Abstract

The relationships between Islam and the West have become an important issue in the nternational world until today. Islam and Muslim countries are part of the factors which influenced the political dynamics in the world. In this regard, the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 is one of the major issues that contributed to the shaping the relationship between Islam and the West, even until to date. This is because this revolution has inspired the emergence Islamic movements around the world and triggered anti American sentiment among Muslims. This revolution also shaped the perception about the threat from Islamic fundamentalism in the West. This article will analyze the background and the context of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and its impacts on the United States, the Soviet Union, and the Arab states. It will argue that the Islamic Revolution become the major threat for all the countries because Iran has placed its revolution as the asset that would be exported to other countries. This revolution has challenged Western interests in the Middle East particularly on oil and natural gas supplies. The Islamic revolution also threatened the authoritarian regimes in the Middle East which often oppressed their people in the name of Islamic legitimacy. Abstract

This paper explores the shift in the da’wah concept taking place in the coastal area of Java by examining two manuscripts written by two notable figures in the 19th and 20th centuries, Kiai Saleh Darat from Semarang and Kiai Bisri Musthofa from Rembang. These two Islamic scholars are prolific writers and have penned a number of works in Arab- Pegon. Their writings have become references for Islamic students (santri) studying in traditional educational institutions in coastal areas of Java over decades. This paper attempts to answer the following questions: how the dakwah concept is conceived in the Kyai Saleh Darat’s and Kiai Bisri Musthfa’s works? How do their strategies in dakwah and the implementation shari’a influence the views of Islamic students and scholars in the coastal areas of Java? Why do we have to see coastal areas of Java as an instrument? From the narratives of Islamic historiography in Southeast Asia, coastal area of Java has an important position because it has become a node of the Islamic scholar networks. By utilizing the genealogical concept, this paper traces the roots and intellectual origin of the Javanese Islamic scholarship. Keywords: Java coastal areas, discourse production, da’wah, Islamic scholars, kiai Saleh Darat, kiai Bisri Musthofa.

Abstract

The relationship between Islam, or Muslim societies, and modernity has always become interesting issue to discuss. This is partly because, as predicted in certain theory of modernization, the role and significance of religion in modern society will decrease. Yet, the above claim is no longer relevant to the current situation where sociologically, religions has still survived and has even increasingly become societal needs. Islamic societies have often utilized religious symbols in order to fight against modernization and its extended issues, including secularization, democracy, gender equality, and the like. This article is an attempt to present the current response of Muslim societies to modernity. By way of case study, it elaborates on the experience of the Khilafatul Muslimin, a fundamentalist Movement that uses religious teachings as a soursce to create a new world order. Keywords: Islam, modernity, fundamentalism, Khilafatul Muslimin

Abstract

Pornography has been one of the most controversial issues among Indonesian over decades. This article explores Indonesian Muslim views and conceptions of pornography by examining MUI’s (Indonesian Ulama Council) fatwa. In a plural society like Indonesia, Muslims have used an Islamic perspective to the scope and meanings of pornography in order to support the government plan to issue the porn bill (RUU Anti-Pornografi). The author argues that religious and cultural diversities in Indonesia have challenged Muslim discourse about pornography, partly because local culture and customary laws in certain regions of Indonesia hold different views in defining what pornography is. In a broader context, this article suggests that religion has become increasingly influential to pattern of state’s discourse about pornography and the porn bill. Keywords: pornography, fatwa, MUI, Islamic law.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamics of Muslim understanding of Hadith (Islamic tradition) by exploring the views of Islamic associations in Indonesia. It addresses questions such as a) how is hadith understood by a limited number of ulama (Islamic scholars) and in turn their understanding of hadith become a determinant factor in shaping organizational ideology; b) what is the consequence of the status of a hadith determined by ulama to the dynamics of a collective ijtihad within the organization. The author uses historical and sociological approach in understanding Indonesian Muslim views by paying attention particularly to the Muhammadiyah. This article concludes that the status of a hadith in the Muhammadiyah is determined through collective ijtihad (jama’i); b) the process of authentication and verification of hadith collectively has had a profound impact on the dynamics of Muslim discourse among the members of the Muhammadiyah, and as a result, a structural approach by the members of the Muhammadiyah has sidelined the dynamics of Muslim discourse in the grassroots level. Abstract

The author discusses the nature of the Tablihi Jamaat, an India-based Islamic movement which in the past decades has witnessed organizational transformation by becoming the transnational Islamic movement active in many parts of the world. The author pays attention to the characteristic of religious ideology of the organizational pattern of Tablighi Jamaat. He argues that a strong organizational commitment and voluntarism among the members of the Tablighi Jamaat have had a profound impact on the enduring Tablighi Jamaat activities. Abstract

Al-Qaradawi’s contribution to the development of contemporary Islamic economics is very profound. Many Muslim economists subscribe to his opinions, and some banking institutions and insurance companies have even adopted his views as their general policies. It is very unfortunate, however, that such a great contribution has not been well researched. It is the intention of this research to fill up this lacuna by making it accessible to the prospective readers. The objective of this study is mainly to introduce Al-Qaradawi’s economic thought and its relevance to contemporary development of Islamic economics discourse. For this purpose, the research attempts to shed some light on selected contributions that he has made to the current discourse of interest in the banking system. In connection to this, his conceptions and approaches to issues and problems in contemporary Islamic economics are also explored. It argues that Al-Qaradawi’s works on Islamic economic missed the empirical test to provide evidence of the strength and the reliability of his data theories and concepts, particularly on the topic of zakat, poverty and environment. Keywords: interest, Islamic economics, Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, Islamic legal thought
