Abstract

The world is shocked to hear news of Toys"R"Us toy retail company from the United States filed for bankruptcy to the US government last September 2017. It is inconceivable that the world's largest toy retail company in the world has to close its 1800 store outlets in 38 countries. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the authors investigated the cause of bankruptcy of Toys"R"Us that has stood for 69 years. Through media research and an interview with an online toy player in Indonesia, it is known that the cause of bankruptcy of Lego, Barbie, and Fisher-Prince Product Company is too late to respond to the current digitalized world. Toys"R"Us did not respond quickly to the world's increasingly massive development, especially through the use of new technologies and media. The function and role of Public Relations are not optimized to support the international business communication undertaken. In this case, the role of international Public Relations is needed to improve a positive corporate image so as to attract as many customers or investors as possible. One of them by optimizing the role of Community Relations to improve brand engagement that is part of the brand resonance between companies and their customers around the world. If this potential can be managed properly, it can drive sales growth of Toys"R"Us.

Abstract

This study aims to see the effect of political information obtained from mass communication and interpersonal communication to the voters’ quality of decision-making process in the 2009 Presidential Election. This study examines the causal relationship between five variables, namely media exposure, political socialization through primary groups, political engagement, central route, and peripheral route. The problem formulation is constructed based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) assumptions adapted to the electoral context. This study used cross-sectional survey towards 201 urban voters of Beji Sub-district who were selected randomly using multistage random sampling techniques. Data analysis techniques are univariate analysis with SPSS 17.0 and multivariate analysis with One-Step Approach Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method using Lisrel 8.71. The results show that the majority of voters in the 2009 presidential election used the irrational processing of political information through peripheral route. The study also shows that media exposure and political socialization through primary groups can be acted as antecedent variables to the correlational relationship between political engagement and political information processing.

Abstract

This research started with the idea that many Japanese are not concerned with religious status. The Ippen monks in the 13th century made the concept of religion simpler for Japanese society through the use of amulets as religious symbols that were finally accepted by Japanese society. This study aims to determine the meaning, motives, and influence of amulets on the attitude and behavior of Japanese using qualitative methods with phenomenology approach and the theory of symbolic interaction. Data analysis techniques were in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The results of this study show that the amulets have a deep meaning including happiness, academic achievement, safety travel, health, success, and security. While the reason for having an amulet is to avoid danger and maintain safety, grow self-esteem, pass the test, be able to enter university, as a guard and protector, or to find a partner to get married. Religion, sex, and age influence Their attitude and behavior in the meaning of amulets. So it can be concluded that the view of the Japanese on the meaning of religion is not so important. They still carry God in their lives through the simplest way of omamori as a religious symbol in their self-concept.
