Abstract

Initially Islamic Psychology studies and development made many Muslim scholars were spellbound by western psychology theories. They used them as a tool to analyze all sorts of phenomenon Muslim society and give the solution. It is important to remember that the Islamic Psychology concept should be built by the Muslim psychologists their selves. However, the western psychology concept is not necessarily suitable with the needs and purposes in Islam area. Because of that, the writer is interested to discuss the Islamic Psychology Methodology. Hopefully, Islamic Psychology can be an alternative way to solve Muslim society psychological problem especially and all of human being in generally. There were three approaches used by classic Muslim scholars to discuss psychic problem. They are skriptualis approach, falsafi/philosophy approach, and tasawwufi/Sufism approach. They are two studies in Islamic Psychology research; they are the theory and the method. Islam puts wahyu (divine revelation) as a religion paradigm which admits the existence of Allah in belief or in the implementation in the construction of science. Acsiologically, Islamic Psychology is built up to get the prosperity for human being. In epistemology, there is a relationship (nisbah) between mind and intuition. In ontology, it is for understanding human being as sunnatullah. Thus, al-Qur’an is the main source. Both of positivism and rationalism ideologies have different perspectives in finding the truth. Positivism believes that there is only one sensory truth. It could be observed and approved by anyone. In other side, Rationalism admits three truths. They are imperi-sensual truth, imperi-logic truth, and imperi-ethic. Both of the ideologies do not admit metaphysical and transcendental matters. As the result, the Islamic Psychology research will come true. Finally, to build up an Islamic Psychology as a branch of science, we still have so many things to do.

Abstract

The following writing shows the historicity of Islamic studies in the West. It is important to reflect, at least as a comparison for our Islamic studies in Indonesia. Initially, Islamic studies in the West were looked unfairly. Islam was considered a fragment of Jews and Christian tradition. Thus, Islamic studies were positioned as a subunit of Christian studies. At this condition, Islamic studies tended to be colonized by West scholars’ ideology. However, in 1980, Islamic studies began to be looked fairly in the West. Funded by National Endowment for the Humanities, University of Arizona for the first time held an international symposium on Islam and Religious Studies. In this symposium, Islam was considered equally with Christian. Therefore, the research on it was not only about Islam as religion but also as civilization. It was indicated by various approaches to Islam such as philology, social and humanities approaches. Today, Islamic studies develop intensively with the contemporary approaches called post-orientalism which is based on post-colonialism, post-structuralism, multiculturalism, and critical theory.

Abstract

Ma’rifatullah (knowing Allah) is a foundation of Islamic teaching because it is a vital part of Muslim’s  faithful. Other Teachings of Islam stand on it, because without the strong foundation such as knowing Allah sturdily, perhaps, the someone will not  do his obligation, or at least what he is doing doesn’t have any useful for himslef  as a pleasant of life nor for another people as a good behave in society. There is a question to be answerd: What is the nature of ma’rifatullah? In particular, This question deepens in sufism of Imam al-Ghazali toward Ma’rifatullah. Mentioned here toward Ma’rifatullah, because a Muslim is only able to know Allah as in accordance with his limited ability to Allah, who is unlimited. According to al-Ghazali, Ma’rifatullah means  convincing “knowledge”. It happens if the object is uncovered clearly without any hesitations. It means revealed of the secrets of divinity and all secrets of His creations. This circumstance cannot be reached by senses of experience and or logical reasoning, but it is purely a gift or divine inspiration from God through nûr which is given to heart. Thus, it opens up all secrets are there behind this reality, which is not able to reach by someone’s sense and mind. The circumstance is called as mukâsyafah. At the time, someone i sable to know Allah through the manifestation of His creation. Imam al-Ghazali had told that ma’rifatullah is “looking at Allah’s face”. Of course, it means looking at the visible manifestation of Allah traits in this universe.

Abstract

This article is aimed at analyzing critically George Caspar Homans’s theory of exchange. The critical analysis that may be called here simply as “maping ideology” embodied in theory is needed to place the theory within the specific social and political condition, intellectual background, school of thought having great influence on it, and so forth, and also to assesses its limitedness as a theoretical frame-work of scientific research to explain complicated social phenomenon or human interaction. Influenced by psychological and economic theories, Homans’s theory of exchange has been intended at the beginning by the author as attack against Marxism domination that addressed criticism to capitalism as macro-structure oppressing the proletariat by the ruling class and against Durkheimian structural functionalism. By addressing the attack against Marxism and because of his intellectual and social background, Homans’s theory then has been regarded as an explanation justifying the existing situation. Being attributed as psychological reductionism, as neglecting the important role of structure, and deterministic are some of the objections addressed to his theory.
