Abstract

Background: The composite flour (50% sweet potato, 30% corn, and 20% cowpea) had proven that it could substitute 100% wheat flour for biscuit making. Intake of antioxidants, dietary fiber, and protein, had been known to reduce plasma glucose level. Objective: To evaluate the effect of composite flour diet on plasma glucose levels, body weight and food consumption of streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats.Method: Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats aged ± 2 months (± 200 grams), were divided into three groups of ten rats. They were (1) non-diabetic standard diet (ND-STD), (2) diabetic (65 mg/kg of body weight by STZ induction) standard diet (D-STD), and (3) diabetic composite flour diet (1,5 g/100 g of body weight/day) (D-CFD), for 4 weeks, 3 days after STZ induction. The plasma glucose obtained from GOD-PAP method were determined before induction, after induction and every week during diet intervention. Results: Plasma glucose levels was significantly lower in D-CFD when compared with D-STD (p<0,05). The weight of D-STD was found to be significantly decreased as compared to ND-STD (p<0,05). There were no changes in food consumption of ND-STD, D-STD and D-CFD (p<0,05).Conclusion: The composite flour could reduce plasma glucose level in diabetic rats and did not give negative effects on body weight and food consumption.

Abstract

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a disease of disorder of lipid and nonlipid metabolism. The West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study found that men with MetS had probability 3.7 dysfunctions of erection (ED) by using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). Patient with heart disease had the risk 2 times to get ED, hypertension was 1.5-2 times, DM was 3-4 times, depression was 2-3.5 times, testosterone deficiency syndrome (TDS) was 1.5-2 times, and high cholesterol was 4 times. The nutrient deficiency of zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg) was suspected being the main component which had a role in resisting a sexuality growth and maturation process. Objective: Knowing the correlation of Zn and Mg feeding with erection dysfunction in MetS person.Method: This study was observational analytic study, with case-control design in the patient aged 30-60 years old. The respondent in this study was people with MetS according to WHO criterion. There was 82 patient divided into two groups, consist of 41 cases of MetS and ED, 41 cases with the normal patient. The data collected by interview, laboratory assessment and anthropometric measurement. The data analysis using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression. Results: There was significant correlation between Zn feeding and ED (OR=7.15; 95% Cl=1.47-34.71; p=0.007) and there was significant correlation between Mg feeding with ED (OR=3.34; 95% Cl=1.07-10.4; p=0.033). The end result of the multivariate analysis showed the risk variable to the ED event, that was Zn feeding with OR=15.41. If the intake of Zn accompanied with risk factors associated as a cause of ED, multivariate analysis showed HbA1c’s degree with OR=12.57; triglyceride (OR=10.47); blood pressure (OR=5.82); and abdominal obesity (OR=6.94). The result shows that these risk factors can aggravate or anticipate the onset of dysfunction erection beside low Zn intake. Conclusion: There was statistically significant correlation between Zn and Mg feeding with erection dysfunction in MetS patient.

Abstract

Background: Overweight or obesity during childhood and adolescence are important risk factors for the presence of adult overweight or obesity. Eating habits in childhood and adolescence influence their healthy condition. Prospective studies of breakfast habits and nutritional status suggest an inverse (protective) association between the frequency of eating breakfast and the risk for overweight and obesity and relationships between no breakfast and increasing body weight. Objective: To examine risk factor of breakfast and snacking related to overweight status in adolescents.Method: This was the observational study with case control design. The first step of the study was screening to have a prevalence of overweight in adolescents. The second step was case control study participated by 100 overweight adolescents and 100 normal weight adolescents in senior high school matched in sex, age, and school. Data collected were weight and height measurements for nutritional status, respondent identity and characteristic, breakfast dan snacking habits and physical activity. Statistical analysis used Chi-Square statistics and multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: Prevalence of overweight in adolescents were 16,8%. There was significant association between breakfast with overweight (p<0,05; OR=3.1; 95% CI=1.4-7.47). There was no association between snacking and overweight, but there was significant association between frequency of snacking (OR=1.9; 95% CI=1.05-3.50), the energy of snacking (OR=2.1; 95% CI=1.13-4.02), and carbohydrate of snacking (OR=4.5; 95% CI=1.94-11.50) with overweight. In the multivariate model, breakfast habits, carbohydrate of snacking and physical activity had a significant association with overweight. Conclusion: Skipping breakfast was a risk factor for overweight in adolescence. Adolescents who had to snack more than twice a day were having the greater risk factor for overweight.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is world health problem which still needs attention. Recently, Indonesia ranks the third in TB prevalence after India and China. Research revealed that albumin decreases significantly in TB patients, due to lack of nutritious intakes such as low-calorie intake, anorexia, increased catabolism, enteropathy and acute protein reaction. Low albumin was associated with increased IL-1β and cytokines inflammation in TB patient. Albumin had a very important role in the body and white egg known as a good quality source of protein. Objective: To assess the effect of white egg supplementation in TB patient towards the level of albumin and the level of IL-1β.Method: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 75 patient selected for the study and divided to 37 patient as the study group and 38 as a control group. Both groups received high energy high protein diet, while the study group received, additionally, an oral egg white-based on formula calculation Baxter for 14 days. Control group received, additionally, an extra soybean curd and mungbean powder. Albumin and IL-1β were checked before and after the intervention. Data is analyzed by using Mann-Whitney.Results: Research results show that average albumin pre-intervention in the study group was 2.82 g/dL and control group was 2.85 g/dL. Average albumin difference in the study group was 3.47 g/dL and control group was 2.81 g/dL. Bivariate analysis results show significant of increasing albumin between study group and control group (p<0.05). Research results show average IL-1β pre-intervention difference in study group (0.9 pg/mL) and control group (0.67 pg/mL). The average IL-1β difference in the study group was -0.39 pg/mL and control group was 0.76 pg/mL. Bivariate analysis results show a significant difference of IL-1β depletion between study group and control group (p<0.05).Conclusion: Egg white increase albumin level and IL-1β depletion in tuberculosis patients effectively.
