Abstract

In this article, the writer discusses different kind of changes experienced by women in rural and urban areas due to the process of modernization. But in general they both experience a shift in values about family and working outside their home. Nevertheless, modernization does not bring gender equality as it promises. The fact even shows a clear social and cultural gap between women themselves, particularly between those living in rural and urban areas. The shift in values as well as changes in gender relations do not solve women’s problems and dilemma, especially those of poor village women. Therefore, it is important to rethinking the State policies which at the present have been focused on the intensification of the women’s role in development. It is imperative to pay attention to the role of women in the family as the main pillar for nation and society progress. Keywords: women, modernization, gender equality, rural and urban women

Abstract

As a newly independent country, Sukarno as Indonesian president had a big plan to develop Indonesia, namely to build economic, politic, and governmental infrastructure independently. One way to take was both developing human resource capabilities and creating a new potential generation among Indonesian students by sending them to study in the developed countries. However, the imagined dream had disappeared along with the events of 1965-1966 which marked by the movement of September 30, 1965. This paper focuses on pre and post of the 1965-1966 events by raising two questions; how was Indonesia being imagined by the Sukarno presidency within the context of foreign policy in the Cold War era by sending the Indonesian students for studying overseas? What was the impact of the 1965-966 events that they were facing? This article shows that the event of 1965-1966 does not only break a dream that imagined by Sukarno, but also causes the emergence of Indonesian exiles community that had been finally forced them to become a stateless citizen. Although they are no longer Indonesian citizen, both of their memory and social activities of Indonesia have been still so strong up to now. In the term of Benedict Anderson’s words, they are well-known as community of long-distance nationalism. Kata kunci: Sukarno, the 1965-1966 tragedy, exiles, long distance nationalism

Abstract

Historically, Acehnese almost constantly struggled with conflicts. It is recorded that between ulamas (Sufi and Syar’i’s ulamas) had often in disagreement among themselves. The conflict also occured between ulamas and uleebalangs or umara. Not only that, conflict that led people to defend their religion and the nation cannot be avoided when the colonizers tried to enter and dominate Aceh. In this situation, the role of ulamas cannot be denied at all. They took important position as catalysts and mobilizers in the struggle against the colonizers. This information is not only obtained from secondary sources, but also from those directly involved in the conflict. Manuscript of Sirajuddin written by Teungku Muhammad Ali Pulo Pueb, an ulama came from Pidie, Aceh and lived in the 19th century, contains historical facts about several conflicts in Aceh. This Acehnese manuscript would be an interesting subject of study about several conflicts in Aceh because on the one hand the author discussed about Sufi teaching, and on the other, he illustrated the reality of conflict that occurred at that time. Comparison on how other two ulamas, Fakih Jalaluddin and Teungku Khatib Langgien, dealt with the conflict is also discussed in this article in order to understand to what extent of their defends, speaking up for religion, looking after their nation, and also involved in the conflict growth in Colonial era. Abstract

Urban forest is one of few alternatives to balance the deterioration in the quality of environment. Jakarta has 14 urban forests under the coordination of the Department of Marine and Fisheries. In contrast, there is also urban forest located in South Jakarta and managed by local community to provide not only for preserving environment but also providing social life for local inhabitants. This paper aims to analyze the roles of community in the urban forest management. In addition as a city buffer, urban forest is also have an immense economic potential to improve the well-being of local community. The case of urban forest described in this paper is Sangga Buana located at Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta. Through observations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions, it is found that the responsibility in managing urban forest depends not solely on the government but also on the community. The Sangga Buana urban forest is one of examples where the local community practically has managed the forest. Since the very first time this urban forest was developed, the contribution of the government in the development of this site is almost unheard. This lack of support, however, initiates the local community to manage and develop the forest. The roles of local community in the urban forest management are arranged as a long-term participation. As such, the local community is transformed from merely a passive stakeholder of urban forest to active management of it. The forest now functions not only as a buffer to prevent floods and drought, but also provides economic benefits for the local community. In this sense, this urban forest has appeared as embodiment of the concept of sustainable green environment. Keywords: urban forest, Sangga Buana, role of community, green environment, Jakarta

Abstract

My goals in writing this paper are, the first, to analyze and understand the methodology the Muslim feminists apply in their project of reinterpretation of the Quran. I will discuss their understanding of text and contexts, textual and contextual methods of interpretation. I will elaborate of how their method of contextual interpretation reflects their ideological perspective of feminism as a counter-patriarchal culture. I will see how the method of contextualization is in fact another literal approach since this method cannot escape from the important position of text. The second is to examine the impacts of the project in transforming public knowledge and awareness as a sign of ideological change. One of the key objectives of the project is to provide and to comprehend how public response and observe transformation influenced by this project. I will observe in what aspects and levels the project contributes to the ideological transformation from “patriarchy” to gender equal ideology. Keywords : feminist interpretation, interpretation of Quran, patriarchy.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the presence of mosque in Ambarukmo Plaza which is categorized one of the leading shopping center in Yogyakarta. The presence of mosque in the shopping center is a unique and interesting phenomenon because the mosque becomes one of the essential elements of the marketing strategy that the management of the mosque is directly under the management of Ambarukmo Plaza. So that the mosque becomes an integral part of the market system which takes place in the shopping center. In view of the business, providing public facilities are part of the service to the consumer. The mosque which is used as a public facility, in addition to having the function as a means of worship, is also functioned as a means of social activities and other activities. In terms of methodology, this article was written by using a qualitative approach that produces descriptive data about the presence of mosque in Ambarukmo Plaza, Yogyakarta. Based on the analysis of field data findings by using Bourdieu’s concepts such practice, habitus, and arena, as well as market and capital, it can be drawn the conclusion that the presence of mosque in the shopping center opens a new space related to the religious capital, and it encourages the owners of religious capital to compete and to win this relatively new arena. Instead, the owner of the economic capital that intentionally creates this new arena is also competing to increase their capital accumulation through the same arena. Thus, the implication, if any shopping center or mall uses the religious capital to win the market, then it will indirectly strengthen the thesis from some social scientists predicted that this is the age of religious resurgence in the public sphere. Keywords: mosque, mall, bourdieu, religious capital and religious resurgence.
