Abstract

The purpose of research was to investigate the influence of steamed preconditioning the pellet on water content, water activity (Aw), physical appearance and pellet fineness. The experiment was carried out in 2 x 3 factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design with 3 replications for each treatment combination. The factor A is the pellet-making process (steam/MBS and non steam/MBNS), while factor B is the length of storage (0, 2 and 4 weeks). The parameters observed were water content, water activity, physical appearance and pellet fineness. Data were  analyzed by  STASTS program version  2.6  and followed by Multiple Range Test if the treatments were significant. The results showed that  treatment with MBS or MBNS and the length of storage did not affect physical appearance (colour, smell and taste) of the pellet. MBS treatment significantly reduced water contents of pellet compared with MBNS treatment (12.04 vs 11.45%) and significantly increased water activity (0.75 vs 0.80). The length of storage (0, 2 and 4 weeks) increased water content of pellet, i.e. 10.84, 12.02 and 12.47%, respectively. In conclusion, steamed preconditioning treatment (MBS) reduced water content and increased water activity of pellet, while  the length of storage significantly increased water content and water activity but reduced pellet fineness. Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the role of some marketing agencies in selling eggs of layer farmers in Indonesia. The research was conducted in West Java, Bali and South Sulawesi. The selection of those regions was based on the category that they had the most populous layer farmers compared to other regions. The number of respondents was determined using quota sampling method from FAO poultry industry data, i.e. 60 layer farmers of West Java and South Sulawesi respectively, and 41 farmers of Bali. The farmers involved in the study were those having layer population between 2000-5000 hens. Data were collected from the respondents through deep interview using a questioner that have been prepared before hand and conducted in May 2010.  The results of the study indicated that among the marketing agencies studied in the three regions; West Java, Bali and South Sulawesi, the role of whole sellers in eggs selling of layer farmers was the most important one, followed by restaurants, traditional markets, consumers and the poultry shop, respectively. In terms of egg selling price in the three regions, the most expensive was in Bali and the cheapest one was in South Sulawesi.   Key words: Sale, Price, Layer, Whole seller, Poultry shop

Abstract

Broiler farm is one type of business that attracts many farmers in South Sulawesi and one of the driving forces is the presence of nucleus plasma business partnership pattern. Increasing number of companies involved in partnership causing tougher competition among nucleus firms to get the farmer partners. Those who are able to provide the best quality of service will get a lot of farmer partners and will be able to maintain continuity of implementation partnerships. This research aim was to analyze attributes of service quality dimension (reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, tangible) that can give satisfaction to the broiler farmers on the implementation the partnership. Fifty eight broiler farmers, who have implemented partnership, were selected as the sample based on stratified random sampling methods which were distributed proportionally in the long time of partnership period which was 1-5 years, 6-10 years, and more than 11 year. Then, the respondents from each stratum were randomly chosen. In addition, descriptive analysis and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) were used to analyze of the data. The results of this study indicated that the level of satisfaction of broiler farmers on implementing the partnership including the classification was quite good. This was reflected by the result of performance analysis between compatibility and interests of farmers which gave a value of 77.04% of the 19 attributes of service quality dimensions of firm nucleus analyzed. There were seven attributes that have high level of interests but the performance was still considered low by the broiler farmer plasma. Therefore, it is suggested to the nucleus firms to improve the attributes and to the plasma broiler farmers to establish their own institutions in order to improve their bargaining position to the firm nucleus.

Abstract

A reasonable effort to reduce cholesterol content of meat could be done by ration manipulation. Sea animals are known having high free fatty acid of omega 3 and 6 series. These nutrients could reduce meat cholesterol level if included in ration. The study aimed to reveal the effect of various level of sand crab (Emerita analoga) powder supplemented in ration on performances and meat cholesterol level of Mus musculus balb/c mouse. Thirty two mice, consisted of 16 male and 16 female of a 28-day old, were fed on one of four different rations with four replications in a factorial arrangement according to completely randomized design. The rations contained isoprotein and isoenergy but with different level of sand crab powder, i.e. 0, 12.5, 25, and 37.5% of the ration dry matter. The mice were treated for five weeks and each week body weight or orts was measured.  At the end of experimental period, the mice were slaughtered and carcassed and each of the right leg was sampled for meat cholesterol analysis. The data collected were analyzed with analyzes of variance and Duncan’s multiple range test was applied to separate the different means of each treatment. In addition, a polynomial orthogonal regression was applied to predict optimal level of sand crab supplementation. Result of the study revealed that experimental ration affected (P<0.05) feed consumption, weight gain, feed conversion, and meat cholesterol level. Moreover, feed consumption, weight gain, and feed conversion were affected (P<0.01) by sex of the mouse. Meanwhile, meat cholesterol level was not affected by sex. The experimental rations containing 25% of sand crab powder resulted in the best performances of the mouse and the optimal level predicted from polynomial graph was 23.02%.   Key words: Sand crab, Emerita analoga, Cholesterol, Mouse

Abstract

The objective of this study was to ascertain the incidence of reproductive disorders in a dairy herd. A total of 44 Holstein Friesian cows in a dairy herd were enrolled in the present study. Trans-rectal palpation of the uterine was performed to determine the consistency of uterine including contraction, elasticity, tonicity, symmetry of uterine horns, and the presence of any fluid in the uterus followed by the presence of any palpable ovarian structures. Cows that did not become pregnant during clinical examination were examined vaginoscopically. Data obtained in the present study were analyzed descriptively based on percentages and means. T-test was used to analyze the interval from calving to first artificial insemination (AI) between cyclic cows and cows with reproductive disorders. The results of this study showed that incidence of reproductive disorders was very high; 38.6%. Inactive ovaries, cyst, and endometritis were the most reproductive disorders suffering the dairy cows. These reproductive disorders subsequently reduced reproductive performance by prolonged interval from calving to first AI as well as interval from calving to pregnancy. Lower BCS of the cows were invented as the most prominent causes of this issue.

Abstract

Abstract

One factor affecting productivity of bali cattle is availability of good quality forages. Based on that reason, Australian Centre for Internatioanal Agriculture Research (ACIAR) in cooperation with Hasanuddin University and BPTP of South Sulawesi funded a program with an aim to improve forage management for bali cattle in South Sulawesi. This activity was carried out under farm condition involving sixty “best-bet” farmers in twelve villages across three districts (Barru, Bone and Gowa). Aspects evaluated in this program were utilization of existing forages and  utilization of new forages by the farmers. In addition, sufficiency of forage for the cattle of best bet farmers was also evaluated. The results indicated that before implementation of ACIAR program, the average proportion of forage used by the farmers to feed on the cattle was 43.4% elephant grass, 34.4% native grass, 12.6% peanut straw/maize stover, 9.1% rice straw, and 0.7% tree legumes. After program implementation, there was a change in the proportion of forage for cattle, namely  47.3% elephant grass, 13.4% native grass, 12.4% peanut straw/maize Stover, 12.3% rice straw, 4.1% tree legume leaves.  Proportion of some new forages used by the farmers was 2.1% setaria,  2.5% mulato, 5.1% paspalum, and 0.9% panicum. In conclusion, there was a different in the proportion of forages used by the farmers to feed on the cattle before and after project implementation, in which the proportion of elephant grass and tree legume leaves increased and decreased in the use of native grass, while use of agricultural byproduct was relatively stable. In terms of utilization of new grasses introduced, paspalum was the most popular grass for best bet farmer to feed on the cattle.   Key words: Forage management, bali cattle, South Sulawesi

Abstract

Cholesterol is very beneficial for the body but it needs attention when its level is increasing in the blood. The objective of the study was to determine cholesterol level and growth rate of white rat fed on ration containing sago waste, shrimp waste or their combinations. Fourty males Spraque dowley rats, aged two months with average body weight 195.62 g, were randomly assigned to one of ten experimental treatments according to completely randomised design with four replication for each treatment combination. The treatments were  R0 (control diet), ASA 20 LU 0 (20% sago waste  and 0% shrimp waste),  ASA 0 LU 10 (0% sago waste and 10% shrimp waste), ASA 17.5 LU 2.5 (17.5% sago waste and 2.5% shrimp waste), ASA 15 LU 5 % (15% sago waste  and 5% shrimp waste), ASA 12.5 LU 7.5  (12.5% sago waste  and 7.5% shrimp waste),  ASA 10 LU 10 (10% sago waste  and 10% shrimp waste), ASA 7.5 LU 12.5  (7.5% sago waste and 12.5% shrimp waste), ASA 5 LU 15  (5% sago waste and 15% shrimp waste %), ASA 2.5 LU 17.5 (2.5% sago waste  and 17.5% shrimp waste).Variables measured included feed intake, live weight gain, plasma cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglyceride and meat cholesterol. The results showed that treatments had no (P>0.05) effects on feed intake, live weight gain, feed efficiency, plasma HDL and LDL as well as meat cholesterol. However significant differences (P<0.01) were found on plasma cholesterol and plasma triglyceride due to treatment. The lowest levels of plasma cholesterol and plasma triglyceride were observed for treatment ASA 15 LU which were 45.95 mg/dl and 43.81 mg/dl,crespectively. It can be concluded that levels of sago waste, shrimp waste and the combinations in the ration did not affect feed intake, weight gain, feed efficiency, plasma HDL, plasma LDL and meat cholesterol but it affected plasma triglycerides and plasma cholesterol of rat. Key words: Sago waste, Shrimp waste, Rat
