Abstract

This article discusses the development paradigm that focuses on human  or people centered development. Many development paradigms have been applied in many developing countries, but the results have not been satisfactory. During this time the various paradigms emphasize economic growth, equity of development, and others, but the distortion of development appears everywhere. For example, development by emphasizes economic-growth was followed by massive environmental damage. In addition, poverty is still a portrait of people in developing countries, although the country is experiencing high economic growth. In realizing a prosperous society free of poverty, a new strategy or development paradigm that emphasizes its human factors are needed. In this case, this paradigm discusses the importance of the human element as the core of development itself. If human beings are capable, have sufficient knowledge, adequate skills by themselves poverty will be reduced. Therefore, this paradigm more implies that is a capacity building of human beings so that it can become the subject of development and not just as an object of development themselves. Capacity building can be achieved through social development that emphasizes elements of education, knowledge, and skills so that they can try or do entrepreneurship and open their own job opportunities. Many cases, various development paradigms that emphasize economic growth are not able to absorb the available labor so that many are unemployed. With the ability of human or people, they have will be able to open their own business and do not depend on the provision of employment from the government. In the end they are able to alleviate self-poverty.

Abstract

This article designed to examine patronage practice in the 2014 general election in Ogan Ilir district, South Sumatera Province, Indonesia, before and after election in one electoral area (Ogan Ilir 1). We apply Nine Step to Victory (Alamsyah, 2015) framework to achieve this goal. Our key informants are some legislative candidates and their brokerage or winning team at various level. Primary data gathered through depth interview and secondary data collected from the government institution. This data will be analyzed using interactive model (Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, 1994). Drawing on the qualitative approach, we find that, before election day, all candidates in this area practicing vote buying and patronage to get political support from the voters. A form of patronage dominated by club goods, and cash transfer (transport allowance, communication and consumption cost, and vote buying). We do not find incumbency candidate who is practicing fork barrel. After election day, especially when the winner candidates, has been working as a legislator, he has an obligation to continuing patronage through informal and cultural networking (personal or community event). In this various event, he must deliver goods, services, or money to the people (as an individual or group). Our results are strengthening the previous finding that all candidates have begun implementing patronage strategy when they are recruiting the winning team, campaign, and realize vote buying. Family, especially extended family, and friendship is the primary foundation for all candidates to build brokerage (the winning team) structure. All candidates also using “by name by address” strategy to guide vote-buying practice. We discuss this finding, showing limitation and agenda for the research on this topic.

Abstract

The Rustamid Dynasty (160-296 AH / 776-909 AD) was a remarkable Ibadite dynasty. Unfortunately, most of the historical works have paid little attention to the development of Islamic civilization during the Rustamid reign. This fact is very contrary to the study of Sunnite or Shi’ite dynasties. This paper shows that the Rustamids performed their moderate policy by giving great tolerance, freedom, and equality to all citizens who lived in their territory, especially in Tahert (part of Algeria) and Jabal Nafusah (part of Libya). Consequently, this moderate policy, which was encouraged by the moderate Ibadite doctrine, had influence on the establishment of Islamic civilization in the Maghrib. The Rustamids successively played a significant role in economic prosperity, intellectual development, and Islamization. Like the Rustamids, the plural society of Indonesia can obtain the achievements of civilization by maintaining their multicultural diversity. Hence, the Indonesian government, the Muslim organizations, and all of the Muslim people should promote tolerant Islamic teachings and support intellectual movement.

Abstract

The cotruction of society that Gandhi is trying to build is a manifestation of his religious or religious faith. Where each individual jointly runs his life activity in the life of society as a holy dharma of religion. As dharma then every individual must be able to defeat any potential greed in developing autonomization of individuality to realize mutual interests. The idealization of society that Gandhi aspires to is inseparable from the idealization of the perfection of human beings as the main core of society. The idealization of society for Gandhi is what the Indian community calls the ashram. Ashram has in common with ashrama terminology. Ashram is the ideal conception of community building as a model community. Such community prototypes contain a set of cultural roots that make up the ideological constructions of society. The cultural roots are established as living principles that must be obeyed by the ashram citizens. The estuary of all is the enforcement of the principle of brotherhood of mankind. The value of humanity that is the culmination and the key word for every form of devotion by upholding that all human beings are equal and brothers, should not be exaggerated or feel more than others. This principle of all brothers is the moral principle in Gandhi idealized society. The implications of Gandhis thought increasingly find a point of relevance to forming civil society in Indonesia.
