia.  The nut samples  were allowed  to stand  for a period of  zero   week  as control,   the  others  were  kept  for  4 and  8  weeks.   The  macadamia   kernels  were also stored  for  4 and  8 weeks.  The  analyses  comprised   of  the  determination    of  moisture.    ash,   fat  and protein   contents.The  study   reveals  that  the  moisture   content   varies from   17. 7 -   24.6   percent,   ash  from  2. 7 -  2.9 percent,  fat from0.9  -   2.0  percent,   and  protein   from  6.3  -   8.4  percent.    Themoisture,    fat, and protein   contents   were  effected  by  fruit condition  and  storage  time,   while ash contents   not  influenced.   The  macadamia  kernels   stored  for  8 weeks  have smaller moisture   content.   Fat  content   of  macadamia  nuts  decreased   at stored   for  4 and 8 weeks,and protein  content   of macada-mia nuts  and kernels  decreased  at stored  for

Abstract

At   present, pine   needles  have  no  commercial   value.   The  needles  are fire  hazard  to  both  natural  and  plantation grown   trees  when   they  accumulate   on  the  ground,  couple   with  inhibition of  the growth  of  the surrounding   trees.  The research purpose   is to  determine   chemical  component    of pine   needles  of  three  pine  i.e  Pinus  merkusii, P. caribaea, and P. insularis.  This  endeavor  is conducted  to explore  a  wider   of  such  material.The  results  indicated   that  the  moisture   content    of  P. merkusii,   P.  caribaea,   and P.  insularis  needles  were 4.69  %,3.54   %,   and   14.79  %  respectively;   cellulose   content    being   12.31      %,  17.19     %,   and  18.54    %;   lignin  content   29.46%,39.54,   and  26.65   %;  pentosan  content    7.04  %,   5. 78  %,   and   12.11    %;   ash  content   3.06  %,  2.40    %,   and  7.30  %; silica content   0.44  %,  0.48  %,  and 0.19 %; acidity  5.32,  5.33,  and 6.15;   solubility   in cold water 23.38   %, 23.09  %,  and 17.84  %; solubility  in  hot  water  26.51   %,   29.62   %,    and  17.82  %;   solubility   in  alcohol-benzene     (1  :    2)   19.30  %,   19.14  %,  and 11.08  %.  Based  on  this component,  the pine  needles  may  be utilized  as sources  of raw materail for production of glucose, fructose,  ethanol,   ethylene,   pine  needle  oil  for  pharmaceutical   and  perfumery  industries,   etc.  The  needles  can also be used as raw material  for gasification  and anaerobic  fermentation  processes  for  energy  production.

Abstract

Minimum   level   of  stand  damages  is one  of  the  obyectives   of  the  tropical  rain  forest  harvesting  practices  in which the  Indonesian   Selective   Cutting  system   is applied.  In order  to  meet  that  obyective,   various manuals  should   be prepared based on sound  quantitative  data.Observation    on stand  damages  due  to felling  operations  has been  carried out  in Suka Jaya  Makmur  Enterprise  (SJM) and  Kawedar  Mukti   Timber   Enterprise   (KMT),   both   located   in  West Kalimantan.   The  stand  damages  caused  by  felling one  tree  vary  from   3  to  8  trees with   an average  of  6 trees  in SJM,  and  from  2  to  7  trees  with   an average of  4  trees  in KMT.  The  relationships    between   stand  damage  (Y)  and  stand  density   (X)  are: Y = -4,69   + 0,08   X for SJM and  Y = -6,83+ 0,08 X for KMT.The  results  of  the  study  showed   that  the  major  causes of  the  variation  of  stand  damages  are  improper  direction  of tree felling,   and  less control  from  supervisors/managers.

Abstract

The  distribution    of  initial  tunnel  of  ambroisa  beetle  infestations   on debarked   rubber  logs was studied.    The  surface. of  the  test  logs  was plotted   into  8 equal   beds,   including   two  single  beds situated  on  the  top  and bottom,  and three pair- ed  others  situated   on  the  upper  sides,   sides,  and  under  sides. Intensity  of  the  beetle  tunnels  on  each bed  was observed  four  times  at  the  day  of  11,  13,   17, and  21 after  the  debarking.It  was shown   that  the  ambrosia   beetle  tunnels   were  not  equally  scattered   on  the  entire  parts  of  the  log  surface.The  two  paired  plots,   sides  and   upper  sides,  were  most  susceptible   ones  eventhough   the  intensity    of the  tunnels  vari- ed  during  the  observation   periods.    The   lower  susceptible   plots   were  respectively   recorded  on  the  top,  under  sides and bottom   part  of  the  logs.

Abstract

Precently  non-oil   export   development     is  very   important    for  Indonesias   economy.    This  study   is  to  analize, Indonesias   plywood   export   development,   in particular   to  Japan,  and  to  discuss  some  factors   which  are supposed   to influence   it.In  line with  the  fast growth  of plywood  industry   in Indonesia  there  is diversification   of  export   markets.  Plywood export   to Japan  goes  on  to increase, and  now  80%  of  the Japans  total plywood  import  come  from  Indonesia.The  result   of  this study  shows  that market  potential of Indonesias  plywood  to Japan large enough,  especially  if it is perceived   from  the number  of population   of age 15 years and  up  (Xl),   where  the regression  coefficient   has shown   that each increase of  1000   people   in the population  of age 15 years and up would  increase the Indnoesia s plywood  export  for around  50 m3.  But  there is some  c;on~traints which suppress  the market  potential,   among  other  things are Japans plywood production,    consumers  preference   and governments   protective  policy.   The  market  share of Indonesias   to Japan  can be increased  if  the  constraints   are relaxed.

Abstract

Transportation cost in logs distribution by Forest District Administration (KPH) for sawmilling industry are an important component influencing on the structure of whole production cost. In determining the distribution pattern. of logs as raw material for sawmills of Perum. Perhutani, in particular Perum Perhutani unit One, Central Java, more attention should be paid on the efficiency aspect. The aim of this investigation is to determine the optimal allocation of logs for sawmills so as to minimize the total transportation cost. The technique used is linear programming. The result of the investigation is :The Average raw material demand of Cepu sawmill is 3407 cu.m. per year. It rs supplied by 3 forest district administrations (KPH), while Brumbung sawmill (16973 cu.m. per year) is supplied by 8 forest district administrations.The total cost of transporting the raw material is Rp 177.997.530,- or 91,11% of transporting cost of current distribution scheme.

Abstract

A  study   result on  the  suitability  of  wood  species  from  Irian Jaya as raw material for veneer and plywood  is reported  in this paper.  This  study   consisted  log  peeling  characteristic,  veneer  property,  some physical  and mechanical properties of  plywood   (triplex  and multiplex).All  of  the  logs from  6 wood  species  could  be peeled  in cold  condition, producing 1.5   mm veneer at a cutting  angle between   920-92°30-The  average shrinkage  of  veneer  is  7.99%,    with  a  minimum of  6. 74% (sehiega) and  maximum   of  9. 71 %  (petuon).  Veneer  swelling from oven-dry  to air-dry  condition varied between   2. 68% (katulampa)  and 4.01 % (petuon)  with  an   average  of 3.19%.The  bonding  strength  of plywood   for  type  11  from  6 wood  species  (100%)  conforms  with  the Indonesian  Standard6 wood species  (100%)  with Japanese Standard  and 6 species  (100%)  with German Standard.The specific  gravity  of   multiplex    is  higher  than  triplex.  Some  mechanical  properties of  multiplex are higher  than triplex

Abstract

Lignocellulosic     wastes  such  as  rubber  wood  saw  dust,   bagasse,   cayuput   oil  waste,  municipal  solid  waste,   vegetable waste  were  digested   by  solid  state  fermentation    at Thermophillic   temperature    (55°C),  and dry  matter  condition   of 20-40Percent  in 25 liter anaerobic   fermentors.All  of  the  lignocellulosic   wastes,   except  for cayuput   oil waste  can be digested.   The  result  revealed  that  the  biogas productivity   is about   1.6­6.5   V/V.r.d,   methane   content   about  48.8­53.3    percent,   retention   time  about   13­34    days and efficiency   of  conversion  about   12-61 percent.Solid  state   fermentation    at  the  above  mentioned    conditions   increases  the  biogas productivity     of  about  2-6   times more  than  that  of  the  conventional    method.Solid  state  fermentation   of  a mixture  of  rubber  wood  saw dust and water hyacinth   (ratio  90/10) revealed that  bioga» productivity   was the  lowest,   retention  time  appeared  to be the longest and the efficiency of  conversion  was relatively  low (15%),,    On the  other  hand,  solid  state   fermentation    of  fresh  municipal  solid  waste gave  the  highest  productivity    of about 6.5 V/V,r,d,  relatively short retention  time  (16.6  days) and high efficiency  of about  57%.  Solid  state  fermentation   of  mixture of  rice straw and  water hyacinth   (95/5)  and  also of  the municipal  solid waste,  rubber  wood  saw dust,  bagasse and water hya- cinth  (68/ 15/ 1214) gave   a high productivity    and  efficiency.
