Abstract

Background: Hypercholesterolemic as an indicator of cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Increased oxidative stress in hypercholesterolemic triggers lipid peroxidation effect directly on the cell membrane damage and initiate various diseases. The use of natural materials with relatively few side effects is an hypercholesterolemic management alternative. Experimental studies showed that Alfalfa leaf extract had an effective antioxidant activity.Objective: To determine the effect of Alfalfa leaf extract on serum lipids and malondialdehyde (MDA) level of hypercholesterolemic rats.Method: Pre-posttest randomized control group used twenty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups, hypercholesterolemic without treatment (control), hypercholesterolemic with extract at dose 20 mg/200 g/d (X1), dose 40 mg/200 g/d (X2), dose 60 mg/200 g/d (X3) for 21 days after the rats got hypercholesterolemic. Serum lipid was measured by CHOD-PAP method and level of MDA plasma was measured by TBARS method. A hypothesis test was analyzed by One Way ANOVA continued by Post hoc LSD test.Results: Alfalfa extract significant decrease in serum total cholesterol (114.18±3.0 mg/dl; p<0.001). LDL cholesterol level was the lowest in group X3 (45.26±6.03 mg/dL; p<0.001), and triglycerides level was the lowest in group X3 (77.33±2.69 mg/dL; p<0.001). There were no differences in MDA plasma level was the lowest in the group X3 (2.07±0.09 nmol/ml; p<0.001) and a significant increase in serum HDL cholesterol (43.21±7.80 mg/dL; p<0.001).Conclusion: The treatment of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) leaf extract gives an effect of lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, MDA and gives an effect higher HDL cholesterol.

Abstract

Background: High-fat diet increases the levels of fat, especially cholesterol and triglycerides that cause hyperlipidemia. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are very easily oxidized by free radicals reactive oxygens species (ROS) called lipid peroxidation, to produce compounds that malondialdehyde (MDA), is toxic and can damage plasma membrane and liver tissue. Mung bean sprouts are known to contain antioxidants which act to inhibit lipid peroxidation process.Objective: Determine the effect of mung bean sprouts to the level of plasma MDA and liver tissue of rats with high-fat diets.Method: This research is an experimental study with an only post-test design with the control group. Thirty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 5 groups. Group K1 received fed standard; K2 received high-fat diet without mung bean sprouts. Group P1 received high-fat diet and mung bean sprouts dose of  0.5 mL/gBW. Group P2 received high-fat diet and mung bean sprouts dose of 1 mL/gBW. Group P3 received high-fat diet and vitamin E doses of 23 IU. All group were treated for 28 days. Analysis of MDA plasma and liver tissue performed after treatment.Results: Group K1 has plasma MDA levels of 1.17 ± 0.14 nmol/mL Mean MDA plasma level in the group K1 Group of K1 Mean MDA plasma level in the group K2 (39.7±0.19 nmol/mL) was higher than the group of K1 (1,17±0,14 nmol/mL), group P1 (2.94±0.09 nmol/mL), group P2 (1.73±0.08 nmol/mL) and group P3 (1.53±0.07 nmol/mL). Group K1 has liver tissue MDA Levels of 1,64±0,11 nmol/g. Mean MDA liver tissue level in the group of K2 (4.90±0.29 nmol/g) was higher than the group of P1 (3.68±0.45 nmol/g), group P2 (2.27±0.10 nmol/g), and group P3 (2.01±0.11 nmol/g).Conclusion: Level of MDA plasma and liver tissue of rat in group P1 and P2 was lower than a level of MDA plasma and liver tissue of rat in group K1, but higher than the level of MDA plasma and liver tissue of rat in group P3. There was a very strong correlation between the level of MDA plasma and liver tissue of rat was given the mung bean sprouts and high-fat diet.

Abstract

Background: Prevalence of Indonesian elderly has now reached 7%, which is considerably high. Physical performance is an important health status indicator in elderly. Declining of physical performance such as hand grip strength in elderly is related to oxidative stress. Furthermore, oxidative stress plays an important role on the decreasing of skeletal muscle function. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) is a lipid peroxidation residue that is often used as an oxidative stress biomarker. Meanwhile, tea is the most widely drunk beverage after water. Green tea contains antioxidants that can reduce the damages caused by oxidative stress. Objective: To assess the effect of green tea extract (GTE) on plasma malondialdehyde level and hand grip strength of elderly.Method: This was a double-blind experimental with pre-post test and control group. Fifty-seven elderly people from Balai Pelayanan Social Tresna Wredha (BPSTW) Abiyoso and Budi Luhur who met inclusion and exclusion criteria were divided into 2 groups. During 30 days, the first group was given 2 capsules of GTE a day (±168 mg catechin and 95 mg Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and the second group was given a placebo. MDA was measured by thiobarbituric acid  (TBA)method and hand grip strength was measured by handgrip hand grip dynamometer. Results: There was a significant decreasing MDA (p<0,05) in the GTE group, but not in the placebo group. There was also increasing handgrip strength in the GTE group but not in the placebo group. Conclusion: Green tea extract can prevent increasing MDA and declining physical handgrip strength in elderly.

Abstract

Background: Nutrition and balance food very important for pregnant women so that the growth and fetal development can be optimal. Children, excess nutrients will be developed into a child obesity, if not be addressed urgently and left until the children become obese adults will lead to decrease productivity.Objective: To estimate the economic losses potential to obesity on the toddler when adults remain obesity and sick so that issued a maintenance cost (inpatient and outpatient).Method: This was a descriptive study with data processing of a variety of the relevant agencies as well as a secondary data in 2013. Data obtained is calculated using the formula derived from research Pitayatienanan et al. 2014 and correction factor of Guo et al. 2002.Results: Estimation of the economic losses potential due to low productivity is 3.492 – 8.717 billion rupiah/year (0,04 - 0,10%) of the total GDP in Indonesia.Conclusion: Economic losses potential due to the cost of obesity in Indonesia shows the loss of high enough, especially for developing countries. In addition to its prevalence of problems that high, loss also influenced by the changes disease patterns, maintenance of costs each disease comorbidities of obesity itself.

Abstract

Background: Childhood obesity is a strong predictor of adult obesity incidence and can increase risk factors for getting chronic diseases. The causes of obesity are multifactor, determined by genetic and food environment changes. Risk factors believed to be the cause of obesity are home food availability status and maternal obesity.Objective: To analyze the risk of home food availability status and maternal obesity to obesity in preschool children aged 3-5 years. Method: This study was a matched case-control study. The case of this study was obese preschool children (Z-score WHZ > 2 SD) and control of this study was non-obese preschool children (Z-score WHZ -2 ≤ SD ≤ 2). Control group was taken by an age and gender matching with the case group. Based on the nutritional status screening result of 53 early childhood education (ECD) schools on 13 sub-districts in Kota Yogyakarta, there were 101 obese children and 101 non-obese children. Those schools were chosen by cluster sampling method and PPS (Probability Proportional to Size). Besides, information about home food availability status and maternal obesity was collected using questionnaire. The data were analyzed using McNemar test and conditional logistic regression. Results: Home food availability status (OR = 1.85; p=0.03; 95% CI=1.08-3.16) and maternal obesity (OR=2.5; p=0.003; 95% CI=1.37-4.55) were the most dominant risk factor related to the incidence of obesity in preschool children aged 3-5 years.Conclusion: Home food availability status and maternal obesity significantly increase the risk for getting obese in preschool children aged 3-5 years.

Abstract

Background: Vegan has become a diet that started to be many peoples choice. Low intake of iron and vitamin B12 is factors that can cause anemia in vegan. On the other side vegans often consume vegetables and fruits that contained high of vitamin A and vitamin C which helps the absorption of iron, that can help prevent anemia.Objective: The purpose of the research know the effect of the intake of iron, vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin C on hemoglobin (Hb)levels in young Buddhist vegan Pusdiklat Maitreyawira.Method: This research uses cross-sectional design. The population in this study are all adolescent vegan in the Buddhist Pusdiklat Maitreyawira. Samples in this study were 31 peoples. Independent variable is an intake of iron, vitamin A, vitamin B12, and vitamin C was obtained by SQ-FFQ, while the dependent variable was Hb with hemoglobin testing system quick-check set. Analysis of the data in this study using Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression.Results: There is a relationship intake of iron (p=0,000), vitamin B12 (p=0,037), and vitamin C (p=0,000) to Hb level of adolescent vegan in Buddhist Pusdiklat Maitreyawira, there is no relationship intake of vitamin A with a Hb level of adolescent vegan (p=0,220). The result of multivariate analysis using multiple regression analysis of the variables that most influence haemoglobin levels of adolescent vegan are the intake of iron and vitamin C. Each increase of 1 mg Fe intake will increase the Hb concentration as much as 0.013 g/dl and increase of 1 mg of vitamin C intake will increase Hb levels as much as 0.002 g/dl.Conclusion: Iron and vitamin C intake is the most influence factors to hemoglobin levels of adolescent vegan in Buddhist Pusdiklat Maitreyawira.
