Meanwhile, July-December contains studies of Qur'anic commentary.

Abstract

As the Quran is the most read holy book, efforts of grounding it is frequently undertaken by scholars in order to live Al-Qur’an in accordance with the term being relevant all time and place. The actualization of Al-Qur’an with local culture in mitoni which read seven letters in the Quran are al-Kaḥfi, Maryam, Yāsīn, Yūsuf, al-RahÌ£man, al-Wāqiah, and al-Mulk, in spite of various types of reading depending on the leader of the ceremony. A term referring to the realization of Quran in life is living Quran in which society places the Qur’an as being read and the highest guide for Moslems to attain a state of happiness in the world and the hereafter. The actualization of seven letters of the Quran is inseparable from the acculturation of local culture with Islamic values brought by Wali Songo especially from Tuban school which allowed and preserved the local culture with an Islamic nuance.

Abstract

The birth of exegesis literature and Qur’an translation in the local language is a response of and an influence from the socio-cultural background of mufassir. It is understandable considering that exegesis of the Qur’an was a result of mufassir’s intellectual construction explaining messages of God in the Qur’an taking into account human needs in a particular social and cultural environment including with its surrounding complex values. In this case, the researcher is interested in Tafsir Fayḍ al-Raḥmān written by Kiai Sholeh Darat, for it was a fact of the prevailing internalization of Javanese culture into Islam which creates a collaboration pattern between a specific Javanese culture and Islam and becomes a particular phenomenon in terms of tafsīr al-Qur’ān. Several reasons underlie Kiai Sholeh Darat to undertake intellectual preaching to people by writing works in local language. First, the social and political conditions in last 19th Century show that that majority of Javanese people are Muslims who are unfamiliar with religious understanding. Second, in that condition, Java was under control of colonial governor that supervised and restricted Kiai Saleh Darat preaching.

Abstract

Since the 16th century until the recent age, the study of exegesis is increasing significantly in Indonesia. This is marked by the spirit of producing commentaries from Indonesian scholars (pre-modern) such as works of Abd al-Raūf al-Sinkilī (Tarjumān al-Mustafīd), Syaikh Nawawī (Tafsir Marah Labīd) and Ahmad Sanusī (Tafsir al-Qurān al-Karīm), and modern era explicitly Quraish Shihab (Tafsir al-Misbah) and Didin Hafidhudddin (Tafsir al-Hijri). On the other hand, Quranic exegesis is magnetizing the modern society, academia, and the government. Two things are a sign that Indonesia necessitates developing new outlooks contained in the works of interpretation, so the view of Indonesian society to be more extensive and varied without being limited by one of his Indonesian commentators. Yunan Yusuf, one of the Indonesian Muslim philosopher, within Tafsir Khuluqun Adzīm endeavors coloring Indonesian elucidation by creating distinctive works that are an interpretation of the Koran from the short chapters (Madaniyah) to the extended chapters (Makiyah). This article discovers specifically the explanation of al-Mulk and depicts a qualitative method with the analytical comparative approach through the two references commentaries Indonesia Tafsir al-Azhar and al-Misbah. Yunan interprets the Koran critically and decisively with the color philosophy, and able to convey the message of the Quran through other verses in the Quran (munāsabah al-Qurān bi al-Qurān).

Abstract

This paper discusses al-Qawā’id al-HÌ£isān li-Tafsīr al-Qur’anwritten by al-Sa’di, a work with a particular format talking about interpretation rule. The interpretation rules are like a helpful tool to come with the Quran and its interpretation as such that its users can avoid from the mistake and differentiate which one is acceptable and rejected. As a tool to understand the Quran, the interpretation rule is essentially similar with usul fiqh (legal rule) in its formulation that must be scientific (verifiable), critical (non-sectarian) and objective (nonideological). This research proves that the listed rules of interpretation in al-Qawā’id al-HÌ£isān li-Tafsīr al-Qur’anare not purely theoretical-objective rules, rather represent al-Sa’di’s ideological and subjective nuances.

Abstract

This paper intends to further examine the concept of Niẓām al-Qur’ān which is promoted by al-Farāhi as the basis of its interpretation method. Thus, this paper places Niẓām al-Qur’ān as a material object and al-Farāhi as its formal object. The significance of this study is not only to see the wealth of the method of interpretation of the Quran but as a form of the development of the interpretation method itself. In addition, it shows the pattern of development in the realm of interrelated interpretive methods. In this case, al-Farāhi acknowledged what he was discussing - Niẓām al-Qur’ān - not something new, but he also emphasized the originality of the niẓām concept. The concept of Niẓām al-Quran for him is different from the concept of munāsabah. Niẓām al-Quran surpasses and munāsabah is part of it, not vice versa. From this concept, there appear wahdaniyah terms and ‘Amud. The first term is the difference between the two previous nomenclature and one of the three important elements in the concept of Niẓām al-Quran, besides tartīb and tanāsub. The second term is the central or central theme of each letter.

Abstract

This paper seeks to elaborate on the textual interpretation of Q.S Muhammad verse 4 and Q.S at Taubah verse 5. These two verses are often employed by the extremist Muslim groups to legitimize their destructive acts carried out on groups considered as being infidels and as such lawfully killed. The interpretation was conducted using the double movement hermeneutics methodology offered by Fazlur Rahman. After reinterpretation, the two verses contain moral values, namely the war ordered by God must be reactive, fulfill the ethics of "violence" and be the last solution. Broadly speaking, the warfare commanded in the Quran aims to establish a benefit for humanity on the face of the earth by eliminating every crime that exists. These two verses in the contemporary socio-historical context in Indonesia can be implemented as a basis for combating the issue of hoaxes and destructive acts of extremist Muslim groups. Because both are crimes and have negative implications for the people good and even able to threaten the unity of mankind.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the concept of asbāb al-nuzul which has been misunderstood by ulama and thus produces misleading conclusions. The results of this study indicate that Abu Zayds criticism of the established concept of asbāb al-nuzūl in the ‘ulūm Al-Qurān was focused on the problem of the relation between the text and realities. According to him, the study of the first scholars was too focused on the Koran itself and the Prophets person as the recipient of revelation, but they forgot the community around the Prophet which was the most important element of reality that existed at that time. Whereas for Abu Zayd, the existence of asbāb al-nuzūl is strong evidence to show the relationship and dialectic between text and reality. To elaborate on his conception, Abu Zayd elaborated on four basic problems, namely regarding the reasons for the Al-Qurans a gradual descent, the gradual model of decline, the concept of Dalāllah in understanding a verse and its relation to asbāb al-nuzūl and finally on how to determine asbāb al-nuzūl.

Abstract

This paper tries to look at the views of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani in the commentary Marāḥ Labīd, his work related to ahl al-Fatrah, the fate of the two parents of the Prophet Muhammad in the hereafter and his reliance on the fate of non-Muslims in the pre-Islamic and modern world The author discovers the interpretation of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani in al-Isra: 15 which classifies ahl al-Fatrah in three categories, namely the survivors, the unsaved, and those who have the possibility of surviving and not surviving. In these three categories, Shaykh Nawawi emphasizes the role of reason, thought effort, and forgiveness which influences a person including which category. The interpretation which according to the author is different from the others is that it leads to curiosity to see more deeply his thoughts, whether he is independent in thinking or influenced by other interpreters, or is related to socio-politics in his time. There are indications that his interpretation is relevant to the present, in the sense that there are isolated modern societies, not familiar with Islamic dawah but fulfilling the criteria in the category described by Shaykh Nawawi in his interpretation.

Abstract

This paper attempts to examine the thoughts of Mohamed Talbi on hermeneutics based on human history. The concept of humanistic historical hermeneutics is a solution breakthrough to understand a law that is considered to be contrary to the goal rather than the law itself, which is justice. Mohamed Talbi as one of the Muslim scientists in the field of history has provided this understanding of Islam. The thinker is not only in line with the times, but also can not be separated from the basic values taught in Islam itself such as justice, equality, and benefit. Abstract

Tulisan ini berusaha untuk mengkaji pemikiran dari Mohamed Talbi tentang hermeneutika yang berbasis pada sejarah manusia. Konsep hermeneutika historis humanistik menjadi sebuah terobosan solusi memahami suatu hukum yang dinilai bertentangan dengan tujuan dari pada hukum itu sendiri, yaitu adalah keadilan. Mohamed Talbi sebagai salah seorang ilmuan muslim dalam bidang sejarah telah banyak memberikan pemahaman tersebut dalam Islam. Pemikiranya tidak hanya searah dengan perkembangan zaman, namun juga tidak lepas dari nilai-nilai dasar yang diajarkan dalam Islam itu sendiri seperti keadilan, kesetaraan dan kemaslahatan. Keilmuanya yang telah terbukti dan memiliki metodologi yang jelas membuat kita tidak akan rugi apabila mempelajari buah karya pemikiranya.
