Abstract

Abstract This article will focus on describing Moltmann’s view of personal eschatology, which includes his view on death, the intermediate state, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal life. The main thesis of this article is that Moltmann’s view of personal eschatology is more relevant and applicable to the Christian life here and now. At the end of this article, the author will give two applications of Moltmann’s doctrine of personal eschatology. First, Moltmann’s view of personal eschatology motivates Christians, that they must live their lives in love, hope, and faith, for they already have been resurrected and given eternal life, here and now. Secondly, Moltmann’s focus on the new earth and new heaven in this world, more than life after death and the traditional concepts of heaven and hell, should make Christians care about this world and the life in it. Abstrak Artikel ini terfokus pada deskripsi pandangan Moltmann tentang eskatologi pribadi, yaitu mengenai kematian, keadaan peralihan, kebangkitan orang mati, dan kehidupan kekal. Tesis utama artikel ini ialah pandangan Moltmann tentang eskatologi pribadi yang lebih relevan dan berlaku untuk kehidupan Kristen di sini dan saat ini. Pada akhir artikel ini, penulis memberikan dua aplikasi dari doktrin Moltmann tentang eskatologi pribadi, yaitu: Pertama, pandangan Moltmann tentang eskatologi pribadi memotivasi orang Kristen supaya menjalani hidup mereka dalam cinta, harapan, dan iman, karena mereka sudah dibangkitkan dan diberikan jaminan kehidupan kekal. Kedua, pandangan Moltmann mengenai bumi dan surga baru di dunia ini yang lebih dari kehidupan setelah kematian dan konsep-konsep tradisional tentang surga dan neraka, membuat orang Kristen peduli terhadap dunia dan kehidupan di dalamnya. Abstract

Abstract Making use of the haecceitas theory of Duns Scotus, this text critiques the statement that every person, and in fact everything created, and especially people with disabilities, have an individual uniqueness. This is based upon the uniqueness of the Triune God who is relational. “Normal” people have self control, can decide and make personal choices. They can stand on their own two feet, and they are not dependent on others. The individuality or personality of a disabled person is often reduced because the disabled person is regarded as one who cannot do “normal” activities without assistance. All living creatures are relational beings because they have been created by and in God who is relational. The Church witnesses, in the Athanasian Creed, to the belief that the Triune God is Three separate Persons while being One in Essence. Seorang manusia yang ‘normal’ adalah orang yang menguasai diri, dapat memutuskan dan menentukan pilihan bagi diri, mandiri, dan tidak bergantung kepada orang lain. Individualitas ataupun kepribadian orang dengan disabilitas sering direduksi karena orang dengan disabilitas dianggap tidak dapat melakukan aktivitas secara ‘normal’ tanpa dibantu orang lain. Seluruh makhluk hidup adalah makhluk yang relasional karena diciptakan oleh dan dalam Allah yang relasional. Gereja menyaksikan iman, melalui Pengakuan Iman Athanasius, bahwa Allah Trinitas tidak bercampur dalam Tiga Pribadi (persona) dan tidak terpisah dalam Esensi-Nya (substantia). Abstract

Abstract This text describes the connection between the social sciences and contextual theology. The social sciences investigate the way people relate in society via various institutions and structures, which facilitate relationships in the economic, cultural and political spheres.The social sciences also investigate the way human beings relate to nature for two reasons, namely to defend themselves against the power of nature, and also to enable them to benefit from nature. Systematic theology studies the relationship between God and humanity in light of revelation and faith. Contextual theology investigates to what extent human institutions and structures, interpersonal relationships and the relationship between humanity and nature, become a help or a hindrance to expressing faith in the Lord, and to listening to what is said by God in God’s revelation to humankind. Abstrak: Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan hubungan antara ilmu-ilmu sosial dan teologi kontekstual. Ilmu-ilmu sosial juga meneliti hubungan manusia dengan alam dalam kaitannya dengan dua tujuan, yaitu mempertahankan diri terhadap kekuatan alam, dan memanfaatkan alam untuk keperluan hidupnya. Di sini teknologi dan ekonomi memainkan peranan yang menentukan. Teologi sistematik meneliti berbagai aspek relasi Tuhan dengan manusia melalui wahyu serta relasi manusia dengan Tuhan melalui iman. Teologi kontekstual meneliti sejauh mana institusi dan struktur yang dibangun manusia, baik dalam relasi antar-manusia maupun dalam relasi manusia dan alam, menjadi fasilitas atau hambatan baginya dalam menyatakan iman kepada Tuhan, dan dalam mendengarkan apa yang disampaikan Tuhan dalam wahyu-Nya kepada manusia. Abstract

Abstract This paper explains an Islamic eschatology according to Shia, and suggests that []Shia eschatology always has two dimensions – religion and politics – and the two dimensions are inseperable. Discussion surrounding Shia eschatology in this paper is particularly focused on the Mahdism concept and the figure of Mahdi. This paper is thus not intended to make a generalisation about ‘Islamic eschatology’ as if there were only one type of Islam with a single understanding of eschatology. Most Indonesian Muslims are of Sunni type of Islam, and may not share the viewpoint of Shia at all concerning eschatology. The key purpose of this paper is rather to explore one version of understanding of eschatology within Islam in order to provoke further reflection on other perspectives on eschatology. Pembahasan mengenai eskatologi Shia dalam tulisan ini khususnya berfokus pada konsep Mahdisme dan figur Mahdi, menurut versi Islam Shia. Maka tulisan ini tak dimaksudkan untuk membuat generalisasi mengenai ‘eskatologi Islam’ seolah ada hanya satu jenis Islam dengan pemahaman tunggal mengenai eskatologi. Kebanyakan kaum Muslim Indonesian adalah penganut Sunni, dan barangkali samasekali tak sependapat dengan pandangan Shia tentang eskatologi. Tujuan utama tulisan ini sebetulnya untuk menjelaskan satu versi pemahaman eskatologi dalam Islam agar memprovokasi refleksi lebih lanjut tentang perspektif-perspektif lain terkait eskatologi. Abstract

Abstract This text critiques the concept of eucharist-eschatology which is found in two works by local NTT artists. Using an eschatological approach and a study of the document Sacrosanctum Concilium regarding liturgy, two important messages have been identified in those works. First, solidarity is an effort to share. This virtue is primarily seen in the attitude of God who left His/Her grandeur and took on the form of a human being. Second, the act of giving as a form of solidarity comes from an awareness of the missionary aspect of the vocation of the faithful. Via the artistic works of two local artists, the faithful are helped to consider and idealise the eschatological eucharist. These two works show the clear connection between the celebration of the eucharist in the world and the eternal eucharist, the place where humanity meets God who is both intimate but also majestic. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan eskatologi dan studi dokumen Sacrosanctum Concilium tentang liturgi ditemukan dua pesan penting dari dua lukisan tersebut. Pertama, solidaritas sebagai usaha untuk saling berbagi. Kebajikan ini pertama-tama tampak dalam sikap Allah yang memutuskan untuk meninggalkan keagungan-Nya dan mengambil rupa manusia. Kedua, aktus memberi sebagai bentuk solidaritas terlahir dari kesadaran akan aspek misioner dari panggilan umat beriman. Melalui karya lukis dua seniman lokal ini, umat dibantu untuk membayangkan dan mencita-citakan ekaristi eskatologi. Dua lukisan ini memperlihatkan hubungan yang jelas antara perayaan ekaristi di dunia dan ekaristi kekal, tempat manusia menjumpai Allah yang akrab sekaligus yang agung. Abstract

Abstract: This article looks at the issues of discipleship and citizenship in the context of Asian Christianity in terms of “belonging”. The concept of discipleship refers to the concept of belonging within the church, while the concept of citizenship refers to belonging within the nation-state. Thus the issue of belonging within these two spheres is a sub-set of the questions relating to public theology within Asian Christianity. The first issue considered is the question as to what extent the assumptions of public Christian theology actually are the assumptions of post-Enlightenment western Christian theology alone, and therefore have only very indirect links with Asian Christianity. The second issue is the intercultural nature of Christian theology, and its implications for public theology, including discipleship and citizenship. The third issue is the reality of Asian society and Asian Christian theology, particularly public theology. Where Christianity is a minority (albeit, large minority), what is the contribution of a public Christian theology to the debates of civil society? In this section the author looks at the concrete reality of violence in Asia, and seek to analyse how the dynamics of Pauline theology frequently used in Asia engage with the fact of violence. Finally the article seeks to answer the question as to what we can learn from Asian Christian contexts on the interaction of faith and culture in relation to Christian discipleship and engaged citizenship. Devotion to Mary is one of the most popular religious practices among Catholics, and can be considered one of the oldest forms of popular religiosity. Marian devotions emerged spontaneously as a mixture of elements from local cultures and the Christian faith. However, such practices can become problematic when they overstress certain aspects of human experience together with the role of Mary. This article discusses a text of "The Way of the Cross" which was composed in a dialect of the Lamaholot language as used on the isle of Solor, East Flores. Abstract

In the face of the rapid expansion of prayer groups, the question arises as to the spiritual identity of this phenomenon. How far are they authentic or perhaps even heretical? This essay studied such a prayer group and aims to answer the question – authentic or heretical? - in the light of the official teaching of the Catholic Church concerning devotion and religious practices. Through such a study people should not be too quick to classify such groups as marginal or even un-Catholic, or conversely, too easily defend and justify their existence and practice. Prayer groups can offer “grace” but also potentially insert a “curse” into the life of their adherents. That is why church authority needs to be seriously concerned with such developments. If guided adequately, prayer groups can offer much to the development of the peoples’ faith. Conversely, if they are not correctly guided, prayer groups can potentially lead people up the wrong path. Abstract

There is increasing public attention about HIV/AIDS networks of concern. This option for and with HIV/AIDS survivors demonstrates human compassion but also expresses the struggle for life. And precisely here we find a unique, deep and challenging inspiration in the Bible. The story of the healing at the pool of Siloam/Bethzatha (John 5) is a cry for compassionate justice for those who suffer, including those surviving HIV/AIDS. This essay records a reading of John 5 by members of an HIV/AIDS survivor and mutual support group. They relate who Jesus is for them and how, in Jesus, they have regained their self respect and the will to live. Both their experience of pain and rejection by both the local church and their individual families, and their restored humanity accomplished by themselves through the healing touch of Jesus, challenges the rest of us to cast aside our ingrained prejudices and, together with these survivors, experience the liberating touch of Jesus in our lives too. The healing touch of Jesus can destroy any reluctance we might still have, based on the prejudiced values of the surrounding society. This “popular” reading of John 5 shows how Jesus opened up a circle of freedom and salvation and can be read alongside more academic exegetical accounts. Abstract

Sanguis Martyrum Semen Christianorum. The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. This well-known expression of Tertulian concerns the growth of the faith in times of great challenge. History notes that devotion to and worship of the Eucharist has long been present in the Western Catholic tradition, and in fact has grown whenever there has been harrassment and challenge. Adoration of the Sacrament is a form of devotion that can help one to experience the presence of God in one’s life and at the same time it can be an expression of deep love of Him who has errected his tent in the midst of his people. Thus, there is a close relationship between the Eucharist and devotion. Nevertheless, it must be remembered that eucharistic devotion must never replace the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist. In the order of ecclesial values, the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist has the first and highest place.
