Abstract

This essay examines citizenship struggles in the small Indonesian town of Maumere during two decades of intensive state formation after decolonization in 1945. These struggles culminated in the bloody anticommunist purges of late 1965 and early 1966, which in this area mainly reflected “ethnic” tensions. They should not be seen merely as evidence of a deeply divided society, of elite factional fights over resources, or of state institutions that were too weak to exert effective control over society (though all those observations have some truth as well). Rather they were contentious efforts to establish new forms of public authority in the broad space between state and society. Novel informal institutions and rituals developed in the interstices between state and society. Christian Lund has called them “twilight institutions”. They all aimed to include ordinary people in public affairs. They were clientelistic, and their rivalry sometimes produced violence. Yet they were essentially about bringing ordinary people into a productive relationship with the new state; that is, they were about citizenship. The greatest irony of the “twilight institutions” is that they only became instruments of total exclusion after the central state began to assert itself decisively also in small provincial towns such as this. The history of “twilight institutions” continues to impress itself on actually existing forms of citizenship in the provinces today.

Abstract

Corruption involves a self-interested misuse of power. Its effects are wide reaching, in particular on the quality of life of the poor. A corrupt country fails to prepare social assistance for the poor, and also results in the inability to create work opportunities for its citizens. Corruption is usually divided into three categories, namely that which involves an individual’s authority (deceiving, stealing), that which involves two persons acting together (gratification, extortion) and corruption as a system of patronage. This essay focuses on the third model, as the result of the practice of procedural democracy as experienced in Indonesia after the 1998 “Reformation”. In the final section the author suggests that we apply democracy as a popular control of public affairs and as a politics of the citizens’ equality of rights, as put forward by David Beetham, as a solution to the practice of corrupt patronage democacry.

Abstract

As a social movement, Credit Unions (CU) display the social, economic and cultural strength of little people. In line with contemporary developments and the advance of modern technology, the management of CUs needs to be monitored, evaluated and adapted to the social, economic and political situation that is continually changing. Nevertheless, in the midst of change the values of the CU are perennial and are very much needed in the movement. After looking at the founding and development, strengthens and weaknesses of the CU, this essay advances concrete steps for handling them. Abstract

Should we show our obedience more to the state or to the church? Of course, we must always be obedient to God, but this does not mean that such obedience makes us withdraw ourselves from being obedient to social-human institutions, such as a state. It should be noted that the state institution itself is actually a manifestation of our human social nature established by God. In their respective areas, the state and the church are two autonomous entities. However, as public institutions they are related to each other, thus to a certain extent they are not opposed to each other. In line with this view, the Indonesian government issued some regulations on religious teaching and the teaching of religions to be implemented by the community (church). In this case, the government has the obligation to support and assist educational institutions run by the church. It should be noted, however, that the government’s support and assistance should only be secondary in order not to replace, or even to cease, the educational institutions run by private sectors, such as the church Keywords: Negara, ketaatan, Gereja, ajaran religius, ajaran tentang agama, dan pemerintahan

Abstract

The author starts from the fact that often enough those who test positive for HIV, or who are suffering from AIDS, feel cursed by God, and question why God has punished them. They experience discrimination and are stigmatized by family and neighbours as sinners and punished by God. The author notes a similar way of thinking in the Bible. He then points to a corrective to this attitude and way of thinking as given in the Book of Job. He then takes up the thinking and actions of Jesus who approached people who were suffering discrimination and opposed the way of thinking that attributed suffering to a divine curse. Drawing from this biblicval corrective, the author outlines a number of conclusions for pastoral work in the Church at this time. Abstract

Recalling the Reformation movement of five hundred years ago provides us, the Churches throughout the world, with an opportunity to undertake a critical reflection on the meaning of the Reformation for us. In the Indonesian context, in particular relating to the relationship between Church and State, and the function of the Church in politics, we can learn from the legacy of John Calvin. This Reformation figure underlined the importance of separating the function of Church officials from that of State officials. Church pastors/ shepherds are responsible for taking care of the spiritual needs and the education of God’s people so that they can participate in politics as a faith responsibility. This is a duty that needs to be carried out with full commitment. Meanwhile the government and politicians work for the wellbeing of the people in the civic and governance spheres. Church and State have their own particular spheres of operation that should never be confused. Keywords: John Calvin, the reforms, ecclesiastical office, a Protestant church, politics, Indonesia ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Memperingati lima ratus tahun gerakan Reformasi memberikan kepada kita, Gereja-gereja di seluruh dunia, kesempatan untuk melakukan refleksi kritis atas makna Reformasi bagi kita. Abstract

Gaudium et Spes is a revolutionary document of Vatican II which can still inspire the Church now and in the future. This document is revolutionary in the sense that it deals with problems, issues and ideas that had never before become the agenda of any Council in the Catholic Church. Gaudium et Spes concretizes what John XXIII named aggiornamento, a process of contextualising the Christian heritage, through which the Church opens itself up to the modern world. This document is also revolutionary because it is entirely a product of the conciliar process of the Council itself. This article presents the process of drafting the document and discusses some issues that are relevant for the Church today and in the future. Abstract

Abstract: The problem of garbage is the issue of how human beings understand and bring alive the concept of himself or herself. Islam as a Gospel of Action has a certain perspective about human beings and the environment. Human beings, as written in some letters and hadith, are the most perfect part of God’s creation (kāmil) to whom two status are attributed, namely servant of God and Caliph. As servant of God and as Caliph, human beings are God’s chosen creation who are entrusted to take care of the universe. If so, then the problem of garbage which arises from the brutality of humans is a provocation attacking the status of human beings as the servant of God and Caliph. Keywords: Garbage, Islam, God, the servant of God, Caliph, human beings. Kata-kata kunci: sampah, Islam, Allah, abdi Allah, Khalifah, lingkungan hidup, manusia.

Abstract

If we wish to understand a totalitarian system as a whole, we need first to understand the central role of the concentration camp as a laboratorium to experiment in total domination. Arendt’s analysis of totalitarianism in the twentieth century shows how a totalitarian regime cannot survive without terror; and terror will not be effective without concentration camps. Experiments in concentration camps had as their purpose, apart from wiping out any freedom or spontaneity, the abolishing of space between human beings, abolishing space for politics. Thus, totalitarianism did not mirror only the politics of extinction, but also the extinction of politics. As a way forward, Arendt analyses political theory that forces the reader to understand power no longer under the rubric of domination or violence – although this avenue is open – but rather under the rubric of freedom. Arendt is convinced that the life of a destroyed nation can be restored by mutual forgiveness and mutual promises, two abilities rooted in action. Political action, as with other acts, is identical with the ability to commence something new.
