Abstract

This paper  deals with  a study  on a momentary  dipping  of freshly  sawn wood  for short periods  in a solution  of  33% boric  acid equivalent (BAE)  and  33% BFCA  preservative  at ambient   temperature,   followed by  one,  two,  three  and  four weeks  of  diffusion storage.  Boron  penetration were  then  calculated  and analyzed.  Results  of the study  reveal that  timber species  and  preservatives   do  not  any  significant   effect,   but  diffusion periods   show  highly  significant   effect to  boron penetration.   Boron  penetration   seemed  is normally   with  the  increas in diffusion storage period. Diffusion  storage of four weeks  for  all timber   tested  in  this  experiment  shows  relatively  good  results, so that  diffusion storage periods  for  four weeks  may  be recommended.

Abstract

 An investigation   on   working   conditions   of  three  plywood  factories  in  South   Sumatra   was conducted in 1987; The  objective is to find  out  the  workers judgement   about   their  working  conditions in  terms  of  conveniences.The   total  of  265   respondents   from  plywood  factories employed  in  the  processing  steps  of  wood  preparation, peeling,  reeling, unreeling, veneer  drying, veneer  preparation,   gluing,  pressing, finishing, quality  control, packaging, workshops and laboratories were interviewed.The  results showed that  in  each processing  step, more  than  60%  respondents  felt their  working space conditions were  far  from being convenient   due  to  inappropriate   air circulation, dust, bad  smell noise, and  vibration.

Abstract

Eight  wood  species from  forest  experimental   garden in West Java were observed  for identification purposes.  All  wood species  could  be  identified one  from  the  others,  due  to  their  distinguished   conspicuous   characters. Kecapi  (Sandoricum kucape   Merr.)  on  the  other  hand,   showed   characters  that  matched   only   the  previous   description   of  the  genus.  Such characters,  were apparently not  sufficed to describe  the species.

Abstract

Condensed-tannin from bark of  Pinus merkusii  Jungh  et de  Vriese,  can react  with  formaldehyde in alkali or acid condition  to form  tannin-formaldehyde. The  reaction  product is assumed  to be an excellent  sizing  material for fiberboard manufactures. The  purpose   of  this  research  is  to  study   the  effect   of  tannin-formaldehyde  sizing  on  moisture  content, density,     thickness, water absorption, thickness swelling, and tensile strength parallel to surface of  fiber board properties. The amount  of  tannin-formaldehyde added  to pulp  consisting  of 0,3,6, 9 and  1.2 percent based on  oven dry  pulp.    Results indicate  that  the  addition of  tannin-formaldehyde during  the  fiberboard  making  process  has a highly significant  effect on  reducing water absorption and  thickness swelling.   Similarly, the tensile strength  parallel to surface  of fiberboard was  significantly  improved by  adding  tannin-formaldehyde.  Overall  improvement  of  fiberboard  properties  could  be achieved  by adding 12 percent of  the sizing  agent to the  stock.

Abstract

This  article  describes   the  experiment  of  sugar and  alcohol  contents from 3  wood  species,  i.e. jelutung (Dyera costulata, Hook. F), keruing (Dipterocarpus  appendiculatus, Sheff) and  durian  (Durio excelsus, Bakb) by using hydrolysis and  fermentation process. Treatment condition for  hydrolysis  were at 3 levels of sulfuric acid concentration which were 1%, 2%, and 3%  respectively. The fermentation methods agent for producing alcohol  from  sugar of wood  hydrolysis  was the yeast  of  bread containing  Saccharomyces cereviceae.The  result  of this experiment indicated  that  the yield  of sugar ranges from  9.71 % -   11.89% with average of 1,06%. This average yield  of  sugar falls in  the  range of  the  sugar yield  obtained from other researches which have  range from 11-18%.                                                                                                                                                                                                    The  average alcohol  yield  obtained  from  sugar fermentation  was 2.62%. This yield  was lower compared  with other experiment   producing   alcohol  from  wood  abroad, i.e. 8 -   15%. The  result  showed  that  the yield  of sugar is not affected by  the  wood  species  and  low  concentration  of  sulfuric acid  treatment.

Abstract

The  degree  of  protection  offerd   by a wood  preservative  depends  upon  the  quality  of preservative retained by the timber, the depth penetration, and  the permanence of  preservative   in  the wood.On  the hot and  cold  bath process,  the  timber is immersed in cold preservative  and  the  bath and timber are heated up together to around 70°C for one, two, three hours until  the timber  is hot  throught,  and  the whole  then allowed to cool down for 24  hours.For  all  timber species tested   in  this  experiment   the  depth   of  penetration  and  retention    of  preservative  was measured  after  treatment.  The  result  of  which  can be seen in Table 1.  After  calculated  and analysis (Table 2 and Table  3) the following conclusions  could  be draw :Timber species  has highly  significant  on  boron penetration  and retention.  Boron penetration   a seemed  to  be generally getting  deeper  with  increased   hot  soaking  hours; but one hour  is fully.Generally  speaking, hot  and cold  bath process  are  to  be preferred  although   with  mahoni  (Swietenia  mahogani  Jack:) and  tanjung  (Mimmusops  elengi   L.)  timbers  the preservative   retention less than  the  other  timbers.

Abstract

An investigation  or  the  effect  of  skidding   to  residual  stand  damage  on  several  slope  degrees  has  been  done  at PT Sumpol Timber  in South  Kalimantan in 1987.  The purpose  of  this investigation  is to seek  information   on the residual stand  damage  caused  by  skidding   on  several slope  degrees.  The  investigation   took  place  in three  different  slope  degrees: i.e.:  0  -  20  %, 20 - 40  %, and > 40%.  Sample  plots  were selected with  completely randomized   design.Results  of  this investigation  are concluded  as follows   :Skidding has caused part  of  the  residual stand  to damage.The  residual  stand  damage  caused  by  skidding   ranges from 10  Trees/ha to 70 trees/ha  (from 6 % to 29  %)  with an average of 30  trees/ha  (15%) with  standard  error of  3,60   trees/ha. The  residual stand  damage caused   by skidding  on  :             a. 0 - 20 % slope  ranges from 10  trees/ha  to 50  trees/ha (6 – 18%) with an average of 23,3  trees/ha  (11 %).             b. 20 - 40  % slope  ranges  from  10  trees/ha  to  70 trees/ha  with  an average of  30  trees/ha  (15 %).              c.Greater  than 40  %  slope  ranges from  20  trees/ha  to  70 trees/ha   (from 10 % to 29 %) with an average of 38 trees/ha (19 %).The  result  of  Least  Significant   Difference   (LSD) test  on  the  data  revealed  that  the residual stand  damage  between 0 - 20% and > 40%  slope  differs  significantly at 95% level.    The higher the slope degree the greater the residual stand damage took  place.It  is therefore  sugessted  that  skidding  on 40  % slope  degree  or more  be done  with  great  care in order  to decrease  the residual stand  damage
