Abstract

This study aims to do further investigation on Chinese universities students’ attitudes towards native and non-native English speaking-teachers. It mainly studies two major researches on the topic with at least 368 participants from China (mainly) and Hungary. The study critically reviews the two studies and finds out that the fact about NESTs is unsatisfactory. It requires much improvement because of inexperienced NESTs, lack of responsibility, cultural unfamiliarity, and inability to provide opportunity for students to practice. However, it is inevitable that NESTs are considered better at English proficiency and that they are student-friendly teachers. In another study, students changed their preference over NESTs vs NNESTs because they believe that NESTs help maintaining their motivation to communicate in English. However, they might prefer NNESTs for cultural and linguistic (e.g. grammar explanation) competences. Thus, this study offers recommendations for improvement in the context. The recommendations include course on English proficiency, cultural competence, teaching skill, certification, and communication-focused concept of English materials.

In collecting the data, writer used test. The population of this research was all of the second year students. The writer used cluster random sampling by taking two classes as sample; XI IPS.1 consisted of 32 students as experimental group, and XI IPS.2 consisted of 32 students as control group. To analyze the data, the writer adopted independent sample t-test formula by using SPSS 20 version. Based on the data analysis, consideration Sig (2 tailed) t0= 0,00 is lower than Sig (2 tailed) Ttable= 0.05 It means Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference of using mind’s eye strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension at SMAN Binaan Khusus Dumai. Abstract

This study investigates the correlative aspects among three variables; reading interest, guessing words meaning in context mastery, and reading comprehension. It comes up in analyzing the theories and results of some studies that reading interest and guessing words meaning in context mastery would or would not contribute to reading comprehension. It indicates this concern is being confered now on. To achieve this purpose, it is designed as correlational study, where it took the fourth semester students English Study Program of FKIP- Islamic University of Indragiri as sample. Two kinds of instrumentations were utilized; questionnaire and tests. While analyzing the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment statistical analysis. Its findings reveal that the correlation coefficient was rxy=0.817, which was categorized as high correlation. Hypothesis testing aslo determined that critical value of rxy was greater than critical value of ttable in significant level 5% (0.817>0.374). It was evidently proven that there was a positive correlation among the students’ reading interest and guessing words meaning in context mastery toward reading comprehension.  Then the determination coefficent is 0.667, which means the students’ reading interest and guessing words meaning in context mastery contribute 66.7% toward reading comprehension.
