Abstract

Most people in Indonesia have already known about Betawi’s folk art, such as, Lenong Betawi, Topeng Betawi, Gambang Kromong and so forth. Beside that, there is also another art, called Marawis. It exists in Betawi’s community since about 1970, and recently it begins to protrude and flourish. Marawis is an art of music percussion, which is played by a group of men, and usually use for some various Betawi’s ceremonies, like wedding, pengajian (majlis), and some other ceremonial events. The main instruments are Marawis and Hajir. The songs mostly in Arabic language comprising Islamic values. Hence, there are still some intense debate about the originality of this music, some people said that this kind of folk art is from Middle East countries, but the other believed that this is belong to Indonesian people. Nowadays, it seems that Marawis is considered to become one of Betawi’s culture.

Abstract

This article is aimed at reporting some socio-cultural factors that may have constrained the improvement of the competitive advantage of Indonesian small and medium enterprises (SME). Based on the data collected from metal industries in four locations, namely Sukabumi, Tegal, Ceper and Pasuruan, the study found that the products of these industries, especially automotive parts and components have not been not able to compete in local markets with those from China, not to mention those from Japan and other advanced industrial nations, both in quality and price. Using social capital approach in depicting the existing industries’ situation the study puts forward some important socialcultural factors that have contributed to the competitive disadvantage. These include: (1) the inability to depart from traditional way producing goods in which the quality of products is largely dependent on the skills of a master or “mpu” instead of systematic scientific knowledge as a characteristic in modern industries; (2) a subsistent mentality indicated by the reluctance to develop into a bigger industry which is beyond the controllability of the owner/manager; and (3) the reluctance to form and commit in an industrial association, while this kind of organization may prevent members from cut-throat competition as has prevailed until recently. The study concludes as long as the situation remains, the products of these industries will remain to stay in the lower segment of the market, and more importantly, these industries will have very little chance of becoming business partners and suppliers of parts and components for big assembling industries. This means that in the foreseeable future the local markets will still be flooded by imported metal industrial products, and foreign small and medium metal industries will still hold a dominant position as suppliers for local automotive assembling industries.

Abstract

In general, research on the migration process of the Minangkabau people evolve around two theses. First, the migration is caused by matrilineal kinship system in which the status and position of male is inferior to that of female. Second, Minangkabau community has a cultural mission that idealizes a desire for male to migrate in order to seek wealth and to gain new knowledge that their homeland cannot provide. However, both theses have profound weaknesses. On the first thesis, if it is true that matrilineal kinship system has driven male to migrate, then in an ethnic group with patrilineal kinship system the contrary should have taken place. But that is not the case. In both kinship systems the majority of migrating people are men. On the second thesis, ia a community that has no cultural mission about the purpose of migration, in fact, people still tend to migrate. A study conducted by the writer concluded that both matrilineal kinship system and cultural mission only play as intervening variables which have increased the size of the migration. The main determinant remains rural-urban imabalances in economic development that have attracted people to move to cities.
