Abstract

This research aimed to examine the effect of baker’s yeast as immunostimulant on growth of nile tilapia and to find out a proper dose of baker’s yeast that promoted optimal growth of fish. Juveniles with an average weight of 31.83 g were obtained from stock available at Aquaculture Study Program of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences.  This research was conducted at the experimental ponds located at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences for three months. During the experiment, fish was fed with pellet supplemented with baker’s yeast as treatment for four weeks as much as 4%/bw/day, twice daily.  The doses of baker’s yeast consisted of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 g/kg pellet. Fish growth including absolute and relative growth was measured at two weeks interval.  Research results showed that  after two weeks of feeding, supplementation of baker’s yeast did not affect the growth of fish but after four weeks of feeding, supplementation of baker’s yeast significantly increased fish growth. Fish fed pellet supplemented with 10 g baker’s yeast displayed the highest growth. As conclusion, supplementation of baker’s yeast in fish food could enchance the growth of fish.   Keywords:  Oreochromis niloticus, immunostimulant, baker’s yeast, growth

Abstract

An underwater visual census (UVC) conducted to assess the biophysical conditions of the two marine protected areas (Antulang Marine Protected Area and Andulay Marine Protected Area) in Siaton, Negros Oriental revealed slow recovery from severe damage resulting from Typhoon Sendong in December 2011, suggestive of “coral-algal phase-shift”. Live hard coral (LHC) cover was consistently poor in the survey sites (2.25±0.78 % in Antulang Marine Protected Area; 1.25±0.50 % in the Control Site; and 3.33±0.17 % in Andulay Marine Protected Area) following destruction by the typhoon and colonization of algae (between 37-53%), dominated by Bornetella oligospora. Mean total fish biomass (including fusiliers and schooling juvenile Caranx sexfasciatus) was highest in Antulang Marine Protected Area at 70.60±28.07 kg/500m2 (equivalent to 141.21±56.14 tonne/km2) while lowest in Andulay Marine Protected Area at 9.83±4.32 kg/500m2. Mean total fish density was highest in Antulang Marine Protected Area at 597.0±114.7 fish/500m2 followed by the Control Site with 361.7±159.0 fish/500 m2, while Andulay Marine Protected Area had 200.7±31.6 fish/500m2. Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of feed supplemented with baker’s yeast on survival rate of nile tilapia larvae and to determine the effective dose of baker’s yeast that could optimally improve larval quality.  The research was conducted at Pathology and Clinic of Fish Disease from June – September 2014.  Fish as brood stock candidates was cultivated at five concrete tanks (2x1x1 m3) at a density of 30 fish per tank.  Each tank was equipped with water inlet, outlet and water pump for recirculating and aerating.  After seven days of adaptation, fish was fed pellet supplemented with baker’s yeast at five different doses (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 g/kg food) for four consecutive weeks at 4%/bb/day, twice daily.  Larva was captured with seser and moved into five glass aquaria with density of 20 larvae/aquarium and reared for two weeks.  Data collected was survival rate of larvae achieved until the end of larval rearing.  Research result showed that larvae produced by brood stock fed food supplemented with 10 g baker’s yeast per kg food had the highest survival rate namely 60%.  As conclusion, supplementation of baker’s yeast into brood stock feed might increase survival rate of larvae.   Keywords:  nile tilapia, baker’s yeast, larvae, survival rate

Abstract

This research aimed to diagnose bacterial diseases on nile tilapia cultured in stick net cage in Lake Tondano. Fish samples were taken from three locations of net cages in Lake Tondano namely Paleloan, Eris and Remboken villages. Three samples of fish were taken from each location/village. The samples taken showed clinical symptoms of bacterial infection such as hemorrhagic on the abdomen, the base of the fin, anal and chest, irregular swimming fish, hemorrhagic on the gills, fish refuse food, remain silent on the outskirts of net cage. Bacteria were isolated by using a sterile loop from head kidney (anterior kidney), which is located on the front, below the spine near the head. Bacterial cultures were performed on TSA media by making a zigzag scratches. The petri dish containing bacterial isolates were subsequently incubated in an incubator at a temperature of 35oC for 24 hours. The water quality parameter data measured consisted of temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, pH, ammonia, brightness. The results of the study showed that farmed tilapia in Lake Tondano has been infected with Aeromonas hydrophila that causes MAS (Motile Aeromonad Septicemia). Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the  applied technology and the production value of the aquaculture activities in the waters of  Lake Tondano and to identify factors influencing aquaculture production in Tondano lake. Data collected  consisted of primary and  sekunder data.  Primary data  were collected by conducting a survey to fish-farmers as respondents around the lake Tondano.  Operational aquaculture data were obtained  by interviewing the fish farmers and by observation.  Secondary data were collected from various  institution  such as Minahasa  Fisheries  Office  ,  Office of  Village Head and Fish-farmer  Group  Administrative Centre.  Collected data were  descriptively analyzed  and presented in the form of tabulation and various model of diagram.  Fluctuated data in aquacultural production value  and the number of  operated  KJT  during the periood of  2001 to  2014 was analysed by using linear regression  and correlation. The aquacultral production value  of the lake Tondano in  2014 was  estimated only 1227,3 tons /year.  The number of operated  KJT  only remained 1203 units.  The production value decreased consistently  from 2003 to 2014.   Statistical analysis showed that during  2001-2014 there was a reduction about 1.236 ton every year in aquacultural production, and  607 units of operated KJT.  There was a  very strong correlation  between  time  (year) and the  the aquacultural production, and also between  time (year) and  the number  of  operated KJT.  There were 3 important  factors  influencing the aquacultural production value of lake Tondano, which were: environmental, technical and economic factor.   However, the primary factor  was  ‘economic’ factor.  The  ‘very high price’ of the fish formulated diet  and  the "very low price”  of  the produced fish were the main causes of the problem.   The fish farmers could not afford the invesment and operational cost.   Environmental degradation of  Lake Tondano waters  also significantly  influenced the operation of aquacultural activities.   Keywords:  Production, technology, aquaculture, Lake Tondano

Abstract

Field practice activities conducted in laboratory incluiding the process of carcass removal from its shells was done in the Laboratory of Nutrition and Fish Feed Technology, and also analysis of Kijing Taiwan carcass chemical composition was done in the Research and Industrial Standardization Institute of Manado. The purpose of field practice are: Analyzing the Proximate composition, Vitamin C, Calcium, and Energy of Kijing Taiwan carcass taiwan in wet and dry form. Providing scientific information about the nutrient content of Kijing Taiwan in wet and dry form. Acquire skills in operating the Proximate instruments of Vitamin C, Calcium, and Energy in the laboratory. Based on the results of the Kijing Taiwan (Anodonta woodiana) carcass proximate analysis  in wet form, the data showed, 11.59% of protein, 80.66% of water, 0.26% of fat, 3.06% of ash, 0.23% of crude fiber, 4.20% of carbohydrate, 65.5 kcal of energy, 0.59% of calcium, 3.86 mg/100 g of Vitamin C. While the dry form of the data showed, 54.84% of protein, 12.18% of water, 4.08% of fat, 14.92% of ash, 0.53% of crude fiber, 13.45% of carbohydrates, 309.88 kcal of energy, 0.55% of calcium, 14.88% of vitamin C mg/100 g. Abstract

Zooplankton variation in fresh water fish pond on North Minahasa District of North Sulawesi Province was done in five different areas.  The goal is to evaluate the variation and the abundance of zooplankton.  The result is copepod is the first rank in abundance (50% on April and 51% on August), followed by cladoceran (32% on April and 33% on August) and finally, rotifer (18% on April and 16% on August). Abstract

The important thing in cultivation of freshwater crayfish is the availability and quality of seed. The use of appropriate method could support the production of good seed, therefore in this research we conduct the seed production methods, one is hatching in a natural way, while the other is separating the eggs from the female. On this research, we used 5 females and 3 males of freshwater crayfish (LAT) and placed them in a round glass fiber container with a diameter of 1.5 together with aeration and small pipe (as shelter).  Initial average weight of the female and male, respectively from 74.5 to 76.7 grams and an average length of 6 cm. These female and male freshwater crayfish were acclimatized before spawning. Gonadal maturation performed together in a single glass fiber container for 2 months.  In this study routinely measured water quality parameters including temperature, acidity (pH) using cremometer, also dissolved oxygen and CO2. Egg test used for this study was given as treatment A which is 150 eggs incubated by each female and treatment B which is 150 eggs separate from each parent and left to hatch by itself.  Females that incubate their eggs and the separating eggs were placed in different aquarium (60 x 40 x 40 cm) equipped with modified pipes for shelter. The results of water quality parameter are temperature 24.5-26.5 oC, pH 7, DO 6.43 ppm and CO2 0.04 ppm. Egg incubation period lasts for 45 days.  From this research the following conclusions can be drawn between the two treatments were performed in the study, natural incubation method gives much better results for egg hatching of freshwater crayfish.   Keywords: egg incubation method, freshwater crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus, reproduction

Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the suitability of several environment factors and water quality parameters for development of seaweed culture in Kampung Sakabu.  The research was conducted through observation at three stations while protection factor and bottom substrate of waters were observed visually. Water quality parameters including pH, salinity, current rate, temperature were measured in situ and the compared to Standard Water Quality Citeria by Bakosurtanal 1996.  Research results were divided into three suitability categories namely 1) very suitable, 2) suitable, and 3) less suitable.  In general, environmental condition and water quatily in Kampung Sakabu were categorized as suitable to very suitable. Abstract

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the present feasibility of seaweed cultivation area at the waters of Arakan village. Research method used was observation. Observation  station consisted of 1) near residential area, 2) at seaweed culture area, 3) around mangrove ecosystem.  Data collected included area sheltering, bottom substrate, pH, salinity, flow rate, water depth.  Measurement of water quality was conducted in the morning and afternoon. Data was analyzed descriptively and then compared with the water quality tables eligibility for seaweed cultivation by Bakosurtanal 1996. Research results illustrated that cultivation areas at all station were feasible, water quality at station 1 was very feasible and station 3 was less feasible. pH and salinity at all station were very feasible, flow rates at station 1 and 3 were less feasible while at station 2 was very feasible, water depth was very feasible, and water temperature was categorized as feasible to very feasible.  It was concluded that  the present condition of the waters at Arakan Village is still suitable for seaweed aquaculture.   Keywords: Desa Arakan, seaweeds, water quality, area feasibility
