Abstract

A basic change is needed in the teaching learning process of Pancasila and Civics Education (PPKn) at elementary schools in the reformation era. The change of the teaching learning process should start from that of the indoctrinative authoritative attitude of a PPKn teacher to familiar-democratic one, followed by the change of materials teaching learning strategy, teaching aids, and evaluation. Furthermore, in the teaching learning process, the student should be motivated to change his passive attitudes to active and responsive ones, to enjoy reading, and to get more information from his environment to be discussed in the class

Abstract

Processes of democratization in Indonesia occur at a rapid pace in many areas of public discourse. It is therefore necessary for the education system to keep abreast of the changes in community. Demand for the political renewal of the society exemplifies democratic processes in its structures and processes as well as preparing students to understand democracy. This article argues that schools and other educational institutions need to demonstrate open and critical democratic processes in the way that they operate as a prerequisite for teaching students how to adopt the roles of responsible citizens within a truly democratic environment. It explores strategies that teachers may adopt to democratize their curriculum and pedagogy

Abstract

This study examined one program which was in place in a multi-track year-round elementary school, a tutoring program delivered during the students intersession. Through interviews, surveys, and analysis of grades recorded on report cards, the program was evaluated to determine whether goals for the program were met. Survey data revealed that students, parents, and teachers all felt overwhelmingly that the program was effective at meeting stated program goals. Report card data did not show a statistically significant increase in grades after students attended the program, but many intervening variables were not controlled for. Additional convenience factors, such as transportation, cost, and timing contributed to the program benefits

Abstract

This study examines the potential of content area textbooks as a lexical environment for incidental vocabulary learning. The two questions proposed are how many rarely-used words content area textbooks contain within a particular number of words, and how different or similar the frequency of rarely-used words is in the linguistic studies and non-linguistic studies textbooks. This study concludes that content area textbooks contain a relatively high frequency of words within Nat3 and Nat4 levels. The high percentage of rarely-used words indicates that content area textbooks are rich sources for vocabulary learning. The findings also suggest that different kinds of textbooks in the content courses can be rich lexical environments for the study of second language vocabulary

Abstract

The study aims at exploring the characteristics of implementation of dual system of education (DSE) at School of Craft Industry Jepara and trying to find the constraints faced by the school and the counterpart institutions. The key persons were administrators and instructors of six small and medium scale industries. An in-depth interview, observation and documentation were used to collect data. Domain analysis was employed to analyze the data. Triangulation was intended to obtain validity of the data. The findings indicate that the DSE is implemented as a field work plus, the majority of industries involved are of small scale, the school council does not effectively mediate the school and the industries, the DSE does not result in the expected added values yet, and there are many constraints faced by the school and the industries in implementing the program
