Abstract

This study aims to describe how the implementation of scientific approach influences the score of the students and to describe the techniques or procedures the teacher used in teaching recount texts through scientific approach to improve the tenth grade students’ writing. This research used quantitative research and focused on the regression of the teacher that implements the scientific approach and the teacher to improve the students’ writing competence in recount texts which were taken from class X accounting 1 of SMKN 1. First, the regression of the variable X toward variable Y was low because R Square of the teacher was 0.306 and R Square of the writer was 0.356. Second, the teacher improves the students with the second time remedial test and Belajar Ulang in the next semester. In brief, not only the approach but also the other factors influence the learning process in addition to the teacher who has paid attention to other factors to get a maximum result of the students’ activities.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to find out the improvement and the strengths as well as limitation after the use of role play technique in English speaking class for the tenth grade students of SMA PIRI 1 Yogyakarta at X MIA in the academic year of 2017/2018. This study is an Action Research. The data collecting techniques used were observation, interview, and test. The data analysis used was descriptive qualitative. The results indicate that role play promotes the students’ speaking skill development. Through playing the roles, the students were able to answer questions orally, analyze dialogue, speak and express their opinion. The students could also construct dialogues creatively and practice them critically. Therefore, they could reduce their anxiety of feeling afraid and unconfident in speaking. Besides, they also exhibited self-confidence to share their opinion and suggestion during the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the implementation of Bilingual Program in Fawwaz Global Islamic School Yogyakarta. It is an evaluative study implementing Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) model. This research focuses on describing the implementation of bilingual education in terms of context, input, process, and product components. The subjects of this study were the English teachers, principal, and the students of Fawwaz Global Islamic School Yogyakarta during the academic year of 2016/2017. The discussion of the study is divided into four sections concerning with context, input, process and product respectively. In terms of context, this school becomes a bilingual school when it becomes a national plus school, in which one of the requirements is being able to conduct a bilingual program. For the input, the school already uses KTSP and centra system method. The school employs the entrance system using TPA and psychology test. An evaluation on the process reveals the teaching and learning processes already implement a bilingual program, but still have lots of weaknesses. In terms of product, all of the students in Fawwaz Global Islamic School Yogyakarta are able to speak English. The conclusion is this program is still open to improvement on the factor of teacher’s English capability which should be refined.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to describe the strategies used by the English teacher of the eleventh grade students of SMA BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta in teaching speaking and (2) to find out how the English teacher applies the strategies in teaching speaking. This research is descriptive qualitative in the form of a case study. The data were collected from observation and video recording of XI IPA 1, XII IPA 2, and XI Bahasa. The data were transcribed, identified, described, and analyzed by using theory of Shaun Killianof on strategies in teaching speaking. The results indicate that not all of the strategies in teaching speaking were applied by the English teacher. In XI IPA 1 and XI IPA 2, the teacher applied six strategies, while in XI Bahasa, the teacher only applied four strategies in teaching speaking. The teacher applied the strategies to help students become active during the learning process. The strategies could help the students become more active in the teaching and learning process, because the implementation of those strategies was sufficiently executed.

Abstract

Perbedaan latar belakang sosial seperti budaya, etnis, ras, dan agama kerap menjadi pemicu konflik atar etnis, ras dan agama di dalam kelas. Usaha untuk meminimalisir konflik seperti di atas dapat diupayakan melalui berbagai macam segi. Salah satunya adalah melalui pengajaran di dalam kelas. Semangat persatuan dan persaudaraan yang terbangun dari lingkup kecil dunia pendidikan di dalam kelas diharapkan dapat tumbuh ke lingkup yang lebih luas: universitas, bangsa, dan negara. Representasi konflik di dalam kelas multikultur yang disebabkan oleh keanekaragaman latar belakang termuat dalam film yang diangkat dari kisah nyata: Freedom Writer. Metode-metode pembelajaran dalam film tersebut terbukti dapat mengatasi konflik yang disebabkan oleh perbedaan latar belakang seperti budaya, etnis, ras, dsb. Metode pembelajaran yang digunakan dalam film tersebut adalah metode Suggestopedia dan Participatory Approach. Suggestopedia memberikan solusi pendekatan yang efektif terhadap murid-murid sehingga mereka termotivasi untuk belajar dan percaya serta yakin akan kemampuan mereka. Participatory menawarkan pembelajaran yang sesuai dengan konteks kehidupan para murid.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe the types and the functions of speech act performed by Desmond in his conversations in Hacksaw Ridge movie. The data sources of the research were taken from the movie script. After collecting the data, the data are selected, reduced and analyzed using Searle’s theory of speech act in Speech Acts Essay in the Philosophy of Language book in 1977. The result of this research shows that there are five types of speech act act in 231 utterances consisting 78 utterances of directive, 165 utterances of representative, 10 utterances of expressive, 12 utterances of commissive and 2 utterances of declarative in the Hacksaw Ridge movie. The functions of speech act are utterances of stating complaining, alerting, claiming, concluding, reporting, affirming, forecasting, insisting, asserting, questioning, ordering, begging, demanding, commanding, requesting, suggesting, promising, offering, refusing, apologizing, blaming, yelling, thanking, liking, praising, mocking, being ashamed, declaring war, and love. It can be concluded that the most kinds of speech act used by the main character is representative act of stating.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe how English speaking materials are developed for the receptionist of Galuh Hotel and (2) to find out the coverage of speaking materials for the receptionists. This study is a Research and Development (R & D). The researcher applied Research & Development based on Kemp’s model (1977) namely (1) Research and Information Collecting (needs analysis), (2) Planning (stating goals, topics, general purposes, and objectives), (3) Develop preliminary form of product (listing subject content, selecting teaching/learning activities and evaluation), (4) Main Product Revision (revision). The results show that the speaking materials for receptionist of Galuh Hotel consisted of four units entitled (1) Hi...Good Morning, (2) Let Me Introduce…, (3) Please Forgive Me, (4) Thanks for…. In each unit there were four sections: Snapshot, Come and Speak It up, Language Focus and Get These Questions Answered. The materials covered topic, language function, grammar and vocabulary.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to describe the main characters of The Book of Love, (2) to describe the human values of the main characters of The Book of Love. In this study the writer used descriptive and qualitative techniques. The writer collected the data through observation of the movie by watching and reading the script of the movie several times to get information about the characters and the human values. Then, the writer collected the data and analyzed them. In analyzing the data, the writer used coding, decoding, categorization, and confirmation. The analysis focused on the characters and the human values in The Book of Love movie. The results of the researchshow that there are three main characters of The Book of Love movie; they are Henry, Millie, and Penny.Besides, there are seven human values that the writer found in the movie. Those values are self-direction, stimulation, achievement, security, conformity, tradition,  and benevolence. The seven values have good influence in real life. Thedominant values presented in this movie are benevolance (helpful) and self-direction (curiousity and creativity).
