ELITE: English and Literature Journal (Print ISSN: 2355-0821, Online ISSN: 2580-5215) is a peer-reviewed journal devoted specifically to the studies of English linguistics and literature and other literatures with a special emphasis on local culture, wisdom, philosophy and identity. Published twice a year in June and December, the first edition of ELITE was published in 2013. The journal contents are managed by the English and Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar, Indonesia. The primary objective of the journal is to provide a productive forum for lecturers, researchers, authors, graduate students, and practitioners to present results of their recent studies in the areas of English linguistics and literature and other literary traditions. The journal is also intended to help disseminate recent developments in theories, concepts, and ideas in the areas concerned to the academic community of language and literature studies in Indonesia in particular and worldwide in general.

Abstract

AbstractLocal culture content approach in education has long been discussed and there are still some arguments on its position in education. Regardless its issues, as a teacher I believed that local culture has significant position in education. Therefore, in my teaching, I always attach culture value in it as a shape of my awareness toward it. This study based on a personal experience in teaching writing for beginner students at English department of Muhammadiyah University of Parepare. The study explores the interference of local culture knowledge in affecting students’ idea forming in class of writing. The participant of the study was the 2nd semester students; class A and B in 2012/2013. The study design applied was case study. It revealed in the study that the use of local culture based material in writing can ease students in mapping their writing ideas as well as reinforcing their awareness toward their local culture. Students enjoyed writing as the material given is familiar to them while at the same time they can strengthen their local culture awareness. Also reinforcing local culture knowledge in teaching English can help widen student’s knowledge on writing.AbstrakPenguatan Budaya Lokal dalam Pengajaran Writing; Suatu Studi Kasus di Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare. Pendekatan konten budaya lokal dalam pendidikan lama telah dibahas dan masih ada beberapa argumen pada posisi dalam pendidikan. Terlepas dari isu-isu yang, sebagai guru, saya percaya bahwa budaya lokal memiliki posisi penting di bidang pendidikan. Oleh karena itu, dalam mengajar saya, saya selalu melampirkan nilai budaya di dalamnya sebagai bentuk kesadaran saya ke arah itu. Studi ini didasarkan pada pengalaman pribadi dalam mengajar menulis untuk pemula siswa di Departemen bahasa Inggris dari Universitas Muhammadiyah kota Pare. Studi mengeksplorasi gangguan pengetahuan budaya lokal dalam mempengaruhi siswa ide membentuk di kelas menulis. Peserta studi adalah mahasiswa semester 2; kelas A dan B di 2012/2013. Desain studi yang diterapkan pada studi kasus. Itu mengungkapkan dalam studi bahwa penggunaan bahan budaya lokal dalam menulis dapat memudahkan siswa dalam pemetaan ide-ide menulis mereka serta memperkuat kesadaran mereka terhadap budaya lokal mereka. Siswa menikmati menulis sebagai materi yang diberikan akrab bagi mereka sementara pada saat yang sama mereka dapat memperkuat kesadaran budaya lokal mereka. Juga memperkuat pengetahuan budaya lokal dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris dapat membantu memperluas pengetahuan siswa menulis.

Abstract

AbstractAnxiety indeed an ordinary thing experienced by everyone when talking in public and can be increased if it is done by using a foreign language. This paper aims to provide a specific description of the students’ anxiety in delivering English presentations as well as provide a solution on how to deal with the anxiety. There are several factors that affect student anxiety, namely internal factors which covers fear of failure, fear of criticism, conflicting emotion, speech anxiety, negative experience, fear of losing the thread of material, fear of being stopped, and negative thinking; and external factors which covers condition of presentation room, failing to practice, gender, and physical factor. Strategies that can be applied by participants to cope their anxiety in delivering English presentation are: (a) to keep thinking positively toward the audience, the speech, and their self as a speaker, to made good preparation, to rehearse, to keep self-confidence, and to do relaxation.AbstrakKecemasan merupakan hal yang lumrah dialami oleh setiap orang pada saat berbicara di depan publik. Kecemasan itu sendiri dapat bertambah jika dilakukan dengan menggunakan bahasa asing.Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran khusus mengenai kecemasan siswa dalam membawakan presentasi berbahasa Inggris serta memberikan solusi cara untuk menghadapi kecemasan tersebut. Terdapat beberapa faktor yang mempengaruhi kecemasan siswa yaitu faktor internal yang meliputi takut salah, takut kritikan, konflik emosi, kecemasan berbahasa, pengalaman negatif, takut lupa materi presentasi, takut distop, dan pikiran negatif, dan faktor eksternal yang meliputi kondisi ruangan, gagal berlatih, gender, dan faktor fisik. Adapun strategi yang dapat dilakukan oleh siswa untuk mengatasi kecemasan mereka pada presentasi berbahasa Inggris yaitu, (a) berpikir positif, (b) membuat persiapan yang optimal, (c) berlatih berulang-ulang (d) percaya diri, dan (e) melakukan relaksasi.

Abstract

Abstract In EFL learning, among all the skills: listening, reading, and writing, speaking seems to be one of the most important skills. However, to master speaking is not an easy thing. And as a matter of fact, there are still many learners who have learned English for some years have not been able to speak fluently. Brown (2007) states that the difficulties the learners find in speaking are due to the fact that they have to focus on forms and function of the language. Further, Ellis (1994) also states that speaking has two sequential phases: planning and execution. Planning is done when speakers think of what utterance to produce to impact the listeners and execution is the realization of planning into words, phrases and sentences. To cope with the difficulties in speaking and to speak fluently, learners need to understand well about Communication Strategies. Thus, this paper tries to share ideas on the importance of the use of Communication Strategies to improve EFL learners’ speaking skill.  It includes the nature of speaking, learners’ proficiency, communicative competence, communication strategies, and the research supports on Communication strategies. Strategi Komunikasi dalam Bercakap pada Pembelajar Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing. Dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing, diantara semua keterampilan menyimak, membaca, menulis, dan bercakap; kemampuan bercakap merupakan salah satu kemampuan yang terpenting. Namun demikian, bukan hal yang mudah untuk menguasai kemampuan ini. Beberapa fakta memperlihatkan bahwa banyak pembelajar bahasa Inggris yang telah belajar selama beberapa tahun namun belum dapat bercakap lancar. Brown (2007) menyatakan bahwa kesulitan yang ditemukan oleh pembelajar dalam bercakap adalah dimana mereka harus fokus pada bentuk dan fungsi bahasa. Lebih lanjut, Ellis (1994) juga mengemukakan bahwa terdapat dua langkah berkelanjutan dalam bercakap, yaitu perencanaan dan eksekusi. Perencanaan dilakukan saat pembicara berpikir ujaran apa yang harus diucapkan untuk memberikan dampak pada pendengar, dan eksekusi adalah realisasi perencanaan dalam kata-kata, frase dan kalimat. Untuk mengatasi kesulitan dalam bercakap lancar, pembelajar harus memahami tentang strategi komunikasi. Olehkarenanya, tulisan ini mencoba untuk berbagi ide tentang pentingnya penggunaan Strategi Komunikasi untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara pembelajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Strategi ini termasuk sifat berbicara, kemampuan peserta didik, kompetensi komunikatif, strategi komunikasi.

Abstract

AbstractThis article is based on a phenomenon that gender ideology practiced by a society may be reflected on the production of literary work. Thus, even though a novel known as an imaginative work,its content and its gender ideology cannot be detached from social reality. This writing aims to describe (1) role and gender identity (2) women struggle and her relationshipwith other characters, (3) types of gender ideology, (4) Gender inequality, and (5) the relationship gender issues and Indonesia novel produced during reformation era. Gramsci’s theory on hegemony and gender perspective helps describing those five problems presented in this article. The object formal of this research is gender ideology presented in six novels written by Indonesian authors during reformation era. Meanwhile, the material object of the research consists of six novels produced in Indonesia during the reformation era and written by Indonesian. The research found that the six novels represent patriarchal ideology, familiasme ideology, ibuism ideology, and general gender ideology. The four gender ideologies createdomestication of the position and the role of women. The existence and the organization of the gender ideology are supported by masculine hegemony in Indonesian culture. Therefore according to Gramsci, new hegemony should be constructed opposed to those capitalist one. The creation of new hegemony must be constructed on the basis of alteration of consciousness, thnking patterns, perception of world conception, as well as their moral norm. This can be done through education. Besides that, the six authors can be termed as intellectual organics who offers new ideology to deconstruct old hegemonic ideology.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this research is to find out the students’ motivation in reading English material by using fairy tales. In this study, the researcher applied the descriptive method. The population of the research was the eighth year students of SMP Negeri 3 Polewali academic year 2012/2013 which consisted of 4 classes with 124 students. Because the number of students was large enough in number, the writer used random sampling method. The researcher took only 20 students as respondents. The instrument used to gather the data was questionnaire. The data from questionnaires were analyzed by frequency and percentage technique. The result of the data analysis shows that the Eighth year students of SMP Negeri 3 Pelewali have high motivation in reading English material by using Fairy Tales. It can be seen by the data obtained from the questionnaire in table 1 up 19 where shows that the average percentage of students who chosen very interesting is 43% and the students who chosen interesting is 48%. So, the total is 91%. It means that the students who chosen very interesting and interesting greater than 50%. From the data collected above, it can be concluded that the using fairy tales can motivate students in reading English material.AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan motivasi mahasiswa dalam membaca materi bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan dongeng. Pada penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII di SMP Negeri 3 Polewali tahun ajaran 2012/2013 yang terdiri dari 3 kelas dengan jumlah siswa sebanyak 124. Jumlah siswa yang banyak maka peneliti menggunakan metode random sampling. Peneliti hanya mengambil sebanyak 20 siswa sebagai responden. Hal tersebut dilihat dari data perolehan angket mulai tebel 1 sampai table 19 yang memperlihatkan tingkat rata-rata siswa dengan pilihan sangat tertarik sebanyak 43 persen dan tertarik sebanyak 48 persen. Jadi totalnya sebesar 91 persen. Artinya, siswa yang memilih jawaban sangat tertarik dan tertarik lebih dari 50 persen. Berdasarkan data yang telah dikumpulkan tersebut, maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa dengan menggunakan dongeng dapat memotivasi siswa dalam membaca materi bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

AbstractThe objective of this writing is to give a sight on the use of speech act in a formal spoken discourse by the participants of research seminar as well as to discover the types of speech acts used by participants of the research seminar.The writer applied descriptive research design. The population of the research was the members of research seminar consist of examiners and presenter of English Department, Graduate Program UNM, by total sample was 3 people taken through purpossive random sampling. The data were acquired by the used of video recorder and were analyzed based on the theory of Austin and Searle. The results showed that types of speech acts mostly used by the speaker in the research seminar arequestioning and answering. Abstract

AbstractLearning autonomy is one of the important factors that can help the learners to meet the learning goal. However, some learners are not enthusiastic to learn autonomously, they always need a teacher to help them. They sometimes just learn when the teacher asked them to do during the learning process, when they find some difficulties; they just give up and feel less confidence to solve it. This negative aptitude is caused by the students’ mindset in language learning. According to Carol Dweeck, fixed mindset students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed trait while growth mindset students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. It indicates that, the fixed mindset learners seemingly have a problem with their mindset which leads them to be less motivated in language learning.  AbstrakHubungan antara Pola Pikir Pembelajar dan Pembelajaran Bahasa secara Autonomi (LLH). Belajar otonomi adalah salah satu faktor penting yang dapat membantu para peserta didik untuk memenuhi tujuan pembelajaran. Namun, beberapa peserta didik tidak bersemangat untuk belajar secara otonom, mereka selalu membutuhkan guru untuk membantu mereka. Mereka kadang-kadang hanya belajar ketika guru meminta mereka untuk melakukan selama proses pembelajaran, ketika mereka menemukan beberapa kesulitan; mereka hanya menyerah dan merasa kurang percaya diri untuk menyelesaikannya. Bakat negatif ini disebabkan oleh pola pikir siswa dalam belajar bahasa. Menurut Carol Dweeck, tetap pola pikir siswa percaya kemampuan dasar, kecerdasan mereka, bakat mereka, hanya tetap sifat sementara pertumbuhan pola pikir siswa memahami bahwa bakat dan kemampuan dapat dikembangkan melalui usaha, pengajaran yang baik dan ketekunan. Ini menunjukkan bahwa, peserta didik pola pikir tetap tampaknya memiliki masalah dengan pola-pikir mereka yang membawa mereka menjadi kurang termotivasi dalam belajar bahasa.

Abstract

AbstractThis research analyzed the perception of Makassar’s teenagers toward Korean drama and music and their influences to them. Interviews and digital recorder were provided as instruments of the research to ten respondents who are members of Makassar Korean Lover Community. Then, in analyzing data the researchers used descriptive qualitative method that aimed to get deep information about Korean wave in Makassar. The Results of the study found that Makassar’s teenagers put enormous interest in Korean culture especially Korean drama and music. However, most respondents also realize that the presence of Korean culture has a great negative impact to them and their environments. Korean culture itself gives effect in several aspects such as the influence on behavior, Influence on the taste and Influence on the environment as well. AbstrakPersepsi Remaja Makassar terhadap Drama dan Musik Korea (Studi Kasus pada Komunitas Pecinta Korea di Makassar). Penelitian ini mengkaji persepsi remaja di kota Makassar terhadap drama dan musik Korea serta pengaruhnya terhadap remaja tersebut. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah interview melalui alat perekam kepada (10) sepuluh responden yang tergabung dalam Komunitas Pencinta Korea kota Makassar. Dalam penelitian ini, digunakan metode deskrptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk memperoleh informasi lengkap tentang pengaruh budaya Korea di kota Makassar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa remaja di Kota Makassar menaruh perhatian yang sangat besar terhadap budaya Korea khususnya drama dan musik Korea. Tetapi, hampir semua responden berpendapat bahwa kehadiran budaya Korea membawa dampak negatif terhadap mereka dan lingkungannya. Budaya Korea juga berpengaruh besar terhadap kebiasaan/tingkah laku remaja, kecenderungan menyukai dan menggunakan produk-produk Korea dan berpengaruh terhadap lingkungan remaja Makassar.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aims to find out kinds of learning strategies dominantly used by the students of English and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar under cumlaude (3.76-4.00) GPA. This research is important to know, especially for the students in foreign language major, because learning strategies has function as the way to improve language achievement and students ability in applying foreign language. The researcher uses a descriptive method in analyzing the data. The researcher states the result of data analysis by describing them through percentage and explanation. The researcher uses questionnaire as the instrument to collect the data. Referring to the finding and discussion of this research, the result shows that from three kinds of learning strategies: 1. Metacognitive learning strategies, 2. Cognitive learning strategies, 3. Socioaffective learning strategies proposed by O’Malley et al, the highest learning strategies used by the students of English and Literature Department of Adab and Humanities Faculty of UIN Alauddin Makassar who have cumlaude (3.76-4.00) GPA is socioaffective learning strategies, the second is cognitive learning strategies, and the last is metacognitive learning strategies. So, the writer concludes that learning strategies that dominantly used by students of English and Literature Department of Adab and Humanities Faculty of UIN Alauddin Makassar who have cumlaude (3.76-4.00) GPA is socioaffective learning strategies.

Abstract

AbstractThis jurnal studied about racial injustice in 12 Years a Slave movie. This research is to find out the kinds and impacts of racial injustice in 12 Years a Slave movie. This research used descriptive qualitative and used theories of Paradies et al. and Liliweri to analysis the kinds of racial injustice and used theory of Utsey et al. to analysis the impacts of racial injustice. The data collections of this research are script and film 12 Years a Slave movie, which is released in 2013. In collecting data, the writer used note taking as the instrument to find out the kinds and impacts of racial injustice in these movies. In this research, the writer found out that there are twenty-eight data of kinds racial injustice which is divided into five, they were; prejudice, stereotype, discrimination, violence, segregation and seven data of impacts of racial injustice, which is divided into three, they were; racism-related trauma, racism-related stress and distress, anticipatory racism reaction. In addition, the writer found that only violence kinds of racial injustice that had impact in these movie. Based on the findings and discussions, the writer concluded that racial injustice is the action of White people that threaten physical/mentally and unfair action that disadvantages to Black people.AbstrakRasisme dalam Film 12 Tahun menjadi budak. Jurnal ini belajar tentang ketidakadilan rasial dalam film 12 tahun menjadi budak budak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu jenis dan dampak dari ketidakadilan rasial film 12 tahun menjadi budak budak. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan teori Paradies et al. dan Liliweri untuk menganalisa jenis-jenis ketidakadilan rasial dan digunakan teori dari Utsey et al. analisis dampak ketidakadilan rasial. Dalam pengumpulan data berdasarkan pada manuskrip film 12 tahun menjadi budak budak, yang dirilis pada tahun 2013. Dalam pengumpulan data, penulis peneliti menggunakan note taking sebagai instrument. Hasilnya, peneliti menemukan bahwa terdapat 28 jenis ketidakadilan rasial yang dibagi ke dalam lima kategori yakni; prasangka, stereotip, diskriminasi, kekerasan, pemisahan. Sedangkan dampak ketidakadilan rasial, terbagi ke dalam tiga kategori, keduanya; rasisme yang berhubungan dengan trauma, rasisme yang berhubungan dengan stres dan tekanan, serta rasisme antisipatif reaksi. Olehnya itu, penulis menemukan bahwa kekerasan ketidakadilan rasial terdapat dalam film ini. Dari hasil temuan, penulis menyimpulkan bahwa ketidakadilan rasial adalah tindakan yang dilakukan oleh orang kulit putih yang mengancam fisik/mental dan tindakan yang tidak adil dengan menindas orang kulit hitam.
