Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the role of some marketing agencies in selling eggs of layer farmers in Indonesia. The research was conducted in West Java, Bali and South Sulawesi. The selection of those regions was based on the category that they had the most populous layer farmers compared to other regions. The number of respondents was determined using quota sampling method from FAO poultry industry data, i.e. 60 layer farmers of West Java and South Sulawesi respectively, and 41 farmers of Bali. The farmers involved in the study were those having layer population between 2000-5000 hens. Data were collected from the respondents through deep interview using a questioner that have been prepared before hand and conducted in May 2010.  The results of the study indicated that among the marketing agencies studied in the three regions; West Java, Bali and South Sulawesi, the role of whole sellers in eggs selling of layer farmers was the most important one, followed by restaurants, traditional markets, consumers and the poultry shop, respectively. In terms of egg selling price in the three regions, the most expensive was in Bali and the cheapest one was in South Sulawesi.   Key words: Sale, Price, Layer, Whole seller, Poultry shop

Abstract

A reasonable effort to reduce cholesterol content of meat could be done by ration manipulation. Sea animals are known having high free fatty acid of omega 3 and 6 series. These nutrients could reduce meat cholesterol level if included in ration. The study aimed to reveal the effect of various level of sand crab (Emerita analoga) powder supplemented in ration on performances and meat cholesterol level of Mus musculus balb/c mouse. Thirty two mice, consisted of 16 male and 16 female of a 28-day old, were fed on one of four different rations with four replications in a factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design. The rations contained isoprotein and isoenergy but with different level of sand crab powder, i.e. 0, 12.5, 25, and 37.5% of the ration dry matter. The mice were treated for five weeks and each week body weight or orts was measured.  At the end of experimental period, the mice were slaughtered and carcassed and each of the right leg was sampled for meat cholesterol analysis. The data collected were analyzed with analyzes of variance and Duncan’s multiple range test was applied to separate the different means of each treatment. In addition, a polynomial orthogonal regression was applied to predict optimal level of sand crab supplementation. Result of the study revealed that experimental ration affected (P<0.05) feed consumption, weight gain, feed conversion, and meat cholesterol level. Moreover, feed consumption, weight gain, and feed conversion were affected (P<0.01) by sex of the mouse. Meanwhile, meat cholesterol level was not affected by sex. The experimental rations containing 25% of sand crab powder resulted in the best performances of the mouse and the optimal level predicted from polynomial graph was 23.02%.   Key words: Sand crab, Emerita analoga, Cholesterol, Mouse

Abstract

Quality of ration can be evaluated using several methods, such as chemical, biological and physical test. Physical characteristics of ration are important aspects in feed mill industry, because they are related to handling efficiency, processing and storage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of using tapioca, bentonite and onggok binders on the physical characteristics of crumble ration. The treatments were commercial ration (basal ration) + 2% tapioca, basal ration + 2% bentonite and basal ration + 2% onggok. The parameters observed were water content, water activity, particle size, specific density, bulk density, compact bulk density, angle of heap, softness and impact resistance of crumble and durability. The experimental data were analysed using analysis of variance according to completely randomised design consisted of four treatments and five replications for each treatment and the differences among treatments were further tested using Duncan Multiple Range Test. The result of this experiment showed that the addition of tapioca, bentonite and onggok as binders affected (P<0.01) physical chracteristics of crumble. It affected  water content, water activity, bulk density, compact bulk density and durability. Particle size of ration with binders was significantly different from commercial ration. Ration with tapioca binder had the lowest value for water content and water activity, i.e. 9.42% and 0.84 respectively. Ration with bentonite binder had the highest value for bulk density, compacted bulk density, and durability, i.e. 0.686 g/cm3, 0.769 g/cm3, and 95%, respectively.  Particle size of ration which was binded with tapioca, bentonite or onggok was categorised moderate compared to the commercial one. Abstract

The research was conducted to evaluate the effect of age and duration of fasting on performance and carcass characteristics of broiler chicken. One hundred and eight day old chick of broiler Cobb SR 707 were randomly assigned into floor pen (0.5 m x 1.0 m x 0.8 m), in which each pen was filled with four chicks. The experiment was performed in a factorial arrangement (3 x 3) according to completely randomised design with three replication for each treatment combination. The first factor was duration of fasting, i.e. 0 h (control), 2 h (12.00-14.00 p.m.), and 4 h (11.00 a.m to 15.00 p.m). The second factor was the age of chicks when fasting was introduced, i.e. 2, 3 and 4 weeks, respectively. The result of study indicated that fasting program up to 4 h daily begin at 2 weeks of age did not alter broiler performance. Similarly, carcass characteristics, especially carcass percentage, carcass cuts and abdominal fat were not affected by fasting program. Under the research condition, fasting program did not increase the farming efficiency of broiler chicken.   Key words: Age, Broiler, Fasting, Carcass, Performance

Abstract

One problem in the application of biotechnology in spermatozoa sexing of X and Y sperm chromosome is a decrease in motility and percentage of live spermatozoa. The decrease could be caused by metabolic process, therefore spare energy obtained from separation medium is decreasing resulting in decrease in motility and percentage of live spermatozoa.  Research was carried out to evaluate the effects of separation medium, addition of coffee extract before sexing of X and Y sperm chromosome, and storage period on the quality of goat fresh semen.  This experiment was performed according to completely randomized design in factorial pattern (2 x 2 x 6). The first factor was the separation medium (A1: 10% and A2: 30%), the second factor was the coffee extract addition (B1: 0 mM and B2: 3 mM), and the third factor was the period of storage(D1: 0 hour, D2: 2 hours, D3: 4 hours, D4: 6 hours, D5: 8 hours and D6: 10 hours). The result showed that the motility of spermatozoa Y in 30% separation medium was higher (P<0.01) than that of spermatozoa X in 10% separation medium and it was higher (P<0.05) with addition of coffee extract compared with no coffee extract addition.  Viability of spermatozoa Y was higher (P<0.05) compared with spermatozoa X and addition of coffee extract not significantly different (P>0.05) compared with no coffee extract addition. The motility and viability of spermatozoa decreased during 10 hours storage. It was concluded that the motility and viability of spermatozoa Y was higher than spermatozoa X. Coffee extract can prevent a decrease of spermatozoa motility during storage. Abstract

The solubility of P from different P supplements was measured with in vitro procedures, using three different tests, which were water solubility, citric acid solubility and acid (0.1M HCl) solubility. Water solubility and citrate solubility were common tests used by the fertiliser industry and acid solubility was a new test developed to mimic conditions within the digestive tract. There were five samples used: Lomon MDCP, Duchess RP, Kynofos, meat meal and MSOP. A separate test was done with the acid solubility test to examine the effect of time of incubation on inorganic P solubilised. The highest total P (%) was with Lomon MDCP (21.6%) and the lowest was in meat meal (5.5%). Duchess RP and meat meal had lowest solubility for all three tests. The statistical analysis showed that solubility depended on source of P and type of solution, with a significant interaction between P sources and type of solution (P<0.001). Solubility in 0.1M HCl increased with time incubated in all samples. Duchess RP and Meat Meal had lowest solubility at all time points but had reached 74 and 83% solubility respectively at 1 hr of incubation. pH value of all samples in acid solution ranged from 1.37 – 1.48. Solubility depended on source of P and time of incubation in 0.1M HCl with a significant interaction between P sources and time of incubation (P<0.001). The results indicated that all of the P sources used in this experiment were highly solubilised in dilute acid (0.1 M HCl) and so can be used as P supplements for animals if it is assumed that the 0.1 M HCl test mimics conditions within the digestive tract.   Key words: Phosphor, Solubility, In vitro, Rock phosphate, Monodicalcium phosphate

Abstract

Gelatin is widely used in food and non-food industries. One of its utilizations  in the food industry is as a biopolymer packaging materials to extend product shelf life. The quantity and quality of gelatin used is influenced by the production process, especially the curing period. This study aimed to determine the effect of curing time and concentration of curing agent  on the quantity and quality of gelatin produced from goat skin by acid process. Material used in this experiment was goat skin of Ettawah cross male, 1.5 to 3 years old.  The experiment was carried out in a 2x3 factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design with three replications for each treatment combination.  The first factor was curing time, i.e. 2 and 4 days and the second factor was the concentration of curing  agent, i.e. 3, 6 and 9%.  The gelatin was produced by the treatment with acetic acid (CH3COOH 0.5 M, v/v) as the curing  agent.  The results showed that application of CH3COOH 0.5 M with  concentration of 9% for 4 days yielded the best quantity and quality of gelatin, with product characteristics are yields of 16,39% and protein contents of  90.74%. Abstract

Compound of 1- deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) in the mulberry leave extract (MLE) potentially hamper the hydrolysis process of various carbohydrates. This experiment aimed to study dynamic concentration of reductive sugar resulted from the hydrolysis of various carbohydrates by raw enzymes of the rumen liquid, with or without the addition of mulberry leave extract containing 1-deoxynojirimycin. Materials tested are maltose, sucrose, starch and cellulose.  The result of the experiment showed that the addition of mulberry leave extract on the media with the substrate of maltose hampered the activity of maltase.  It was concluded that MLE containing DNJ can be used as an agent of slow release mechanism of non-structural carbohydrates, especially maltose, in the rumen system. Abstract

The research aimed to 1) identify transaction cost in small holder dairy farm operating either under partnership or independent system, 2) analyze the influence of transaction cost for dairy cattle business system, in South Sulawesi. The research was carried out from November 2009 to March 2010 at two different regions based on the farming system practiced, namely for partnership system in Sinjai Regency and for independent system in Enrekang Regency. Descriptive analysis was applied to identify the first aim of study and the logic model was adopted to analyze the second one. For the latter, 30 farmers for each system were deeply interviewed. The results of this research showed that (1) transaction cost of partnership system was lower than that of independent system, (2) transaction cost, particularly transportation cost, had significant influence on partnership system.   Key words: Transaction cost,  Business system, Dairy cattle
