Abstract

This study aims to determine the friction in demand trends and the factors that cause a friction in consumer demand for local and import offal-good ex-Australia in the traditional markets of Makassar. Purpose of this research is for information and reference for our stakeholders on demand of local and import offal-good ex-Australia in the traditional markets of Makassar. The results of this study indicate that factors that cause a friction in demand for local and import offal-good ex-Australia are: product quality, affordability, accessibility and just try. Selection of local offal-good generally caused by factors of product quality (30.00%). While the types of import offal-good ex-Australia is commonly caused by the affordability of the price (39.00%). The trend friction in consumer demand switching from local offal-good type to import offal-good ex- Australia type can be seen from the degree of acquisition and loss. The results showed that the types of Local Offal-Good decreased from 47% to 42.33%. While the types of Import Offal-Good ex-Australia have increased from 53% to 57.33%. From these findings to forecast trends Import Offal-Good ex-Australia will dominate market share Offal-Good in the Traditional Market of Makassar.   Key words: Markov analysis, Cattle offal, Meat market

Abstract

One factor affecting productivity of bali cattle is availability of good quality forages. Based on that reason, Australian Centre for Internatioanal Agriculture Research (ACIAR) in cooperation with Hasanuddin University and BPTP of South Sulawesi funded a program with an aim to improve forage management for bali cattle in South Sulawesi. This activity was carried out under farm condition involving sixty “best-bet” farmers in twelve villages across three districts (Barru, Bone and Gowa). Aspects evaluated in this program were utilization of existing forages and  utilization of new forages by the farmers. In addition, sufficiency of forage for the cattle of best bet farmers was also evaluated. The results indicated that before implementation of ACIAR program, the average proportion of forage used by the farmers to feed on the cattle was 43.4% elephant grass, 34.4% native grass, 12.6% peanut straw/maize stover, 9.1% rice straw, and 0.7% tree legumes. After program implementation, there was a change in the proportion of forage for cattle, namely  47.3% elephant grass, 13.4% native grass, 12.4% peanut straw/maize Stover, 12.3% rice straw, 4.1% tree legume leaves.  Proportion of some new forages used by the farmers was 2.1% setaria,  2.5% mulato, 5.1% paspalum, and 0.9% panicum. In conclusion, there was a different in the proportion of forages used by the farmers to feed on the cattle before and after project implementation, in which the proportion of elephant grass and tree legume leaves increased and decreased in the use of native grass, while use of agricultural byproduct was relatively stable. In terms of utilization of new grasses introduced, paspalum was the most popular grass for best bet farmer to feed on the cattle.   Key words: Forage management, bali cattle, South Sulawesi

Abstract

Cholesterol is very beneficial for the body but it needs attention when its level is increasing in the blood. The objective of the study was to determine cholesterol level and growth rate of white rat fed on ration containing sago waste, shrimp waste or their combinations. Fourty males Spraque dowley rats, aged two months with average body weight 195.62 g, were randomly assigned to one of ten experimental treatments according to completely randomised design with four replication for each treatment combination. The treatments were  R0 (control diet), ASA 20 LU 0 (20% sago waste  and 0% shrimp waste),  ASA 0 LU 10 (0% sago waste and 10% shrimp waste), ASA 17.5 LU 2.5 (17.5% sago waste and 2.5% shrimp waste), ASA 15 LU 5 % (15% sago waste  and 5% shrimp waste), ASA 12.5 LU 7.5  (12.5% sago waste  and 7.5% shrimp waste),  ASA 10 LU 10 (10% sago waste  and 10% shrimp waste), ASA 7.5 LU 12.5  (7.5% sago waste and 12.5% shrimp waste), ASA 5 LU 15  (5% sago waste and 15% shrimp waste %), ASA 2.5 LU 17.5 (2.5% sago waste  and 17.5% shrimp waste).Variables measured included feed intake, live weight gain, plasma cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglyceride and meat cholesterol. The results showed that treatments had no (P>0.05) effects on feed intake, live weight gain, feed efficiency, plasma HDL and LDL as well as meat cholesterol. However significant differences (P<0.01) were found on plasma cholesterol and plasma triglyceride due to treatment. The lowest levels of plasma cholesterol and plasma triglyceride were observed for treatment ASA 15 LU which were 45.95 mg/dl and 43.81 mg/dl,crespectively. It can be concluded that levels of sago waste, shrimp waste and the combinations in the ration did not affect feed intake, weight gain, feed efficiency, plasma HDL, plasma LDL and meat cholesterol but it affected plasma triglycerides and plasma cholesterol of rat. Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of feeding diet without sea-grass (control) and diets containing sea-grass (4.5% Euchema cottonii or 4.5% Gracillaria verucosa) on final body weight, carcass percentage and the abdominal fat of  broilers. Fifty-four 1-day-old SUR-707 unisex broiler chicken, were randomly placed into 18 cages and fed isocalorie-isoprotein diets containing 4.5% of two different sea-grass sources (Eucheuma cottonii or Gracilaria verrucosa) and control. Parameters observed were production performance of broiler. Body weight was measured by the live weight of the birds at 42 days, end of study period. After slaughtering, birds were processed for carcass weight. Abdominal fat as part of waste was measured by weight and carcass percentage was expressed as the ratio of carcass weight and final body weight times 100%. The results showed that treatments had no significant effects (P>0.05) on all parameters.  Although the differences were not statistically different, the results showed numerical differences for all parameters. In conclusion, sea-grass treatments have a tendency to produce higher carcass percentage and lower abdominal fat than diet without sea-grass (control).   Key words: Seaweed, Live body weight, Carcass, Abdominal fat

Abstract

The aim of study was to investigate the effect of adding fish oil and sunflower seed oil in yogurt produced from skim milk as unsaturated fatty acids which could reduce blood cholesterol levels of mice (Mus musculus). Research Materials are  skim milk, lamuru fish oil, sunflower seed oil, starter plain yogurt Lb.delbrueckii subps. bulgaricus, penoptalin 1%, NaOH 0.1 N and experimental animals. Experimental animals used were 27 male mice (Mus musculus), aged 2-3 month and weight 25-30 g. The experiment was carried out in a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design. The first factor was the percentage of fish oil (0, 1 and 2%), and the second factor was the percentage of sunflower seed oil (0, 1 and 2%), and three replication for each treatment combination. The results indicated that addition of fish oil and sunflower seed oil did not affect pH and lactic acid percentage of yogurt, but significantly affected the cholesterol of mice. The highest reduction level of cholesterol of mice was obtained in the mice given yogurt with addition of 2% fish oil and 2% sunflower seed oil. Key words : Fish oil, Sunflower seed oil, Cholesterol

Abstract

Farmers’ participation in agricultural extension can improve the relevancy between extension services and the farmer needs. There are many factors that may affect farmers’ participation in agricultural extension. The aim of this study was to understand influence of characteristic and perception of farmers onto extension towards level of farmer participation in agricultural extension. Method applied was non experimental design survey with structural equation model analysis and analysed using Lisrel 8,3 application. The number samples were which were obtained from two areas, 103 that divided by two area, central area 57 samples and non central area 46 samples. Exogenous variable was farmers’ characteristics and endogenous variable were farmers’ perception and level of farmers’ participation in agricultural extension. The analysis of structural model indicated that farmers’ characteristics negatively correlated with farmers’ perception to agricultural extension in which the higher levels of age, cosmopolite, and formal education. Similarly, farmers’characteristics negatively affected either directly or indrectly farmer participation, meaning the higher levels of age, formal education, and cosmopolite the lower participation level on the extension. Effects of perception on participation was significantly negative, indicating that the higher perception the higher participation in the extension.  Quality of extension services e.g. extension materials, method used, and capacity of extension services must be improved. Current extension services can only meet the needs of young farmers. The more complex the farmers’ needs the more unlikely the extension to meet famers’ needs.   Key words:  Farmers’ participation, Dairy farmer, Extension, Farmer perception

Abstract

The research objective was to compare crude protein and crude fat digestibility of fermented product of palm kernel cake (80%) and rice bran (20%) mixture with those of unfermented product mixture. Student-t test was applied to determine the difference between the two treatments, while crude protein and crude fat digestibility were determined following the procedure of Coen et al. (1996). The results of the study showed that the crude protein digestibility of fermented product was higher (P<0.05) than that of unfermented product (84.96 ± 2.43% vs 65.60 ± 2.39%) or increased by 19.36%. The average crude fat digestibility increased (P<0.05), from 69.22 ± 3.14% in the unfermented product to 85.08 ± 2.04% in the fermented product or increased by 15.86%. In conclusion, process of fermentation significantly improved nutritive value of mixture of palm kernel oil (80%) and rice brand (20%) for broiler in terms of higher crude protein and crude fat digestibility. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the farmer income with bussiness scale  2-3 cattle or  4-6 cattle on-farm beef cattle and racing bull in the Sapudi island. The respondents consisted of 26 beef cattle farmers and 26 racing cattle farmers from the sub district Nonggunong and sub district Gayam, island of Sapudi of Sumenep Regency. Primary data was obtained through interviewing with the farmers based questionnaire prepared before hand, covering farmer identity, business investment component of livestock, livestock business costs (fixed costs and variable costs), revenues and expenditures cattle business. The data were analyzed using analysis of B/C ratio, BEP of  price and BEP of production on each of farmers and their respective number of cattle raising. Bussiness scale was categorized according to the number of cattle raised by the farmers, namely those having 2-3 either beef or racing cattle = 2-3 scale, those having 4-5 cattle= 4-5 scale and  those having 4-6  racing cattle= 4-6 scale. For beef cattle business, up to bussiness scale 4-5 was still  not profitable but for racing cattle farmers, bussiness scale of 4-6 cattle was more profitable than those with bussiness scale 2-3 cattle.   Key words: Farmer income, Bussiness scale, Beef cattle, Racing cattle
