Abstract

Mass media have four social functions. They are surveillance, correlation, socialization (transmission of values), and entertainment (Lasswell & Wright in Dominick, 2005). A good mass media product is supposed to fulfill all those functions. So is the television program. A good television program must include four social functions of the mass media in balance. This article will highlight the religious program on Indonesian television that has been growing recently. Several religious programs on 11 television stations (state and private stations) have been observed and results that the religious programs, whether in a talk show or soap opera format, accentuate entertainment function more in comparison with other functions.

Abstract

Journalism has its own problems: declining of revenue from circulations and advertisement; lacking of reading-less audience and authority. Most media institutions seek a new strategy to keep up their business, including convergence their products, institutions, and use the communication technology to serve their audience. Unfortunately, convergence in online news is not enough to solve the problems. Media routines, multimedia skill, and other technical barriers in news productions are more problematic rather than to bring up the news on the net. This research focuses on the media frames on online news, or in other word, how online news being constructed and influenced by culture of production from the media itself. Three online media were analyzed using Teun Van Dijks framing model and confronted with contextualized journalism as primary element of online journalism.

Abstract

Media play an important role in political life. In agenda setting theory, what is considered important by the media will be important as well for the audience (public). This includes how the media show the reality will influence the way public perceive it. In the corruption issue context in Indonesia, this research found that corruption is considered as an important agenda in the media. It can be seen through the placement of news in the headlines, column length, and paragraphs. Then, most of it was also delivered in an unfavorable way which influences publics perception. Thus, the image of the government continues to decline, especially in law enforcement and the handling of corruption cases.

Abstract

Discourse of Yogyakarta’s privilege status once was dimmed from public memory. But then it return and people start to re-debate in the political uproar that included grass-roots level, after the President snap it. Discursive battle about this issue does not only appear in mainstream mass media stage, but also in outdoor media. This article tries to reveal the discourse of Yogyakartas privilege status that is represented in outdoor media, as well as to open up the power-relations behind the production of the discourse.

Abstract

Pangkur Jenggleng is a kind of Macapat, traditional song of Java. It was packaged as a cultural art program in RRI Nusantara II Yogyakarta in the era of 1960S-1970S. Then, it was repackaged by TVRI Yogyakarta and sponsored by Amien Rais Information Center using stage comedy format in 2003. The changing of media format from audio to audiovisual -with any adjustment- make a shift in the value of the meaning of Pangkur Jenggleng. Accentuation of humor in Pangkur Jenggleng TVRI changes cultural value from traditional to mass culture. This phenomenon is not only seen as a media format adjustment, but also as a form of commodification. The research attempts to seek form, process, ideology, and power behind the commodification of Pangkur Jenggleng.

Abstract

Ethics in the concept of Al-Mawardi lay as a foundation of fundamental human piety. It also touches an important aspect of life. Within the scope of communication, ethics, according to Al Mawardi, is an effort to clean up human behavior from loss and abuse. When mapped in contemporary science, thought of Al-Mawardi was not fully representative of modernism or postmodernism. However, its not a final concept if its read with hermeneutics methods, which refer to Paul Ricouers model. This article will find how the concept of ethics is explained in the book and the way to read the concept of ethics in science communication.

Abstract

The television through religious program wanted to show that religion doctrine could be packed as entertaining program. Then, it came to us as an easy, simple, and brief lesson. But in practice, it made Moslems became individualistic. They concerned only in individual piety, without thinking and trying more to solve complex social problem. This study focused in how the textual tendency of spiritual hedonism discourse is was shown in the text of the religious program “Islam Itu Indah” in TransTV. Results showed that the passion of religiousness in a modern people that practice hedonism and materialism as a life style was increasing. Besides, commercialization of religion then came in the form of spiritual hedonism—a spiritual practice that aimed to be enjoyed and not to be taken seriously. Religion was shown in a stage of popular culture only just as the symbolic of piety.
