Abstract

One of an fishery commodity in Ujung Pangkah is flatfish ( Cynoglossus lingua). This study was conducted in Ujung Pangkah waters, Gresik, East Java using fish samples (N=94 males, N=108 females) collected during August 2005 to January 2006. The Study aimed to investigate food habits of the flat fish caught in the area. Research result shows that shrimps was a main food, while crab and Bivalva were complementary food both for male and female fish. Based on index of stomach contents, the index was higher during September for male, and August for female fish. Kinds and percentage of stomach contents varied according to size both for male and female. Therefore, the main food of the male and female fish was simmilar (e.g. shrimps) According to simmilariy index, food habit of the male and female fish is simmilar.Keywords: Flatfish ( Cynoglossus lingua), Ujung Pangkah, Gresik, food habits.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to study IAA content, nutrient uptake, growth and productivity of maize and peanut in response to application of biofertilizer. The research was conducted in a green house of Cikabayan IPB Farm, Bogor Agriculture University, Darmaga, Bogor, West Java. A completely randomized design was applied in single factor experiment for maize and peanut with 3 replications. The treatments consisted of 4 factors: I. Without fertilizer, II. 100% biofertilizer (dosage 100g/pot), III. 100% inorganic fertilizer, and IV. Combination of biofertilizer and inorganic fertilizer with 50% dosage. Biofertilizer was applied using compost enriched by Pseudomonas sp., Bacillus sp., Azotobacter sp., Azospirillum sp., Rhizobium sp, and P-solubilising bacteria. The dosage of inorganic fertilizer was 0.5 gfpot of Urea; 0.5 g/pot of SP-36; 0.375 g/pot of KCI for maize, and 0.125 g/pot of Urea; 0.5 g/pot of SP-36; 0.375 g/pot of KCI for peanut. Application of biofertilizerenhanced auxin content of maize by 73-159°/o, but not in peanut. The treatment also increased the uptake of N,P, and K of both plants by 2 to 35 times as compared to control plant. The production increased by 270% onmaize and 66% on peanut due to application of biofertilizer. The result showed that application of compost enriched by microbial activator was able to supplement inorganic fertilizer for growth and production of maize and peanut.Keywords: Biofertilizer, nutrient uptake, hormone IAA, morphology responses.

Abstract

Population of bulls in the world is decreasing to 80%. on Java and Bali, the habitat of the species has declined by about 20% and 30% respectively (IUCN 2003). In Java, especially in Alas Purwo national park, the decreasing population of bulls is caused by hunting and degradation of habitat. the estimation of growth bulls population in APNP is increase. The size of population in the beginning is 588 individuals the rate of growth is 0.093 and caryying capacity of habitat is 4772 individuals.

Abstract

Application of ectomycorrhizal fungi on forestry depend on some factors. Inokulum technology is one of the important factor. The aim of this research are to compare the affectivity of two inoculums from two Scleroderma spp., and to find the effect of oxalate acid on ectomycorrhizal colonization. Using cluster randomized design with ectomycorrhiza as the cluster (S. columnare and S. dictyosporum); inoculums (granular and tablet) and oxalate acid (1 times a week; 2 times a month; 4 times a month and none) as the factors. Resultshowed that granular inokulum can enhance the growth of Hopea mengarawan better than tablet inokulum. Oxalate acid can enhance colonization up to 8 fold.Keywords: Ectomycorrhizal, inokulum, hopea, oxalate acid, scleroderma.

Abstract

Demand for rice increases with population and over time. However, the challenges to meet the increasing demand for rice are constrained by some factors: conversion of agricultural wetland (paddy field) to nonagricultural uses, deterioration of irrigation channals, increase scarcity of water, and increase intersectoral competition of water use. These conditions have raised the concern of water irrigation distribution efficiency in rice production. Agricultural sector has to produce more rice with less irrigation water. In addition, water irrigation charges (IPAIR) are also problematic in the area, since there is no water charge. The purpose of this research is to estimate the economic value of water irrigation at Vander Wijce irrigation areas in Yogyakarta, to determine the more appropriate water charges; and to evaluate the differences in water values with respect to their locations (upper, middle, and lower areas), cropping intensity, and rice productivity. Farmers at the upper irrigation areas could plant rice up to three times a year, while at the lower areas only twice a year. The productivities of rice were also different between these two areas, where the upper areas used more water and resulted in higher yields compared to the lower ones. Water values was estimated using Wicksteeds product exhaustion approach. These results implied that the values of water were higher at the upper areas compared to the lower ones. The estimated value of water was about Rp 44/m3 in the upper areas, while in the middle and lower areas were about Rp 32 m3/ha and Rp 23 m3/ha, respectively. Since there is no water charge in the area, there is no fund to cover the costs of water distribution and maintenance. This could lead to unsustainable irrigation management. The above estimated water values could be used as benchmark, the maximum level, by the local government of Sleman and the farmers groups in the irrigation areas in determining the irrigation water charges and maintaining the sustainability of irrigation water services. However, this water charge has to be followed by the improvement in water management system to maintain effective and efficient water distribution among the farmers. Abstract

The aimed of this study was to determine prevalence of Escherichia coli in frozen chicken meat transported through Merak port. The samples were taken from DKI Jakarta (16 samples), Bekasi (11 samples), Bogor (8 samples), and Serang (18 samples). The average number of E. coli in frozen chicken meat from DKI Jakarta was 0.43x101±0.28x101 MPN/g, Bekasi was 10.4x101 ±33.04x101 MPN/g, Bogor was 0.28x101 ±0.23x101 MPN/g, and Serang was 6.72x101±25.79x101 MPN/g. Based on the result of ANOVA, the four areas had no significance in diferrence (p>0.05). The conclusion of this study showed that the average number of E. coli from Bekasi and Serang were over the maximum limit of microbial contamination as permitted by SNI 01-7388-2009 (1x101 MPN/g), whereas DKI Jakarta and Bogor were under the maximum limit. The prevalence of E. coli in frozen chicken meat from DKI Jakarta was 31.25°/o, Bekasi 31.25°/o, Bogor 27.27°/o, and Serang was 27.78°/o. Keywords: Escherichia coli, frozen chicken meat, Merak port.

Abstract

Dog is mans favorite companion animal and they are also beneficial as an animal model in biomedical research. So far, the Indonesian native dogs physiological values for diagnostic or research purposes, was based on literature which differed in breeds, geography and age variety. Furthermore, there is little publication on Indonesian natives dog physiological value which emphasize on its age variety, specially its comparative studybetween adult and puppies. Comparative parameters which were used in this study were heart rate {HR), respiratory rate {RR), non-invasive blood pressure {NIBP) and rectal temperature {RT). The study utilized fifteen Indonesian native dogs. The result showed a significant {p< 0.05) higher HRs values on puppies to adult, which are 152.50±14.76 and 95.93±23.7 beat per minute), respectively, while the RTs were lower on puppies to adults {37.53±0.29 and 38.23±0.73 °C, respectively). The NIBPs values were significantly lower on puppies to adult, which are systole {83.93±13.29 Vs 129.68±24.45 mmHg), diastole {37.50±16.31 Vs 72.96±20.33 mmHg) and mean blood pressure values {58.21±13.30 Vs 91.82±24.34 mmHg). The insignificant result was found on RR values which are 26.50±7.93 and 28.21±14.34 for puppies and adult, respectively. The main reason for the differences in above parameters among puppies and adult can be defined by their metabolic rate and growthprocess.Keywords: Cardirespiration, rectal temperature, dogs.

Abstract

The large of marginal land in North Lampung will require careful planning towards to succeeded of the rehabilitation program. The first step that should be done is research on the identification of existing agroforestry pattern. All research results that consider to community tree preferences should be put as basis on description of objectives of next steps or further development program. Nine tree-based agroforestry patternsthat applied by community at those marginal land in North Lampung namely : Clonal rubber - hedge tree, Monoculture clonal rubber, Clonal rubber- mix wood/trees, rubber forest- Phitecellobium lobatum (jengkol), Palm oil as hedge grow, Monoculture palm oil, Cacao-coffee-fruits-wood, Teak-food crops, Nephelium lappaceum (rambutan)- legum-food crops.Keywords: Agroforestry pattern, carbon pontency, biodiversity, marginal lands.

Abstract

Uric acid concentration could be determined by spectrophotometry method. Uric acid was oxidized into allatonin in the presence of uricase and calculated by measuring the decrease of uric acid absorbance at 293 nm. These uricase were obtained from cells of Lactobacillus plantarum. L. plantarum K. Mar. E was isolated from passion fruit skin and L. plantarum Mgs. Psmb and Mgs. Bst from mangosteen. This research was conducted to observe the activity and kinetics of uricase from various cells of L. plantarum by spectrophotometric method. Theplate assay method indicated that L. plantarum produced uricase, based on the clear zone about 0,2 mm on glucose yeast peptone medium contained 0,2% uric acid. The optimum condition of uricase activity from the three different sources occured in physiological condition. Uricase activity generated from cells of L. p/antarum K. Mar. E, Mgs. Psmb, and Mgs. Bst were 0,1073; 0,0867; and 0,0842 U/ml, respectively. The kinetic parameters for uricase, determined with uric acid as the substrate. Vmax produced by L. plantarum K. Mar. E, Mgs. Psmb, and Mgs. Bst were 1,3635; 0,0316; and 0,0418 U/ml of bacterial culture, respectively and KM 0,1541; 0,0061; and0,0054 mM, respectively. Uricase activity in various bacterial cells of L. plantarum was stable until the second day.Keywords: Activity, uricase, spectrophotometry, kinetics, Lactobacillus plantarum cells.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to obtain information on species composition and structure of lowlandtropical rain forest in Sentarum lake National Park, West Kalimantan. The research was carried out from 26 to 31 December 2003 and from 20 January to 5 February 2004 on the foot slope of Semujan Hill in Sentarum lake National Park. To carry out the research, 10 sample units {SUS) with size of 10 m x 10 m each, were placed, based on systematic sampling with random start scheme, with distance of 10 m between each SU. On each SU, trees with diameter~ 2 em were identified and diameter {DBH) and height were recorded. Eighty four {84) treespecies were found in a 0.1 ha SU, consisting of 32 families, dominated by 16 species of Dipterocarpaceae, followed by 9 species of Guttiferae and 5 species of Melastomataceae. Tree density decreased exponentially with increasing the diameter of trees.Keywords: Forest structure, lowland tropical rain forest, Sentarum lake National Park, species composition.
