Abstract

In a partriarchal society the what and the how of women and her body, is largely decided upon by males rather than by women themselves. Not infrequently a woman’s body is used to depict something negative, which not only results in no respect for a woman’s body, but can lead to violence against her. The Book of Hosea is a book that uses the woman and her body as a metaphor of the relationship between God and the people of Israel, where the woman and her body are depicted negatively. This article criticises the use of the woman and her body in the relationship between God and God’s people, and its impact on the husband-wife relationship.

Abstract

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes human trafficking in East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) based on the news/data exposed by two local newspapers, Pos Kupang and Flores Pos, during the past four years (2010-2013). Employing media analysis (content analysis), the exploration of various news items on human trafficking in the two newspapers shows a significant increase in the number of cases in the province. Victims are mostly poor, of different ages but mainly women and children. Many agents played an important role and have employed various modes for recruiting victims. The main root of human trafficking in NTT is the system which allows the agents/actors of recruitment of migrant workers (PJTKI) to operate illegally in the province; individuals are victims of this system of recruitment. This study recommends that there should be a significant change in the system of recruitment and control in the NTT province in particular, and in Indonesia in general, to prevent and overcome the problem of human trafficking along with other efforts to empower the local people economically, socially and culturally by enhancing their knowledge, skills and mentality so that they are able to defend their own rights when being victimized by recruiters, whether individual agents or recruiting companies. Kata-kata kunci: Perdagangan manusia, analisis isi, korban, cara merekrut, rekrutmen ilegal, agen ilegal, pekerja migran ilegal, sistem rekrutmen dan kontrol.

Abstract

Is social justice or economic justice a utopia? This would be one of the questions that anyone might immediately raise as he/she reads Friedrick August von Hayek’s position on the idea of social or economic justice. As a classic liberal thinker, Hayek believed that the free market is the ideal economic system for it in nature promotes freedom and equality in a free and open society. Is Hayek’s defence of the free martket economy sufficiently convincing to eliminate any room for social or economic justice to take place? There is actually no free market in a pure sense. The market is not totally free from selfish interests that might be developed by market players themselves in doing business. It is therefore not reasonable to see the market as a purely spontaneous and independent entity. And since it is in fact open to selfish interventions, its outcomes may be just or unjust. Free competition, prompted systematically by the free market system, therefore, could risk human life. For this reason, state intervention to a certain extent is necessary to prevent market competition from endangering citizens’ economic prospects. The state’s intervention is important, as it is necessary, to secure social or economic justice. Social or economic justice is of course an ideal but not necessarily a utopia in a radical sense. Taking the unfortunates’ quality of life as the benchmark in designing and enacting economic policies, social or economic justice might be, at least partially, realized. John Rawls’ idea of maximin rule or maximin strategy can pave the way for the realization of such an ideal that every civilized person or society is essentially craving for. Kata-kata Kunci: Kebebasan, pasar bebas, katalaksi, spontan, impersonal, hukum, keadilan sosial, ekonomi komando, regulasi, maximin rule.

Abstract

Half century after the anti-Communist Tragedy in Indonesia, including East Nusa Tenggara Province, one of the important questions need to be coped with is the impact of the Tragedy to the perpetrators. Some of those who took part in the arrest, persecution, and murder of the victims, are still alive. Because of the taboo of talking about the Tragedy and its impact among Indonesia society, they hide their feeling for nearly 50 years. They hold guilty/sin, shame, and hero feelings at the same time. Their narratives offer us rich theological themes and pastoral challenge. This paper tries to identify the theological themes arose in the narratives of some perpetrators.

Abstract

Corruption, understood as the misuse of entrusted power for private gain, has spread to every corner of Indonesia and become engrained in our daily lives. This is partly caused by the failure to think critically and the fear of judging representatively. It seems that members of our society have become thoughtless and are enslaved by human-made systems or rules. They blindly and uncritically follow the rules to the point where stealing money from those who really need it is considered perfectly normal. Here, corruption is an evil that is called banal. Therefore, following Arendt’s way of thinking, this article suggests the enhancement of critical thinking accompanied by an ability of judging representatively in the midst of the homogenization of the process of thinking as a way of reducing or even eradicating corruption.

Abstract

On the one hand, the First World War was the epitome of destruction, on the other hand the war spurred humanity to think deeply and be creative. An example of human creativity, a fruit of World War I, was Dialectic Theology, a theology that counter-balances and corrects Liberal Theology. It corrects the concept that identifies God with the human, such that instead of humanity talking about God, humanity deifies itself. Dialectic Theology invites theologians to return to the Sacred Scriptures to rediscover the true concept of the Divine. The God of Christians is the God who is absolutely “Other”, a concept impossible for human reason to grasp. God can only be experienced in faith. Nevertheless, Dialectic Theology is not without imperfections for its theological model excessively absolutizes God. This tendency results in Dialectic Theology falling into a similar fault as Liberal Theology. Liberal Theology falls into anthropomorphism, while Dialectic Theology falls into theocentrism. It also ignors other theological sources, namely tradition and context. Contextual theologies are a reaction to Dialectic Theology. Keywords: dialectic theology, liberal theology, otherness, justification, religion, war. Kata-kata kunci: teologi dialektis, teologi liberal, alteritas, pembenaran, agama, perang.

Abstract

Free-rider is one of the problems faced in many social movements. The problem is with those who benefit much from a social movement while never investing, or invest very little, into the movement; meanwhile those who invest and sacrifice much get almost nothing from it. This study is an attempt to explore whether or not there is a free rider phenomenon in the Reformation Movement in Indonesia. The findings of studies show that the Reformation Movement did not bring about significant change for most people in Indonesia except for the free riders: the politicians, top military officials, and big corporations (entrepreneurs) who were once part of the previous Suharto Regime. This study suggests that there should be change in the strategies and tactics of the movement to prevent a free rider problem and give more opportunities to people at the grassroots to benefit from the movement. Abstract

Identity, as what defines one’s self directly, touches on the question of human existence: how we identify ourselves and affirm our identity and group admist plural reality as with the nation of Indonesia. Indonesian citizens affirm their identity which is religious and at the same time national. As citizens, on the one hand, we give rational reasons when making political demands, and not simply emotional preferences. On the other hand these reasons have a public quality, that is need to be capable of convincing people of various beliefs and nations. For this to take place there needs to be a discernment process between what is a personal faith matter and those convictions that need to be defended in the public square. Abstract

For years HIV and AIDS were considered deadly viruses. Lacking appropriate knowledge about how these viruses develop made it more difficult to treat carriers, as they were once viewed as approaching death. Also, many thought that the virus was easily contagious (although it is not). Carriers were – and still are - marginalized and so could not maintain normal life in their communities. They were stigmatized more especially when the virus was viewed as the result of an un-controlled sex life. As “sinners” they had to pay for the sin they committed. This is pararell to the situation was faced by lepers at the time of Jesus. They were avoided, must not be touched; they were removed from the community. However, Jesus accepted lepers, touched them, and in accepting them broke through cultural and religious barriors. In Luke’s account (Luke 5:12-16) the leper does not seek a cure, but rather freedom from stigmatization (“made clean”). That is the “cure” that Jesus gave and what we can, and must, give today to HIV carriers. Kata-kata kunci: kusta, tahir, stigma, HIV, AIDS, Yesus, menjamah, mengulurkan, tangan, mentahirkan.
