Abstract

Indonesia is the largest natural rubber producer in the world after Thailand. Indonesia was ranked second in the world in terms of production, and ranked first in terms of land area. Beside Thailand, the main competitor of indonesia’s natural rubber in the international market comes from Malaysia. Observing that it carried out a study with the aim to analyze the response of supply and demand for Indonesia’s natural rubber in the international market. This study uses econometric approach, simultaneous equation model, using two stages least square method. The main results of this study indicate that the supply and demand for Indonesia natural rubber. Thailand is a country that is decisive in the formation of the world’s natural rubber prices from the supply side. This is closely related to the Thai government that consistently develop natural rubber from the upstream to the downstream. In Indonesia, there is the impression the government’s attention is diverted to the development of palm oil. Thus, to develop natural rubber in Indonesia is required to stabilize natural rubber prices through increased raw material quality of natural rubber both at the level of people’s plantations and large estates. In addition, the downstream industrial policy, particularly natural rubber processing industry, which had been launched a few years ago, needs to be consistently implemented by the Indonesia  government.

Abstract

Palm oil is the leading agricultural export commodity of Indonesia, which is the biggest palm oil producer and exporter in the world. The size of palm oil plantations increases 3,27-11,33 percent every year. Despite the increased plantation size, Indonesian palm oil export has negative growth with the peak at negative 10,32% in 2013. Compared with the main competitor, the CPO export of Indonesia always beats Malaysia. However, Malaysia leads in refinery and fraction and oleochemical group commodities. This study was aimed to determine factors determining Indonesia palm oil export and its competitiveness in the world market and compared with Malaysia. The observation was performed from 2001 to 2014 on 10 leading importing countries using Gravity Model theory with palm oil export value as the dependent variable and the GDP per capita of Indonesia and the importing countries, geographical distance, population, soy oil price, and RSPO regulation as the independent variables. To determine the competitiveness, the method used here was RCA (Revealed Comparative Advantage) to analyze the comparative competitiveness and Vollrath Index to analyze the competitiveness. The research result showed that Indonesia’s GDP per capital had positive and significant influence on Indonesian palm oil export. Meanwhile, the GDP per capita of importing countries had negative and significant influence on Indonesian palm oil export value. The analysis result of competitiveness revealed that Indonesia’s CPO commodity had comparative and competitive advantages over Malaysia. Refinery and fraction and oleochemical group commodities had similar result. Indonesian commodities had comparative and competitive advantages in the world market but lost the competition with Malaysian commodities.

The rubber farmers was powerless both socially and economically. The social powerless condition was depicted by rubber farmers’ weakness in accessing extension information, health services, and social security. The economical powerless condition was depicted by weak access to capital, educations, production inputs, and the household access to electricity, gas, clean water, exception market access. Significant positive correlation was found between the social capital and the empowerment of rubber farmers. Abstract

Natural rubber is one of Indonesia’s leading plantation export with increasing area and production every year. However, Indonesian natural rubber export in the world market has negative growth and even lower growth than a competing country, Thailand. The purpose of this study was to determine the determinant factors of Indonesian natural rubber export value and the competitiveness of Indonesian natural rubber in the world market and compare it with Thailand. Determinant was observed for 10 years (2001-2014) in 10 main Indonesian natural rubber importing countries using Gravity Model theory with natural rubber export value as the dependent variable and GDP per capita of Indonesia and the importing countries, geographic distance, population, real exchange rate, world crude oil price, and IRCo membership as the independent variables. To observe competitiveness, RCA/Revealed Comparative Advantage (comparative advantage) and Vollrath Index (to analyze competitive advantage). The research result showed that the GDP per capita of Indonesia and destination countries, population and IRCo membership had positive and significant influence on Indonesian natural rubber export.
