Further, the data in the form of informant were gathered from the raters who assessed the accuracy and acceptability of the translation. The selected sampling technique was purposive sampling (theoretical based-sampling).  The data then were collected using document analysis and focus group discussion.               The conclusion of this study is the implementation of 10 translation techniques had a positive impact to the accuraracy and acceptability of its translation. The techniques giving positive impact in its translation in term of the accuracy and acceptability are established equivalence, generalization, transposition, amplification, pure borrowing, variation and particularization. Meanwhile, the techniques giving negative impact towards its translation in term of accuracy and acceptability are reduction, modulation, and discursive creation.  Keywords: Translation of Language Style, Repetition, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Stylistics

Abstract

Translating utterances is not similar to translating sentences. It requires special attention as there is an intended meaning or message transferred by a speaker to a hearer. Context of the situation overshadowing the utterance must be obeyed carefully. Thus the messages will be easily revealed. Speech act is a way that allows the messages of utterances to be seen. Schiffrin (2001) stated that speech act is one of pragmatics’ basic ingredients arranging by words and corresponding to sentences and some ways to avoid kinds of misunderstanding in communication. The focus of speech act is illucution since it shows the intention of utterances uttered. It is also much correlated withtranslation. Intranslatingan utterance, itis not merelytranslated literally, butthere is also an intentionthat shouldbe translated. This paper is aimed to analyze directive speech act in Eat Pray Love and its translation into Indonesian. It tries to reveal the functions of directive speech acts, translation techniques used and the translation quality (readability, accuracy, and acceptability).Key words: speech act, directives, translation, readability, accuracy, and acceptability

Abstract

In this article, I look into four job vacancy advertisements published by two state owned enterprise and two private companies. Using critical discourse analysis (CDA), this article focuses on the text implicit discrimination shown in the usage of the term "unmarried" or the synonyms which are often shown in the text for job vacancy in Indonesia. In order to keep the validity of the data, the job vacancy ads were taken directly from the companies’ websites. This study uses Fairclough (1995) framework on the technologization of the discourse. There are three arguments to be proven in this paper: (1) advertisers’ ideology supporting the discrimination of marital status, (2) advertisers’ perception toward societies’ ignorance in the ideology, and (3) to show the existence of anti-mainstream ideology similar to technologization of discourse.    Keywords: critical discourse analysis, discrimination, ideology

Abstract

This research is aimed to: (1) identify the kinds of euphemism sexual organ and sexual activity in  Fifty Shades of Grey novel, (2) identify the translation techniques used by the translator in translating sexual organ and sexual activity with euphemism, (3) describe the impact  of translation technique which applied by the translator toward translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. Sources of data are Fifty Shades of Grey novel and also informans who assess the quality of the translation. Data were collected by using document analysis, questionnaires, and focus group discussion (FGD). Data were analyzed by using Spradley’s ethnography method. The result of this research shows that there are 10 kinds of euphemism in sexual organ and sexual activity in Fifty Shades of Grey novel . The most dominating euphemism sexual organ of this data is general for specific with the percentation as many as 47.14%, while in sexual activity, the most dominating euphemism is hyperbole with percentation 29.37%. In this research there are thirteen techniques which used by the translator to translate sexual organ and sexual activity with euphemism, the technique which dominates is established equivalent with the percentation 47.43%. For the translation quality, 117 data (59,7%) were accurately translated, 66 data (33,7%) were less accurately translated 13 data (6,6%)were not accurately translated and there were 112 data (57,1%) identified as acceptable translation,  74 data (37,8%) are less acceptable translation, and 10 data (5,1%) are not acceptable translation. The conclusion of this research shows that lots of euphemisms were found in Fifty Shades of Grey novel and some of translation techniques have negative impact towards the translation quality of Fifty Shades of Grey novel. Abstract

The paper tests if the translation of Javanese local cultural terms can denotatively be conveyed in English. The tool employed for this purpose is componential analysis of meaning, which can objectively asses the accuracy of the translation. In addition to this analysis, this study also discusses connotative assigned to the cultural terms by native speakers of Javanese and English. Connotative meanings were determined by collecting data from native speakers via questionnaires. The responses indicate which connotative meanings the respondents assigned to local cultural terms and their English equivalents. The findings indicate that at the denotative level, local cultural terms are very problematic. It is driven by the fact that though translators have tried to find the closest equivalents in the target language, there are still semantic features that differentiate both the source text and the target text. It demonstrates that full intertranslatability of cultural terms is not possible at denotative level. This study classifies the results of the translation into five classifications: (1) both the denotation and the connotation are different; (2) different denotations but the same connotations; (3) both of denotations and connotations are identical or near identical; (4) generic target text; and (5) specific target text. The findings show that respondents can attribute connotations to cultural terms only if they have been exposed to them and are familiar with the concepts that they convey. The connotations can semantically be classified into good or bad; active or passive; and strong or weak. It is also shown that people of the same cultural background do not always have the same connotations. Their prior knowledge plays and important role in determining what kind of connotations they yield. It is clear that connotations consist of posteriori knowledge. Key words: denotation, connotation, cultural terms, intertanslatability.

The translation methods tends to communicative translation method and free translation method with domestication ideology. The impact of the the application of those translation techniques, methods and ideology toward the quality of translation is satisfactory with the average score of 2,84.
