Abstract

This research investigates whether the J-type firm (high agency cost of free cash flow) provide more conservative financial statements than non J-type firm. Besides, this research also aim to examine the moderating effects of debt, dividend, stock repurchase, cash persistency, and corporate governance on the relationship between the level of agency cost of free cash flow and conservatism level of financial statements. This research uses two measurement of conservatism, namely accrual conservatism and market value conservatism. Research sample includes manufacturing companies listed in the Indonesian Stock Exchange for the year 2007, 2008 and 2010. The result proves that there is a positive and significant relationship between the level of agency cost of free cash flow and the two measurement of conservatism level of financial stataments. However, this research shows that there is no effect of the moderating variables on that relationship.

Abstract

This study examines the association of accounting conservatism, growth and macro-economic risk factors and valuation error of residual income model in Indonesian Stock Exchange. We use beta, book to market ratio, and size as proxies for macro-economic risk. Using sample of 186 companies taken from LQ-45 for the year of 2001 – 2005, we find that accounting conservatism and growth, have no significant influence toward residual income model valuation error. B/M has significant influence toward valuation error and has consistent sign as predicted by theory. Beta and Size has no significant influence toward valuation error. Overall, macro-economic risk factors can explain the valuation error better than accounting-based factors.Future research is expected to find accounting variables that can represent macro-economic risk and test their ability to explain valuation error. Also, future research need to confirm the relevance of accounting conservatism in stock valuation after implementation of IFRS in Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country that not only applied the rule of audit partner rotation, but also audit firm rotation with aim to improve the audit quality. This research tries to investigate the impact of audit firm audit rotation and audit tenure to the audit quality. The audit quality is measured by four earning quality (predictive value, timeliness, representational faithfulness and neutrality perspective). The sample data are the public listed companies from period before the regulation (1999-2001) to period after the regulation (2004-2008). This research finds that in the pre-regulation period, generally there is no impact of audit firm tenure to audit quality. In the after regulation period, audit firm tenure has convex relationship with audit quality from neutrality and timeliness perspectives with minimum point at 10 and 8.3 years (decrease for 10 years and 8.3 years and then increase). As the decrease period is quite long, we can conclude that the relationship between audit firm tenure and audit quality is negative. This research also found that generally no impact of audit rotation on audit quality, but 2 from 8 regression found that audit rotation decrease the audit quality in the pre and after regulation period. Specializations have positive impact to audit quality. Mandatory audit firm rotation may not be the most efficient way to enhance audit quality.

There are 124 observations that meet the sample criteria, data are analyzed using Eviews 6.0. The results show that the audit committee activities which measured by the number of audit committee meetings have significant positive effect on the audit fees. Meanwhile, institutional ownership, diffused and blockholders institutional ownership do not significantly affect to the audit fees. Abstract

Previous studies have shown that a weak internal control may lead to increased moral hazard and adverse selection and may in turn lead to increased investment inefficiency. This study examine investment efficiency of firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange after the release of Bapepam-LK regulation on internal control in 2003. Regression analysis showed that after the issuance of the regulation on internal control, financial reporting quality is negatively related to investment inefficiency. However, a similar patternt is not detected in under investment gourp of sample. In regard to financial resources constraints, the level of under (over) investment between financialy constrained and unconstrained firms are of no difference. Taken as a whole, the findings support the important role of strong internal control system in reducing investment inefficiency that stems from over investment. In addition, firms’financial constraints do not affect investment inefficiency.
