Abstract

The article discusses transendentalism and inidvidualism as reflected from an essay “Self Reliance” written by Emmerson in 1841. In the American history, the writer is a big thinker with a dominant role in the development of intellectuality and spirituality. While reforming the religious system of American society that ignoring an intuition, his thought also indirectly inspires the concept of separation between state and church. With an interdisciplinary approach, it is found out that transendetalism of Emerson is a resistance to the morals of Christianity. It is also proved that the Individualism Emerson emphasized is caused by the condition of American society that had not shown their identity as a nation with freedom in all aspects of life.

Abstract

The main concern in education for the past decade has been on establishing autonomous learners. Giving more responsibility to learners in conducting the course of their learning is possible by applying appropriate approach and structured monitoring. In process-based learning, learners are motivated to experience a full cycle of writing process from planning to revision. What is more important is that learners are also encouraged to measure their development by keeping track of those processes in the form of reflection journal. While, the process-based learning enables learners to sharpen their cognitive awareness by exercising selfevaluation, peer-evaluation, and feedback-evaluation, the reflection journal enables them to evaluate and reflect their overall experience, including the difficulties they encounter during the processes. For this purpose, the reflection journal is designed as a tool which makes learners understand their initial and final strengths and weaknesses, their internal and external challenges and supports, and their past and future commitments autonomously with limited involvement from the teacher. In Stylistic Writing class, processbased learning and reflection journal are essential to establish learners’ autonomy in a way that they raise learners’ awareness of their own ability and needs as well as being sensitive to the issues in their environment. The combination of both helps learners identify pressing problems in their close environment and present solutions to those problems which leads to the creation of autonomous learners. The complain of the lecturers on English students’ grammar reflected in their understanding of reading text and their writing product stimulated grammar lecturers to find out the ways to make students use the grammar learned. The paper aims at exploring the learning tasks of text analysis and text created assigned to students of undergraduate level. This activity is the stepping stone to get the rank scale of the clause structure in inductive way. The topics discussed can be in the level of phrase, clause, or clause complex. After comprehending the level of scale structure, the students are directed to identify the rules they have learned by analyzing the text. To use what they have learned, students are assigned to create the text related to the topics. There are various activities that can be done, such as individual, pair-up, or group activities. Practices may be in spoken and written activities. As it was implemented in my grammar class, the result indicates that students were motivated and reflective in using the language. In the low level of structure, such as phrases and simple clause, it worked quite well. It didn’t take much time for the students to analyze the text for the rules and created the text assigned. In clause complex structure, however, it took a little longer for them to do the analysis. But the result is good. It is also a challenge for students to create independent activities outside the class, especially for the bright students.

Abstract

A good learning model is a model developed based on the analysis of learning needs and feasibility. There are many instructional models proposed by the instructional designer but it is not a guarantee that those models are suitable with the characteristics of the course. This article discusses the students’ needs on the process-genre based model for teaching essay writing. This study was a survey research conducted at the English Language Teaching Study Program of State University of Padang. The data of the study were obtained from students’ responses on the questionnaires regarding the students’ needs on learning essay writing. The re-sults of the study show that (1) there are some explanation and examples that should be considered as the input in teaching and learning process, (2) students need to be able to develop a wide variety of text types, (3) students need to learn different topics of essay writing so that they can enrich their world knowledge, and (4) students need the appropriate tasks/activities that directly help improve their knowledge and skills in developing various text types. Thus the appropriate need analysis can be used effectively in developing a process-genre model for teaching essay writing. Keywords: Teaching Model, Multimedia, Need Analysis, Sociolinguistics

Abstract

Rama-Sintha is a very legendary story, however this story is always worth-watching in various forms—film, dancing, drama, novel even in cartoon. Seno Gumira Ajidarma, is one of the writers who retells the story from different point of view. Kitab Omong Kosong,  referred to as KOK, tells about Sintha's lawsuit against Rama's love. The novel no longer tells about the epic of their legendary love story, but it criticizes  love and virginity-orientation in a patriarchal culture. This is due to the reason what Shinta has experienced in KOK, representing the imbalance of woman in society. This research will use content analysis to reveal the KOK using feminist’s perspectives. This study will employ a feminist point of view to see a biased association of  love to  virginity. In patriarchal culture, virginity becomes one of the standards to value one’s love. The result of this research shows that KOK,is a deconstruction of Rama-Shinta love story, to a story full of anger, arrogance, and jealousy. As lelanang (man), Shinta is a symbol of power. Her  kidnapping by Rahwana is a humiliation against Rama’s dignity. Thus,  to receive  her  back as his wife, Rama asked her  to prove her purity and loyalty. This is shows unequal power between Rama and Shinta, as two lovers. She was a true victim of patriarchy. Her choice to disappear (moksa) is a  resistance struggle against his beloved husband’s domination.DOWNLOAD ABSTRACT
