Abstract

Since Indonesia introduced communication satellite for telecommunication network, the satellite has brought a number of advantages for national development in various areas, such as telephone network, mass media development, business, education, politics, security and national defence as well as regional and international cooperation. In education, satellite communication could be used for long-distance learning as implemented by 13 state universities in eastern parts of Indonesia. It is also possible to develop the Open University System in teaching and learning process, particularly since the internet technology has been intensively used

Abstract

Inquiry teaching is a strategy or teaching methodology designed to meet the needs of children at their own developmental level with their understanding of concepts. It also puts children in charge of their own learning and gives them a sense of responsibility for their learning. Moreover, through inquiry teaching, children will be independent learners with their curiosity to know and explore something with guidance of the teacher. Finally, according to the definition, process and goal of inquiry teaching, it is clear that inquiry teaching can be used to implement active learning methods

Abstract

The meaning of reliability is discussed in contrast to the meaning of validity. While validity of language assessment results refers to the degree of correctness of representation of the language skill being assessed, reliability of language skill assessment results refers to the degree of preciseness of the representation of the language skill being assessed. The farther the language skills assessment result deviates from the actual level of the skill being assessed, the bigger the error is, and the lower the reliability of the language skills assessment is. Estimating reliability means collecting evidence of consistency

Abstract

This article is written in an attempt to argue that there is a need of uniformity in terms of grammar when English is taught as a foreign language. Thus, the idea that prescriptivism is "out of date" as well as "not permissive to language change" is corrected by presenting some arguments of the need to maintain its application. Some of those are related to language testing, language environment, size of foreign language classess and text books

Abstract

Through two cycles of actions course designed for preparing teachers of English for primary education has been revised. The objectives are to improve the presentation of the course and to meet the students need and satisfaction. The result shows that according to the students the course has become more interesting and they admit that they have learned a lot from the course activities. By the end of the semester the course design has been reconstructed based on the result of the actions. Group-discussions, students involvement in material and media selection, adaptation and development are the main characteristics of the revised EYL course

Abstract

This study aims at improving students writing in terms of content, organization, and language use through the implementation of portfolio assessment. This classroom action research is descriptive qualitative in nature and was conducted in only one cycle consisting of four stages of activities. Twenty-six students taking Writing II course were taken as the subject and the main data was the paragraphs the students wrote throughout the semester. The instruments of data collection include rubric, self-reflection sheet, field notes, and questionnaire. The results show that portfolio assessment has increased the quality of students writing as indicated by the difference between the scores they achieved for the pre-test and post-test, and by the rise of scores they achieved for the three paragraphs the students selected to be included in the portfolio

Abstract

The study was aimed at increasing teachers effectiveness in using their time to improve students achievement. An action research design was employed, involving ten IDT elementary schools, tengrade-six teachers, and 110 grade-six students in Hulu Sungai Selatan on the 1995/1996 school year. After three stages of the action research, teachers use of time on tasks could be improved, teachers violation of time on tasks was decreased by 18%, and students achevement improved by 0,459
