Abstract

This article argues that ensuring university graduates that are qualified and professional is imperative. However, since surface approaches to learning seem to still dominate the teaching and learning process in Indonesian higher education, students degree of qualification and professionalism upon graduation, is likely to be superficial and very limited to familiar areas of aplication, and thus it is hard to be transformed for new challenges. For this reason, future development of the teaching and learning process should foster deep approaches to learning. This can take place if the curriculum is learner-centered and competency-based in its true sense. At the end of the paper, some examples of creative teaching and learning processes that might foster deep learning are presented.

Abstract

The effectiveness of new mathematics, which has been implemented in Indonesia for 29 years, in increasing student achievement is still in question. Starting from two or three years ago, Indonesia has tried out a new kind of approach in teaching mathematics, the so called Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). This article portrays the similarities and differences between these two approaches, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.

Abstract

In the structure of the competency-based curriculum for junior secondary school (SMP/MTs), Social Science is offerred to grade VII, VIII, and IX, covering Economics, Geography, and History. This indicates that an interdisciplinary approach needs to be implemented. In the 1994 curriculum, social science was taught by a team of teachers, with each still focusing on their own specialization. In contrast, in the competency-based curriculum, social science should be really team taught, with a group of teachers teaching together. Therefore, to make the teaching and learning process run well, it is suggested that social science teachers be trained prior to the implementation of the competency-based curriculum in their classroom. The old approach is incompatible with the social science concept. In order to make the competence-based curriculum run well, especially in the social science course, it is necessary to organize trainings for the social science teachers.

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of principals legitimate power on the teachers performance. It was conducted in ten Public Senior High Schools in Manado. A stratified random sampling was employed in this study to select 140 techers. The data were collected using a questionnaire in the form of statements/questions of Likert scales. The data were then analyzed statistically by descriptive analysis and simple linear regression. The results indicated that the exertion of power by the principal to increase the teachers performance was more of legitimate power, and that the legitimate power influenced the teacherss performance. This finding can be used as a stepping stone to conduct further research on principals legitimate power.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop an instrument for measuring students self-confidence toward Mathematics. The instrument was tried out twice to 150 students of the faculty of engineering, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ). The factor analysis produces eight factors extracted from the data obtained by exploratory method Principal Components Analysis (PCA), which was in accordance with the theoretical estimated factors. Theta reliability was used to determine the reliability of the instrument (Q = 0.7929). Theta internal consistency obtained was Q = 0.7177. It can be concluded that the Questionnaire measuring self-confidence toward Mathematics developed has an appropriate construct validity and internal consistency. Further try-out is still needed to standardize this instrument which can then be used to measure students self-confidence toward Mathematics in wider areas.

Abstract

The purposes of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Metacognitive Strategies in Cooperative Learning (MS-CL), compared to Metacognitive Strategies (MS), in genetics learning. A quasi-experiment design was applied in this study, involving 92 out of 230 third-year students of SMAN 6 Surabaya. Data were collected by means of achievement test and were then analyzed by analyses of covariance. The results indicated that the thinking skills of the students employing MS-CL were low, but their scores on genetics exam were not significantly different from those employing MS. However, the MS-CL was found to develop students colaborative skills. The students with high ability showed higher thinking skill and higher score on genetics exam than students with low ability.
