Abstract

Nonparticipant observation is used to collect and select the data. Referential identity and distributional methods with substitution and paraphrasing techniques are used to analyze the data. The result shows that the ground can be used to show the association of  the target and the source. The association can be elaborated by analyzing the diagnostic components of each domain. From the analysis, there are some association that can be shown among other things similarity in attributes, qualities, movement, and action.

Abstract

This paper aims to elaborate cognitivism and its implications to the second language learning. Cognitive theory or approach views the learner as a thinking being and an active processor of information. Thus, learning is a process in which the learner actively tries to analyze the situations where the application of the rule would be appropriate and to make sense of data. In other words, we learn by thinking about and trying to make sense of what we see, hear and feel.  In order to get a clear picture of the cognitive theory in relation to second language learning, other related theories were also described briefly from the historical points of view. In general cognitivism can be grouped under the innatist model which is also known as ‘nativist’. ‘mentalism’ (thinking as rule-governed activity), ‘rationalism’. The implications of cognitive theories can be revealed in the basic teaching techniques which cover activities such as problem-based solving activity, discovery learning, cognitive strategies, project-based learning, etc.

Abstract

This article is on the social and cultural contents of textbooks for foreign language learners. Some textbooks, published for foreign learners in various languages, are selected in random way before being observed carefully. The basic assumption is that most (or even all) textbooks will introduce to the prospective learners some socio-cultural information embedded in the target language which, inevitably, the learners will have to deal with. The sociolinguistics has it that no language can be separated from the socio-cultural issues. The fact enables any language to survive and linger on. Therefore, all good textbooks must contain the socio-cultural issues relevant to the current language usage in daily interactions

Abstract

The spread of English in Indonesia carries an inherent philosophy with it. This essay will focus on how the view that ‘there is no absolute truth’ is ingrained in the linguistic modality of English. Furthermore it will show how this philosophy of modality may inevitably shape a student’s character since it allows people to create the shared truths they need or to downgrade the truths of others, with all the potential positive or negative consequences. Finally this essay will also show how a visual picture, descriptive text, and dialogue could serve as teaching aids to shape a student’s character through classroom drills in such modality signifiers as modal auxiliaries, frequency adverbs, reporting frames, tenses etc. On the whole this essay relies heavily on Halliday’s Functional Grammar, von Wright’s Deontic Logic, and Hodge and Kress’s Semiotics while the topic of the picture, text and dialogue heavily centers on the mysterious Alhambra Citadel of Granada

Abstract

This paper deals with a practical guide to teaching English vocabulary as an effective means for students to improve their literacy rate. A research report shows that a child (of English native speaker) can improve his/her vocabulary amazingly in a relatively short period of time. Therefore, based on this acquiring process, the writer of this paper suggests that learning vocabulary will be of paramount importance in teaching a foreign language, especially English. Some important approach and techniques mentioned in this paper can be used to help students improve their word power so that they can learn independently without any supervision of teachers

Abstract

In the society, various studies suggest that the way men and women speak is different. Women are considered to be more polite than men and many assumptions arise to support this idea. By looking at that phenomenon, the reseacher attempts to establish evidences and verification about women’s linguistic behavior in which women are theoretically more polite than men are and to discover more information about the characteristics of men and women by investigating the linguistic features between men and women’s speech act, especially in speech act of complaining. The present study investigates the differences of complaining realizations between Indonesian EFL men and women learners. The subjects were selected from the English Department of the Indonesian University of Education, involving 20 advanced male and female students. Data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire in the form of a Discourse Completion Task and a semi-structured interview. The responses were analyzed based on Trosborg’s (1994) complaint strategies as the main analyzer and Rinnert and Nogami’s (2006) taxonomy of the speech act as a supporting device. The study reveals that there is a difference between men and women in proposing the complaining speech act. The findings revealed that men were the highest users of Direct Accusations while women used Indirect Accusations the most. This present study also found that the use of complaining strategies was more frequently employed by women than by men. Gender as the main focus of this research has been proven to have an influence on the choice of complaining strategies: how the gender of a complainer and a complainee plays a role in deciding the strategy of complaining act. This research has supported previous studies on the subject and contributed to the establishment of the knowledge structures of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, cross cultural understanding and English linguistics in general
