Abstract

The Influence Of Live Model, Symbolic Model, and Verbal Description Model On Senior High School Students’ Understanding of Sociological Concepts. This study was aimed at investigating how live, symbolic, and verbal description models relate to students’ understanding of sociological concepts. Correlational research design, involving 43 students, was employed in the study. The results show the highly significant influence of live, symbolic, and verbal description models on the students’ understanding of sociological concepts (F= 39.891, p=0.001). Furher computation of each variable, however, demonstrates that live model has stronger correlation to the students’ understanding of sociological concepts than the other models (live model, r = 0.544, symbolic model, r = 0.375, verbal decription model, r = 0.475).

Abstract

Religious, Social, and Cultural Roots of the Quality Management Of Religion-based Primary Schools. This article analyzes and gives meanings to the religious, social, and cultural roots of the quality management of religion-based primary schools. This qualitative research employed multi-case design and phenomenological approach. Participant observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation study were conducted to collect the data. Each case in the data was analyzed referring to Miles and Huberman’s flow model, and Yin’s comparative technique was used to have comparisons across cases. The results show that religion-based primary schools have a strong commitment to quality, and have holistic and dynamic approach to the meaning of quality. The schools also have quality management ensuing from the commitment and the approach. Quality services provided by the schools emanate from the understanding of religious teachings; the services were the manifestation of commitment to the religion and to God. The socio-economy of the urban and middle-high class is also attributable to the accomplishment of the holistic quality. Quality culture as internalized by the predecessors and transformed by the successors helps inspire and motivate the school community members to achieve the quality.

Abstract

Curriculum Development of Sustainable Tourism Training and Education. The present research aims to devise guides for curriculum development of sustainable tourism training and education from the perspectives of tourists. The research involved 449 tourists visiting Indonesia in 2006. Random sampling technique was employed to select the sample and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistical procedure and factorial analysis. The study identified several travel charcateristics and six factors that attract tourists to visit Indonesia. The findings allude to the notion that the curriculum development of sustainable tourism training and education needs to integrate some factors: quality of products and services, creativeness and innovation, information technology, and development of multi-tasking ability. The trainees should be made aware of the importance of natural and cultural conservation, indeginous uniqueness, transportation and communication system, preparation for efficient work.

Abstract

The effectiveness of Cooperative Learning Approach in Improving the Students’ Activities and Learning Achievement. This classroom action research (CAR) was aimed at improving the students’ learning achievement through the application of Cooperative Learning Approach. There were 26 students involved in the study which took place in the academic year of 2007/2008. Observations were conducted to collect relevant data on students’ and lecturer’s activities. The students’ achievement was measured using a test. Computation in the forms of percentage and average score was carried out to show the results of the data analysis. The results demonstrate that 1) the students’ scientific attitude in Cycle I was quantified as 60.69%, in Cycle II 71.16%, in Cycle III 80.77%,  2) the lecturer’s teaching activities were getting better as the cycles progressed, and 3) the students’ achievement in Cycle I was 5.92, in Cycle II 6.71, and in Cycle III 7.62. The results show that the application of Cooperative Learning Approach can improve the quality of students’ learning activities and the students’ learning achievement.

Abstract

Flexibility, Feedback, and Combinational Method in the Teaching and Learning of Rolling Exercise. This article reports on a research project looking at the relationships of combinational teaching method, flexibility, and feedback and the students’ achievement in learning backward roll exercise. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 96 out of 116 male students of SMP (Junior High School) Pax Christi Manado. The results show that 1) there was no interaction between combinational teaching method and flexibility in improving the students’ learning achivement, 2) there was no interaction between combinational teaching method and feedback in promoting the students’ learning achievement, 3) there was no interaction between flexibility and feedback in raising the students’ learning achievement, 4) there were some interactions among combinational teaching method, flexibility, and feedback in ameliorating the students’ learning outcomes, 5) 4-stage combinational method had better influence on the students’ learning than that of 7-stage combinational method, 6) above-average flexibility (suppleness) resulted in better learning than below-average flexibility did, and 7) detailed feedback allowed for better students’ achievement than that of sketchy feedback.
