First, the linguistic elements of language errors in outdoor media are related to the use of punctuations, especially a period (.), writing the preposition of “di”, the use of the word “pukul” and “jam”, and abbreviations. Secondly, the type of improper use of foreign terms is dominated by the use of the English and the Javanese. Both languages are used simultaneously on any word or Indonesian phrase. Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of conversational implicatures(Grice, 1975) in print advertising. It analyses 10 advertisements taken from men and women English and Indonesian Magazines issued in 2016 and 2017. Since advertising is a form of communication between the few (advertisers or company) and the many (public), adverts are supposed to follow the Cooperative Principle and its maxims. However, advertisement designers often do not obey the maxims blatantly or flout the maxims which give rise to an implicature in order to achieve a certain communicative effect. I argue that the application of conversational implicatures in advertisements tends to provide enormous benefits for advertisers or company. The application can perform various functions which eventually make the adverts more effective and persuasive. It could make the adverts more economical or cost-effective, make the ad easy to be remembered, arouse the audience’s curiosity, attract and retain attention and make the advertisers able to avoid responsibility to defend the implied claims. Keywords: Conversational implicature, advertising, cooperative principle, flouting maxims

Abstract

Motivation to learn is very complicated to be examined because it involves various aspects, including the psychology of learners. However, efforts to improve the motivation of learners is not impossible for every teacher. As one of these efforts, the researcher undertook a comparative study by examining the achievement of bunpou understanding in the class that used the quiz tests and did not use the quiz test. After that, we compared with the average of semester final exam grade of the two classes. The quiz tests were formatively conducted after mid term exam until semester final exam. The result of a class that uses a quiz test has a higher average grade than a class that does not use. The mid term exam is difficult than final exam, it causes the average of the grade of student went down. However, the class that does not use the quiz test has drop two fold than the class that used the quiz test. It can be assumed that the quiz test is one of the media that has a role to increase the extrinsic motivation of the basic learner in understanding bunpou. Keywords: learning motivation, quiz tests, roles, bunpou

Abstract

This research aims to describe the semantic components of the metaphorical expressions found in the law discourse of the Jawa Pos daily newspaper by contrasting  the semantic components of the source domain (the literal expressions) and the target domain (the metaphorical expressions) to discover the similarities of meanings of, and to reveal the functions of the metaphorical expressions used in the discourse. The data were collected using non-participatory observation, critical reading, and note-taking. The data were analyzed using referential identity and distributional methods with substitution and paraphrasing techniques. The result of the research reveals two main findings. First, the association of the source and the target domains can be elaborated by analyzing the diagnostic components of each domain. The analysis uncovers four similarities of meanings: in action, qualities, movement, and attributes. Secondly, the metaphorical expressions in this discourse are mainly used for popularizing or dramatizing the issue to draw the readers’ attention to increase the sale of the newspaper, and to criticize and denigrate the law executers (prosecutors and judges) to be more objective in doing their jobs so that law enforcement in Indonesia will be more powerful. Keywords : metaphorical expressions, semantic components, source, target, meanings, functions

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of women in Indonesia humors that appear through the application of whatsapp conversation. This analysis is based on the opinion of Crawford (2003) and Sen (2012) about gender relations, linguistics, and humors. The focus of the study is the use of indeksial meaning and polysemy in constructing a humorous story in women. After the analysis, it was found that humors developing in the application media of whatsapp conversation tended to perpetuate sexist patriarchal values such as portraying women as a highly compliant and passive. In terms of the structure, most of the humors used several techniques of misalignment to cause the value of humor in the readers mind. Most of the female figures appeared to be in the private or domestic space. In addition, the data show that most of the humors used figurative polysemy, especially in describing sexual activities. In this case, the women were always associated with inanimate objects, such as in describing sexual activities or woman genitals. The indeksial meanings of the language used were always based on the paradigm and the interests of men that are in line with patriarchal values. This eventually led to symbolic violence on women. Keywords: humors, polysemy, symbolic violence, women
