Translation and foreign language mostly influence the use of local language di Indonesia. However, in the translation text entitled "Asal-Usul Elite Minangkabau Modern: Respons terhadap Kolonial Belanda Abad XIX/XX," there is an attempt to maintain a local language, Minangkabau. The original text was written in English by E. Grave an American researcher. This paper aims to identify translation techniques as the form of language maintenance and its impact on the readability of the translation text. The findings show that adaptation, established equivalence, particularization, explicitation, and addition techniques are used in maintaining Minangkabaunese. The assessment of the translation indicates that these techniques did not decrease the level of readability. The readability level is at an easy level with a score of 3.53. This finding implies that language maintenance does not reduce the readability of translation and it is a positive effort that translators can make.

Abstract

Reduplication is usually used by society in daily communication. Principally, reduplication relates with word formation. In reduplication, we need to consider the base of the word, the change of phoneme, and the use of affixation. For example: the base word of “rumah” becomes “rumah-rumah”. “Rumah-rumah” means many houses. It can called reduplication, but it does not change the phoneme and does not use affix. This phenomenon occurs in the utterance of Manduro society. Thus, researchers conduct the research in reduplication pattern in the utterance of Manduro society. Descriptive qualitative research is a research type choosen by the researchers. In this case, the researchers use purposive sampling technique in determining the sample of the research. In collecting the data, the researchers use interview, recording, observation, and Swadesh Morris questionnaire to obtain the vocabulary. Meanwhile, data analysis technique used by researchers is inductive analysis with data classification: the use of padan and agih methods, reduction, the scope of theory, and conclusion. Based on the result of the research, there are some reduplication patterns in the utterance of manduro society, such as: full reduplication and partial reduplication

Abstract

This research examined power and solidarity reflected in the use of pronouns in President Barrack Obama’s presidential speech at the University of Indonesia by applying critical discourse analysis. The speech can be called as a hybrid political discourse individual because he was a hybrid, an ex-Indonesian. Power and solidarity  in hybrid political  discourse  can  be  explored  by analysing language usage in speech and wordings in speech texts.    Furthermore, the analysis of language usage to examine power and solidarity has a close relation to ideology. Power and solidarity are like two sides of a coin. There will be an ambiguity of determing power or solidarity used by one participant to another  in delivering utterances. Power and solidarity were linguistically expressed by President Obama in his speech at University of Indonesia in the use of pronouns. He used power  to show America’s hegemony toward Indonesia and solidarity to to minimize the gab between America and Indonesia. President Obama used power and solidarity in order that Indonesian people will accept him (America) as friend, to show that there is no fight between America (western people/christian) and Indonsia (moslem world).  Moreover, Obama applied these expressions are to secure the America’s politics against for terrorism, America wanted that Indonesia will be its friend to fight terrorism and moslem radicals, and Indonesia will be a big new markets for the American’s goods. Thus, the phenomenon of solidarity, in this sense, cannot be meant only that President Barrack Obama was familiar and close with Indonesia people, but he has another agenda in order that the US interests in Indonesia will be accepted by The Indonesian People. Furthermore, Obama has any concessions that he should do this in order to ‘demonstrate’  that America would like to teach their moral, their ideas, their values and political leadership in the general public, particulary their central claim to political legitimacy.
